Benedict Cumberbatch was attending a Q&A event at OZ Comic Con and finally put the rumors of his involvement with Star Wars: Episode 7 to rest...
Here are some tweets from the event with answers from Cumberbatch:
Benedict Cumberbatch has about 1,000 autographs to sign & they're just about to start. Then the Q&A panel after that!

I would've liked a part in JJ's new Star Wars but it won't happen sadly
— The Iris (@TheIrisAU) April 12, 2014
Before he was pretty coy about the topic but now it looks everything is clear. He is a great actor but I continue to believe that no cast from Satr Trek will end up in Star Wars. At least the major roles.
GONE!!!!! But seriously, maybe Benedict will show up in a future Star Wars movie.
ReplyDeleteWith Rebels, all the SW spinoffs planned and EA SW games on the way, there's a lot of Star Wars actors needed that aren't for an "Episode" too.
DeleteJust DROP it guys. He's not in Star Wars. Quit trying to find a silver lining in something that is not there.
DeleteMaybe JJ has changed the iconic opening written credits ( a galaxy far, far away) to a narration and Benedict is the narrator (like in War Of The Worlds - "No one would have believed.... across the gulf of space intellects vast and cool....).
DeleteReally sad thing he was the only one I really wanted to see in it.
ReplyDeleteGlad he's not in it... he played too big a part in Trek. Still, I don't feel sorry for him. He has a great career ahead of him.
ReplyDeleteHe was in Trek so what! Like an actor can't be to two space movies. John Wayne was in a million westerns. Plus isn't a regular on Trek he's a one shot and done character.
DeleteWon't he be in Star Trek 3? His character is still alive.
DeleteThis is for all of you Star Wars fans who for some reason just cant accept this........ first, go to google and type in.....
ReplyDeleteRevenge of the Sith Anakin told about Darth Plagueis The Wise youtube........
now just listen to the first 1 min when Sidious tells Anakin about what the 2 things Darth Plagueis could do.... we all know that he could prevent others from dying... we know that... but, listen to what Sidious first tells Anakin.... when u put 2 and 2 together, and if u have a brain, u will see that Anakin was not the chosen one like many of u keep thinking.... the chosen one never commits evil doings like killing children like Anakin does in part 3... the chosen one doesnt do anything evil period.... Anakin was created by Darth Plagueis period.... And his apprentice ( Sidious ) killed him in his sleep, but he never knew that Anakin was the one that was created by Darth Plagueis... that explains why Anakin was evil, why he was a brat, etc.... he was doomed anyway because the dark side was already consuming him.... Sidious just sped the process up.... So, for all of you so called fans who claim they know the plots, the stories, etc etc go see this site and see it for yourself and listen to what excatly Sidious tells Anakin........ the new trilogy ( 7,8,9 ) will be about the last Skywalker ( chosen one ) probably one of Leias child if Luke doesnt have one........ period...... so type in --- Revenge of the Sith Anakin told about Darth Plagueis The Wise and see for yourself... Lucas gives you a blueprint on what Anakin really is.. the false hope.. the false prophet....... and if some of u still cant see it, then u are really stupid or just cant use common sense cause this arguement about Anakin being the chosen one really is dragging....... and who cares about Cumberbatch... hes a Trekkie.. Star wars need fresh meat, not left overs from Star Trek....
Someone missed the point of the first 6 movies ...
Delete"the chosen one never commits evil doings", really? The Chosen One was to bring balance to the Force. As for him being created by Plaguies that was indirectly true at one point but that novel is no longer canon. Also if you think you have some great theory (which you don't) then elaborate on it instead of directing me to the internet to watch a clip from a movie I've seen dozens of times.
Give it a rest. Lucas himself has repeatedly confirmed that Anakin IS the Chosen One. He said it in the RotS DVD and in SW Insider Q&A.
DeleteAnd you're one to call others stupid, when you cant even spell exactly and argument correctly.
Write some fanfic, bro.
DeleteI agree that Anakin was created through sith magic by Plagueis, but that doesn't prevent him from being the chosen one.
DeleteThe prophecy just says that the chosen one will bring balance to the force and to the galaxy. We can interpret what this means, but we can't say that the chosen one is supposed to not do evil things. The prophecy doesn't say that.
So, let's see what Anakin did in the saga:
He was found on a desert planet, born from a virgin mother, without father ( maybe this was caused by Plagueis the Wise ).
He destroyed the first Trade Federation Revolt ( good behaviour ).
Then he helped the Jedi and the Republic, fighting the Separatist Rebellion in the Clone Wars, killing Count Dooku and many other evil generals ( good behaviour ).
He fell in love with a senator and made two children ( I would consider this good behaviour, because at least he didn't rape her, and because love is universally considered good ).
After that, in ROTS he turned to the dark side, killed all the younglings at the Academy, and wiped out the Jedi Order ( yeah, very very Baaaad behaviour ).
So for now I think it's pretty balanced.
In the OT, he helped the Empire, fighting the new Rebellion, and pursuing the last surviving Jedi ( bad behaviour ).
At the end, though, he turned again to the Light Side, and killed Darth Sidious, the Evil Emperor, putting an end to the Rule of Two, and wiping out the Sith Order ( good behaviour ).
So, at the end of the saga, Anakin did bring balance to the Force, in the way of thinking of George Lucas, because he destroyed the Sith Order and the Dark Side, which was the only cause of the Unbalance.
Even if you don't follow this way of thinking, though, you must still agree that Anakin did bring Balance to the Force and to the Galaxy.
In fact, we can say that at the beginning of the saga the Unbalance was caused by the Jedi Order, that was using the Force to protect a corrupted and decadent political body, the Republic.
The Jedi were too many, and were abandoning the old teachings of the Jedi, teachings of non violence, independence from the politic situation of the Galaxy, and embrace of love.
So the Chosen One was supposed to wipe out the Jedi Order, which he did, but then he was also supposed to wipe out the Sith Order, because they were also causing an unbalance on the other Side. And Anakin did also this.
At the end of the Saga, we have a blank slate in the Force, no Jedi and no Sith. This can easily be interpreted as Balance.
So, yes, Anakin did bring balance to the Force, even if he was created by the Dark Side.
The prophecy said that the Chosen One was to bring Balance to the Force, nothing else, and Anakin did this.
So, using Aristotelian logic, Anakin is the Chosen One.
Now, I'm open to everything as of plot twists and such, so I wouldn't mind if something comes up in 7, saying that Anakin was not the Chosen One for some reason, and that "there is another" [cit. Yoda].
But as of now, Anakin is The One.
Actually, he is right if you really think about it. Lucas himself has changed his mind on things alot. First, Anakin and Vader were different characters until he changed it. leia was never Lukes sister at first until he changed it. The original trilogy never said anything about a chosen one until we first heard of it in The Phantom Menace when Qui-Gon spoke of it. Lucas has changed many things over from his original treatments that it has put many in confusion. Lucas at first said Anakin was the chosen one but now once again has changed things and that's why in Revenge of the Sith, we saw that. And, if they decided Anakin was the chosen one, then what plot is there in the new trilogy ? And of course the sith is still out there. Didn't they say that we will see the sith planet Morriban ?. It's obvious that some of you that come in here with your opinions did't follow the story like you claim because either you are too far stuck in the EU, or you just live in your dream world with Anakin. It seems most fans either can't remember or just can't except it. Lucas changes his mind so much that you can't count anything out. After seeing this scene from Revenge of the Sith, im convinced now that darth Plagueis is the father of Anakin. So cry all you want, that's the facts. And if you fans are going to be far stuck in the EU world wanting to make part 7 the way the novels are, your gonna find yourself in a sad place. I agree, the first trilogy was about the false prophet Anakin, the secon about the redemption of the twins. So the third trilogy will be about the chosen one. the last skywalker. Honestly, i agree, i can't believe that some of you fans can't figure this out.
DeleteDarth Plaguis' deeds were more like legends. If he really had the power to raise the dead, Palpatine would have learned it. Perhaps Padme would have been saved. Anakin was the Chosen One. Star Wars is the saga about Anakin Skywalker. Lucas said so.
Delete(And you morons say we're stupid for liking the prequels and Mara Jade.)
Anakin was created by the Force, the same way Jesus Christ was born from a virgin woman. That same Force power also "rewarded" those important to the balancing process by allowing them to attain immortality (yoda, obi wan, qui gonn, anakin.) some of you guys are making this more complicated than it needs to be.
DeleteThe fact that Vader threw the Emperor to his death down the Death Stars reactor shaft, then asks Luke to take his mask off, thereby sealing his own fate and eradicating the Sith from the Galaxy always seemed to me that Anakin Skywalker WAS the chosen one, and bought balance to the Force. But maybe I'm sarcastically missing something.
Deleteat Anonymous 3:49 and 3:52..... In the original story treatments, Lucas did say Anakin was the chosen one. He also said at one time that Anakin and Darth vader was 2 different people. He also said that Luke and Leia was in a love triangle with Han. So what does your arguement really mean ? Nothing. George Lucas has changed his mind many times over. So for you 2 to sit here and yap about Anakin being the chosen one is false. If no more SW movies were going to be made, then yes Anakin would be the chosen one. But, with that scene in Revenge of the sith, it does tell you that Anakin was created by Darth Plaguis the Wise rather you want to like it or not. And for the record, at the end of part 6 ( ROTJ ), Vader didnt save the galaxy like some of you want to say, he killed Darth Sidious to save his son Luke from dying. And the phrase " To bring balance back to the force " actually means " Peace in the Galaxy forever ". So with a new trilogy on the way, and with more sith, you can bet that the balance hasn't happened yet. Some of you fans that are still living to much in the OT and PT world with Anakin being this GOD like person is really sick. And for the record, a chosen one who fights for peace would not kill the innocent no matter what you want to cry about. You have to have a false prophet before the real one comes. So some of you use your brains and quit living in the OT and PT world too much. Lucas changes things many times, and this Anakin crap of the chosen one was actually used to confuse movie fans leading up to the new saga to see the real chosen one. Vader is gone. DONE WITH !!!! Get over it.
Deleteat Anonymous 3:52 How can you compare Anakin to Jesus ?. LMAO you dummy. Did Jesus kill kids or the innocent like Anakin ?. NO. Anakin is more like the Antichrist than anything else. Say what you want about Anakin, but in the end, Anakin killed the innocent because of his anger. And the one who brings peace to the galaxy does not go and do evil things like Anakin did at the end. They are right, you Anakin?Vader fans live in another dream world.
DeleteOh for fucks sake. Sometimes people have to do some really shitty things before they realize that they are complete bastards and then repent. How many of you out there have had a parent go of the rails and commit some crazy crime, only until years later they have seen the error in their ways and have tried to make up for it. That is what the Star Wars saga is about. The whole story is about a typical family on Earth but set in a fantasy world.
DeleteGeorge Lucas has said Anakin was the chosen one. He has said this. He said he was the chosen one as Anakin, whilst Vader, destroyed the emperor and destroyed the sith. When he came up with this, there was no hope for a new trilogy. Now that there is a new trilogy, and it turns out Anakin was not the chosen one, this is all entirely new. He did not plan this when writing the script for Episode 3. To try and claim that Anakin wasn't the chosen one because he also did bad things, is completely stupid and doesn't make any sense.
DeleteOh really ? The sith are gone ? Then why are they gonna show the sith planet in part 7 ? So you saying there will be nothing on the sith planet but mountains ? LMFAO !!!!!!!!
DeleteSpeaking of Revenge of The Sith scene with Anakin and Sidious, check out the scene in the same movie when Mace said he didnt trust Anakin. Obi-Wan said isnt he supposed to be the chosen one. mace replied saying that is what the prophecy said. And then Yoda says, " A prophecy misread perhaps "...... BINGO. That tells you right there that Anakin wasnt the chosen one. PERIOD. Lucas might have said Anakin was the one ,until episode 3 was made and he changed it up like he's changed many things.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Deletemate he was the chosen one in the end, he did defeat the sith, just had to turn bad first. its all about balance, episode 3 there was thousands of jedi, and a couple of sith, this was totally out of balance. anakin/vader was always there to bring balance to the force. towards the end of jedi it was left with 2 sith and one jedi, so he brought balance there too
DeleteAt Anonymous April 12, 2014 at 3:48 PM
DeleteLol, you are the same guy who made the first post. It's so obvious.
Nice trolling, but you have to change the way you write if you want to make a fake reply to yourself.
Study your trolling, bro. Bye.
;-D
So what that yoda said that the prophecy might have been misread? How is that evidence whEN GEORGE HAS SPECIFICALLY SAID HE WAS THE CHOSEN ONE.
Deletelmao "Anakin was a false prophet". A false prophet is someone who lies about their significance. Anakin never did that. The Jedi claimed he was the chosen one, and they were correct. As George revealed, he killed palpatine and brought balance back to the force. Now in episode 7, which haas been confirmed it's set 35 years after the events of episode 6, the force will become unbalanced again. What's the difficulty in understanding this very simple idea?
Delete"the chosen one never commits evil doings like killing children like Anakin does in part 3... the chosen one doesnt do anything evil period...."
DeleteOh, and making up facts is also a really bad excuse for an argument.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Delete"Who fkn cares." .. um you..? This article has nothing to do with Anakin yet you decided to write a huge paragraph about how "Anakin isn't the chosen one". Then all the people with a brain simply corrected you.. The only one crying about "Anakin this and that" is you lol.
DeleteGood thread here... Anakin was the Chosen One for a brief time. He brought peace to the Force for a time, but the Dark Side always finds a way to come back. That's the point of Anakin, that he used rage to conquer and he burned out quickly, kind of like Macbeth. It only took Luke to grow up and confront him that he was defeated by his own compassion for his son and threw Palpatine into oblivion.
DeleteAnon @ 4:31,
Delete3:52 did not compare Anakin to Jesus. He only said that Anakin was born to a virgin mother, like Jesus. And, just FYI, that motif (the Chosen One/Messiah born of a virgin mother) is not exclusive to Christians. The Aztecs also believed that Quetzalcóatl (their own Chosen One) would be born of a virgin mother: Tonantzin (mother Earth), among other savior archetypes.
Lucas himself acknolwedged this, as he always kept drawing from the most classic and common myths in the history of mankind for inspiration. So calm your religious horses down, and learn some history and general culture of the world, instead.
So the topic was Benedict Cumberbatch and we end up talking about how some guy missed the point of Star Wars. Interesting ...
DeleteRegardless of what Anakin/Vader did in the films, he did bring balance to the force in The Clone Wars season three during the Mortis story arc when he killed the Son. The Father confirmed what he had done. By the time ROTS rolled around, Anakin had already fulfilled the prophecy. He just chose to throw it out of whack again later. Some don't pay much attention to The Clone Wars; I myself am a fan (especially of the latter seasons) and Disney/Lucasfilm is considering it canon so you have to take it in to account.
DeleteFettman how do you sarcastically miss something?
DeleteHA HA HA... LUCAS BULLSHITS.... STARWARS IS NOT LUCAS FROM THE TIME TIMOTHY GOT IN ... PERIOD... STARWARS HAD A NOVEL TIMELINE ( ADD LEGACY ) Then video games came in and other bullshit stories. WE ARE NOT IDIOTIC youngsters...WE ARE the generation in the mid 40s we spend thousands of dollars in buying all the novels and comics AND WE WILL NOT tolerate any stupid ideas and scenarios...
DeleteAs fun as it was to look at blue-faced-white-eyed Cumberbatch as Thrawn on reddit, this is probably for the best and not that surprising considering how the screenplay's been modified and characters have been cut/added/re-imagined.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't that be red eyed? Not being An Eu fanatic or anything.
DeleteI personally think Hugo Weaving looks best as Thrawn but the character probably won't be in any of the movies lol
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
DeletePersonally, I'm glad Cumberbatch isn't in it. He's in everything, and it's bad enough to have a Star Trek-Star Wars director crossover.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you! I also think that Star Trek-Star Wars director crossover is quite bad. It could be more or less a similar type of approach in Star War as it is in Star Trek.
DeleteWTH, who cares he directed both. Robert Wise directed The Day the Earth Stood Still & Trek. Whats with the fanboy limits.
DeleteI have a mix feeling when read this..glad and disappointed.
ReplyDeleteGlad he isn't in it because otherwise he will, somehow, get an image as a "JJ Abram man". Don't get me wrong...I think JJ Abram is a great director, Star Trek things is amazing..but I just don't want Benedict to be pin point with certain director. He's a great actor and I'm looking forward seeing him in different type of movies with different director style.
I also feel disappointed because it means I can't see his superb acting in a great Star Wars movie.
Didnt he also say he wasn't playing Kahn?
ReplyDelete(jst kidding guys...)
I wonder which high profile actors will be in. Hopefully they don't go in the direction of picking high profile actors because people fangirl over them.. Sir-Alec-Guiness and Peter Cushing were brilliant casting choices because they were perfect choices for the character, not because 12 year old girls love them. For instance I really like the rumour about Judi Dench being in the film, while rumours about Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling make my stomach churn.
ReplyDeletewhy are you attacking fangirls? How about fanboys, you know, the majority of Star Wars fans? Now that I think about it, Cumberbatch is exactly that, the obsessive wish of giggling fanboys who haven't had enough Star Trek into Darkness.
DeleteLMFAO @ all the guys thinking all the books are non cannon. when in fact the only non cannon books are mostly in the time period after Return Of the jedi
ReplyDeleteAlso I think I remember a tweet from I think, Pablo Hildago saying anything from Outbound Flight on was non canon. I remember seeing something to that effect on this site.
DeleteOf course he's not. He would bring nothing but baggage from other movies. That's why casting unknowns solves a lot of problems.

ReplyDeleteI 100% agree why fight over such petty things. We are all family here and we should be curious to one another
DeleteHey, cool runnings guys. But it was funny to see the comments go from Benedict Cumberbatch to Anakin Skywalker & back.
DeleteStoked about Gary Oldmam and Hilary Swank.
ReplyDeleteUm, Hilary Swank? Did I miss something... she is one of the best.
Delete...agree completely with WackyBantha - this is a great site but there`s a lack of respect to one another in a lot of the comments posted;at the end of the day we`re all here because we love Star Wars (I grew up with the OT but I loved the PT as well - I acknowledge they aren`t perfect films but then again what is perfect - nothing!);sorry to hear that Cumberbatch isn`t in - would`ve thought this more or less confirms Gary Oldman`s casting as it seemed to be a straight fight between the 2 (sure Oldman will be a fine addition to the film)...Andy.
ReplyDelete...also meant to add in my post that I`ve never read any of the EU,just not for me,but I fully respect all those who have - what floats some people`s boat doesn`t float others,it doesn`t make one person wrong and one person right though, and I certainly wouldn`t get agressive over it...just looking forward to the next few years, such a special time being a Star Wars at the moment...Andy.
DeleteWell not really. Gary just confirmed that he was one of the actors they called. We don't know if it was for the same role at Benedict's potential role, and they most likely inquired to loads of different actors.
DeleteWOW everyone here has gone bat shit insane.
ReplyDeleteThis aint no Batman site, this is Star Wars and Wars have conflict.
DeleteYo this new Star Wars should have the tag line, this ain't your fanboys Star Wars!!!!
Sideous manipulated the midichlorians to "create life" (Anakin). Not Plagueis. "He taught his apprentice everything he knew."
ReplyDeleteThis SAGA is about that tainted Bloodline. Balance will be reached when that bloodline is severed.
Good times for SW fans :)
ReplyDeleteOh well, he would have fit in well. They have a good enough cast already im sure. All the focus is gonna be on luke though so its all good
ReplyDeleteThank god
ReplyDeleteAfter the "I am Khan" disaster I would rather not see Bendadick Cumabunch anywhere near this film.

ReplyDeleteWhile your opinion of Anakin not being the chosen one COULD be correct, the "facts" you're pointing to are purely conjecture based on your interpretation of a very vague prophesy, as well as your opinion that the chosen one is incapable of sin. You present your opinions as facts and call others stupid for not agreeing with you. This is hypocrisy. I'm not saying that Anakin IS the chosen one (but yes I do think he is), but I think your logic is highly flawed. Firstly, as someone else very correctly pointed out, the Prequels heavily infer that Anakin is a Jesus archetype. Immaculate conception, born into poverty, humble and good child, destined to do great things, even his origins on Tatooine could be seen as reference to Egypt where Jesus spent his early childhood years before traveling to Canaan. The major difference between Anakin and Jesus come at the point where Anakin is seduced to the dark side by Darth Sidous, but again this is paralleled in the bible with The Temptation of Christ. Jesus, told to wander in the desert without food, is approached by satan, who offers him sustenance to break his vows. The story of Anakin turning into Vader can be seen as a "what-if" type story. "What-if" Jesus had been tempted by Satan? What kind of man would he have become? Your reasoning that the chosen one isn't allowed to do bad things is purely opinion, and you are entirely mistaken about the Anakin/Jesus parallel. This is not coincidence, much of Star Wars is based on existing mythology from all over the world and it is ignorant of you to think George Lucas didn't include some (if not all) of the above points intentionally. In my opinion the Jesus parallels heavily imply the central importance of Anakin Skywalker in the overarching star wars methos. With all evidence pointing directly to it your opinions carry very little weight convincing others, especially with your poor grammar, insults cast at opposing views and all round ignorance. Now all that ranting has weakened my resolve and I'll allow myself a small moment of sinking to your level; stop being a dopey-cuntbag and agree to disagree, or at least treat other's opinions as valid until you can show a shred of empirical evidence.
Viral don't like you typing Dopey-cunt bag! Be nicey!
DeleteCould that be why Maul kind of looks like the Devil?
DeleteMaul looks like a demon, which like the savior-born-of-a-virgin-mother, is not exclusive to Christianity.
DeleteBut essentially, yes. Lucas used a combination of demon images as inspiration for Darth Maul.
There's a temptation here to hate the people whose arguments you disagree with. I find it very easy to hate people on here, because we disagree on an emotion level. Que sera! C'est la vie!
ReplyDeleteWhat system is Que Sera in?
ReplyDeleteProbably in the vicinity of Kamino, since both are Spanish words. Qué Será means "what will be" and Camino (with a C) means "road" or "path".
DeleteI cant believe some of the stupid shit I read here sometimes. How can you "briefly" be the chosen one?
ReplyDeleteIts funny how ancient cultures have a "born of a virgin mother might be the choden one" story. Nowdays we call them hermaphrodites.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't believe that telling someone who is is acting like a dopey-cuntbag that their actions aren't very polite, and that they should refrain, is really all that much of an insult... More like a public service? (⌒▽⌒)
ReplyDeleteBut joking aside, I have nothing wrong with his theory. It may very well end up being true once the new trilogy is released. I just feel the reasoning behind his theory isn't very sound and based purely on opinion, and that attacking other people's intelligence because they don't share your opinion is how a child debates. Also, I want to make sure that people don't read my previous comment and think I'm getting all religious and preachy (as I am an atheist). I'm just pointing out the parallels between the two figures, and that Anakin fits into the same archetype. As others have pointed out there are dozens of examples of a Jesus type character in many cultures (many long predating Christianity). My point was that the striking similarities between Jesus and Anakin are meant to emphasise Anakin's "holy" status as a messiah. Regardless of the character's evil actions or how you as an individual interpret the prophesy and just how he did/did not fulfil it, the obvious religious and spiritual references paint a pretty specific picture.
TOO BAD JJ....TOO BAD...
ReplyDeleteSorry, Benedict. You can't always get what you waaant...
