The 83-year old actor who voiced Darth Vader in the Original Trilogy spoke to Variety in honor of the release of a filmed version of the acclaimed stage play Driving Miss Daisy. He briefly discussed the Star Wars sequels among other things...
From Variety:
Disney is planning three new “Star Wars” sequels and a variety of spin-off films. Darth Vader may have died in “Return of the Jedi,” but is there any chance you’ll be involved in these films?
Oh no. I’ve got no illusions that I will or even hankerings to be in them, but I’m very proud to have been part of the original.
Will you see the next “Star Wars” film when it comes out?
Perhaps. I have no idea where they’ll go with it, but I hope they sustain the success of the first ones and do it well.
How about Darth Vader spin-off, between episodes III and IV?
ReplyDeleteThe one thing so many fans have wanted.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy how, with the abundance of Star Wars content covering that general period. we don't get to see Vader hunting down the Jedi in a series of epic lightsaber fights. :-/
This should happen at least sometime in the Star Wars: Rebels series.
DeleteThere's always sound-alikes out there if it comes to it. Not that I wouldn't rather James, he's a class act. I think they should get way from Vader in the new trilogy, he's dead, he redeemed himself, let him RIP. Robot Vader clones, maybe, but not the real Anakin.
ReplyDelete> Robot Vader clones, maybe, but not the real Anakin.
DeletePlease no.
James Earl Jones contribution is so key to the original SW films, I feel it was a large disservice not only to him, but to the character of Dart Vader, by having J.E.J. replace and/or add new irrelevant lines to the Special Editions/Blu Rays.
ReplyDeleteThe "NOO" added to Darth before he attacks the Emperor at the conclusion of ROTJ was utterly pointless, when Darth's silence and countenance told you all that was needed in that scene about his conflicted emotions in that moment.
Plus replacing "BRING MY SHUTTLE" from ESB ( after Luke falls in the Cloud City chamber ) was replaced by a long and tiresome line ( "Alert the Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" ), which just does not work for me.
"Bring My Shuttle" - short, terse, always impacted me a child - I felt Darth Vader's anger, confusion and hurt (after the fateful plunge Luke chose for himself), all the while he tried to maintain his composure in front of his imperial subordinates.
The new replacement line invoked none of that emotion, and sounded like any casual line that could be spoken after any meeting.
great points
DeleteI concur, great points. Those NOO's just ruin the scene, it clues you in to his inner battle, and therefore you know he is going to act. I remember watching that scene as a kid in the theatre with my Mom and her muttering: "Do something, do something", but with that addition of NO, it took away that suspense. In addition, I watched ROTJ last night, I cringe when I see the older ethereal Anakin replaced by the young ethereal Anakin. I really hate that.
DeleteThe added "NOs" in the climatic moments before Vader turns on the Emperor don't ruin the scene, but they are certainly unnecessary. For the sake of suspense, it is better to leave the audience clueless as to what is going on in Vader's mind until he suddenly acts.
DeleteBut the replacement of Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen as the etheral Anakin was probably inevitable, to make the whole story fit together. I remember reading one internet account by a father who watched all six films with his young (pre-10) sons. They had also been watching the Clone Wars, so they were very familiar with Anakin Skywalker as a great hero. Watching his fall in Episode III was quite shocking and troublesome for the boys, but the end of the (revised) Episode VI was all the more cathartic: "He's Anakin again!" Seeing some elderly guy they wouldn't even recognize would have meant nothing to them.
Dont forget the stupid new dialog with emperor - I have no doubt he is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker. I almost expected that at that moment Palpy will turn to the audience, because we are morons and more detailed speech was needed....
ReplyDeleteYep, again totally pointless. I also prefer youtube user 'Adywan's version of the ESB Emperor scene when compared with the actual Special Edition. Far superior in my opinion ( even though I'd be much more happier with the original Emperor hologram from ESB ).
DeleteAuch wenn er in dem neuen Film wäre es immer noch nicht sagen, spielen
ReplyDeleteEnglish, please! Or at least use Google Translate...
DeleteEpisode 7 will be a big flop
ReplyDeleteBecause of some rumor you heard on the internet?
DeleteWhy are you trolling?

DeleteThe ONLY good thing that would result of this movie tanking is that it will utterly and irrevocably destroy Abrahm's career once and for all, now & forever ....
DeleteJ.E. Jones is a class act.Perhaps their could be flash backs or holocron Vader snippets but that would be it.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see he isn't a grumpy old man about the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteGreat actor! Check him out in the harldy-seen Grim Prairie Tales, a low budget western from the early 90's, he's on top form in that.
it wouldn't involve J.E.Jones, but what if the remnants of the empire incorporate the design of Vaders armour into the black stormtrooper armour? Can you imagine a legion of Vaderlike stormtroopers???
