I think this story was always there, in some form, in the original script (it used to be 9 episodes from the beginning (even 12 actually). In ROTJ, Luke force chokes 2 gamorrean guards. Not really the jedi way. And even Han thinks he has delusions of grandeur. Safe to say, Luke is on the same path as Anakin. And do NOT forget the most important reason for a Jedi to turn dark... He is wearing black!RvDnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4104469133277555786.post-75487791020875318022014-05-10T17:54:50.346+01:002014-05-10T17:54:50.346+01:00One may indeed ask: what was the narrative "p...One may indeed ask: what was the narrative "point" of making Leia Luke's sister in the last of the original movies? Simply to have a "shocker" like the Daddy Vader revelation in the previous movie? It is not handled very "shockingly" at all -- Obi-Wan says Luke has a sister and Luke almost instantly concludes it must be Leia (the MAD parody had him pointing out that she is after all the only girl in the movie, so it pretty much has to be her).

The blandness of the "revelation" is indeed a good argument for the Machete Order of watching the six movies, if you really are a complete Star Wars virgin. You see episode IV and V first, then watch the prequels as a long flashback, and end the marathon with Episode VI. I have read a report from a guy who watched the series like this with his girlfriend; she screamed in awestruck surprise when Padme gives birth to a second baby and names that child ... "Leia"!

In that way, the blandness of the "revelation" in Return of the Jedi doesn't matter so much; we are just watching Luke catching up with us, the audience.

But looking at the Original Trilogy in isolation, the "Leia = Luke's sister" revelation has no other function than to definitely resolve the Han-Luke-Leia love triangle .. which was never really developed anyway. Already in Ep V it is my clear impression that Luke is no longer pursuing any relationship with Leia, instead calmly respecting how she and Han are gravitating towards one another (screaming and kicking and resisting, but still). When Leia kisses LUKE (not the other way around) it is plainly only to annoy Han.

If they did want to go with the "sister" revelation in Ep VI, more should have been made of it, which would have given Leia a more satisfying arc overall. Two lost opportunities: 1) There should have been a moment down on Endor when all seemed completely lost, but Leia remembers what Luke told her and saves the day by unlocking her ability to use the Force. Just some tiny little feat of telekinesis that turns everything around -- maybe after they have planted the bombs the remote trigger is lost in the heat of battle, falling down on a ledge beyond their reach, but Leia pulls herself together and realizes she can flip the switch with her mind. 2) Luke AND LEIA should be present when Vader is unmasked. Instead of a protracted death scene on the Death Star, we should just have seen Luke struggle to drag his disabled father towards a shuttle. Then the Death Star blows and there is a moment of tension: Did Luke get off or not? Then he his voice breaks through on radio: Yes, he is alive ... but he also tells his sister something to the effect that "very little time left" (which she understands, though a confused Han does not). The shuttle lands, Leia runs in ... and the still-confused Han follows, whereupon he is shocked out of his mind to find Luke and Leia kneeling by a barely-breathing Vader. The mask is removed, and Anakin Skywalker gets to see BOTH his children before he expires. Tears flowing from the eyes of both twins, confirming their growth from whiny farmboy and haughty princess to compassionate, mature people (the whole "let go of your hatred" thing doesn't only apply to those on the OTHER side, right?)

And poor Han would be stunned to gather from the few words said that Vader, Luke and Leia were father and children.

This would also have the advantage that the emotional climax of the movie would FOLLOW the destruction of the Death Star, which feels like little more than an anticlimatic afterthought in the existing movie.

Oh well. Too late to remake it know. Wonder why I even bother writing this.Helge Kåre Fauskangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07917877061381887511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4104469133277555786.post-77185020141359326412014-05-10T15:07:14.270+01:002014-05-10T15:07:14.270+01:00I think the main question is; why does Luke have (...I think the main question is; why does Luke have (need) a sister? True, Harrison plays more of a side-character nowadays with limited wiggle room acting-wise, but when it comes to the supposed grumpiness, laziness, etc. that many fault his performances for nothing has really changed, as looking back on his other on-screen portrayals such as Fugitive, Star Wars, Six Days and Seven Nights and the like he has always had that edginess to his characters that could come off as angry or perhaps even laid back at times, but in my opinion he acts virtually the same now as always.

As the star of Indiana Jones 4, though, he got to bring much more to the role, hence it would seem that it is with more screen-time that usually one seems to appreciate his fuller range of acting abilities, and he tends to shine more.
