Star Wars Episode 7 News

Disney is Betting Everything on J.J. Abrams.

Not only J.J. Abrams won't quit directing Star Wars: Episode 7 as some recent rumors suggest but his part in the franchise will be even bigger...

Few months ago when Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy called Abrams’ CAA agent, she's been told Abrams was too deeply engaged in the next Star Trek movie and other side projects to consider the job.
Still, Abrams agreed to meet with Kennedy in Santa Monica. Kennedy had on her side writer Michael Arndt and spin-off consultant and writer Lawrence Kasdan. They were all trying to convince J.J. to direct the movie. Actually Kennedy spent a whole month trying to convince Abrams who finally signed the deal on January 25.

Now why was it so hard to convince J.J. to direct a movie from a franchise that he's been always a fan of? Surely the obligations with Paramount were a reason as well as his family plans (Abrams was supposed to do a small movie and planned to spend more time with his family. Now they have to move from LA to the UK). Actually the main reason for the hard negotiations were because of the scale of involvement Abrams will have on all upcoming Star Wars projects.

I heard from sources close to Abrams that his involvement with Star Wars will be huge. For now he may only be directing Episode 7 but also he will supervise and consult all other side projects from the franchise - games, spin-off movies, TV series etc. And while Kathleen Kennedy will be the managing core of the franchise Abrams will be the creative core through which everything will pass.

Surely that's some bad news for Star Trek fans. There is no way for J.J. to find time and direct the final chapter of the trilogy as some other rumors suggested. Also whether he will only consult or direct another Star Wars movie remains to be seen. Everything depends on Episode 7.

  1. I dunno. Seems like a lot of Trekkies didn't like Into Darkness for whatever reason. So some of them might rejoice.

I find it interesting it sounds like they almost wanted another George Lucas type position. One guy to oversee a massive franchise... I thought that was Kathleen's job.

Still have faith in JJ until I see the movies. Then I can gage all my fears/hopes for the future of SW then.

    1. Yeah, I still have faith. I'm glad it's JJ though. Definite concerns but would have them with anyone. Anyway, 7 is under way - Kennedy and Abrams are leading the ship. IT HAS GOT TO BE A 5 STAR MOVIE!

    2. That is - IT MUST BE A 5 STAR MOVIE! The Empire Strikes Back must be dethroned by Ep. 7 as the best film in the series. It is imperative.

  2. My dad was born in 1954 and was there for the TOS pilot and that was well before anybody ever heard of the abbreviation TOS. My Dad is not a trekkie but he is the biggest STAR TREK TOS fan in the world he loves TOS and does not acknowledge that any other trek exists, until JJ Abrams made his trek films, my dad loves them. As a matter of fact when me and my dad finished the credits for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS he said and I quote "THAT WAS THE BEST DAMN TREK FILM I EVER SAW"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO with that, all you Trekkies can kiss my A$$ while I gear up for what should be a great Star Wars movie Directed by one of my favorite Directors JJ Abrams, and for the record I dont mind Lens Flares they were in the original Star Wars and my all time favorite director, "Steven Spielberg" uses them alot so I think of them as an homage....

    3. yeh into darkness is a great film, and een though film is subjective I find it hard to understand ho anyone, including stark trek fans couldn't like it a lot, it has a lot of nods and inks in it .

    4. I am as much of a Trekkie as I am a Star Wars fan, and I had been told that most Trekkies didn't like the reboots. I decided to approach it as a new story, with new characters and circumstances. I think we will need to do the same with Ep7 – the characters are both old and new, the circumstances are familiar, yet different... It's a new story, and we need to treat it as such.

  3. Fair enough. I still have some hope for the new star wars movies, they woulld have to try very hard to make them any worse than the prequels.

  4. J.J. Abrams made only few films and they were not that good that this bit** Kathleen must BEG him to direct te most amazing story that ever hit the big screen. I bet that every director who watched Star Wars would be more commited and give his soul only to direct this epic trilogy. It's not an easy job, but with J.J.'s other jobs, his family and who knows what else, I can't help but ask...WHY HIM??? He would'nt even be able to finish the trilogy...Ok, tha's not that important, but ask yourself, if someone give you contract to direct new trilogy, wouldn't you do all 3 movies or just one, if you are a big fun like J.J. claims to be??? I don't have high hopes for this...and I don't like J.J. at all. Just look at Transformers or Star Trek. Star Trek is actually good movie, but both are ACTION SCI FI and STAR WARS IS NOT THAT KIND OF MOVIE!!!! New trilogy should be like Batman trilogy...Ask Nolan. Bring him to direct something epic. Leave the trekkie to the trek universe.

    1. I think J.J. is the perfect guy for SW, just because the two recent STAR TREK movies are not the typical Roddenberry`s stuff that doesn`t means that he is a bad director, SUPER 8 was also good fun to watch, since it was the hommage to the 80's sci-fi/ fantasy films that it was meant to be. Also, Chris Nolan?! are you serious? the guy it`s perffect for bleak and noir dramas, not for family oriented adventure film

  6. we want Darth Vader back. As clone or whatever. The clone won’t have any of the physical flaws that Annakin had it will be a perfect superior version of Vader with enhanced powers and new technology. They more or less have to do this, without Vader it’s not really a Star Wars movie.Chewbacca or other wookies, Darth Vader, Yoda and darth maul is what will turn fans crazy. Most iconic characters are Vader and Yoda. No Vader no Star Wars. No Yoda no star wars.

  7. Abrams will be the DEATH of Star Wars, mark my words ....
Look at what he did to Star Trek.

    1. George Lucas and The Phantom Menance was the death of Star Wars. As long as they hire a real writer to do dialog and spend a good amount on CGI I don't see how there is anyway that the new ones can be worse than the last three. Abrams SAVED Star Trek and updated it. I HOPE he can do that for Star Wars with Micky Mouse sitting on his left shoulder!

      Delete
    2. Star Trek is CRAP! That is why was never popular in Europe for example. Abrams never like it and he was honest about that. Be he make it successful franchises like mission impossible too! Two times in a row highest grossing movies. As for last MI by the way. Without JJ these two will collapse. He made them to appeal to more people than just old fans. Add all new generations and people which don't like treks. If these to franchises stay only with OLD hardcore fans they are dead. Most of these old guys don't even pay and go to cinemas.

As for star wars he is biggest fan of the franchise. He love it. Even he said years ago that star wars is main reason to make so many sci fi genre shows etc.

      Delete
    3. The last 2 Trek films are the highest grossing of all of the Trek films. What do you mean the death of? The death of what? Do you mean the death of Box Office Bombs? If so, OK! Sounds good!

  8. "Star Trek is actually good movie, but both are ACTION SCI FI and STAR WARS IS NOT THAT KIND OF MOVIE!!!! "

Wow.. are you serious??? Star Wars invented Action Sci fi. Did you even see the original trilogy??? (explosions, lightsaber duals, frozen planet battles, speeder chase scene)

If ANYTHING the new Star Trek movies are emulating Star Wars. Star Trek was NEVER an action genre until just recently.

You, my friend, are an idiot.

    1. But The Abrams TREK are more like Star Wars Then any trek that came before it because Abrams is a Star Wars fan he is not a fan Of trek and that is what I like about Abrams Trek in particular.

      Delete
    2. He's not an idiot you are. Have you ever seen the Tng movie's? Old Star War's is not the same kind of "action sci fi" as the new Star Trek, new Star Trek is more like the Star Wars prequel trilogy. by the way the old Star Wars battle and action scene's were based off of old war flims a slower paced type of action.

      Delete
    3. I am not talking about TNG films I agree they were crap, although the one with the nexus and james t kirk, "star trek generations" was actualy pretty fun. I am talking about JJ Abrams two Trek films, I thought Abrams trek was just as entertaining and good as star wars AND I AM A HUGE STAR WARS AND GEORGE LUCAS HOMER.

      Delete
    4. Oh yeah, Star Wars is not any type of ACTION SCI FI at all!

  9. iPadCary... JJAbrams will NOT be the death of Star Wars.. And Yeah I do see what he did to Star Trek... He made it better!

The best thing about JJ Abrams doing this project is his passion for building real life props, and sets. He uses minimal C.G.I. and those of you that hated star wars Episodes 1-3 agree that what made those movies horrible was To much C.G.I.! He doesnt make every movie he touches a love fest, and his passion for star wars makes him realize that if he is going to do star wars then he is going to have to do it right! As a die hard fan of star wars he like many of us knows the story arch and relives the experience of a new hope, The empire strikes back, and Return of the Jedi. That passion and commitment is EXACTLY what we need in this new film! Also JJ has said that he dropped multiple other projects so at to focus soley on Star Wars. So He may not be directing another Star Trek film...

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree passion and commitment is what will make Star Wars 7 best episode ever. But also add and his brain and creativity. Hey he create best sci fi drama OF ALL TIME and even critics name it TOP TEN DRAMA OF ALL TIME! Only drama series nominated for EMMYS every single year for outstanding drama series.

  11. Abrams turn Trek&MI movies a lot more watchable&entertaining for the people(mainstream movies)! No doubt about that. He saved both movies(tom cruise still sucks). But for Star Wars he need more. He need good script from Michael Arndt, best themes from John williams and his genius directing&mythology from lost. Lost pilot is still best what he do in my opinion.

ps I think we must wait and see if episode 7 is great no doubt he must stay with star wars. I guess they want to make deal now and lock him because if star wars episode 7 is great disney will need to pay him a lot more than now.

  12. And for the record I loved Jar Jar Binks and the phantom menace and still do. Over at the forcenet message boards when the tenth Aniversary for the phantom menace came around in 2009 a thread was started titled "THE PHANTOM MENACE 10 YEARS LATER, HAS TIME SOFTENED YOUR VIEW"? and most people said over time they have realy grown to like the film some even said they loved it after years of hating it. So I would say the new films should not change that much from the prequels as they were loved by many including me, Episode 2 being my favorite out of the prequels, but the new films should also take visual clues from episodes 4 5 and 6 and maybe scale down some of the CGI to please the old school haters even though I think most star wars fans loved the prequels and had no problem with the CGI including my self.......

YOU DONT GO SEE A MOVIE 20 SOME ODD TIMES, AND YES MANY PEOPLE ON THE FORCE.NET MESSAGE BOARD PROCLAIMED THEY SAW THE FILMS 20 OR MORE TIMES, I SAW EPISODE 3, 7 TIMES AND I LOVED IT EVERY TIME, I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO SEE THEM 20 TIMES IF I COULD I WOULD HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. sorry but imo the prequels are weak, bad script, not well directed and too much cgi. There are good moments and good ideas in them but overall they are a dissapointment.

    4. you are in the minority, sorry to have to break this news to you, the box office does not lie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    5. Also can you point out to me in all of the prequels what exactly was CGI- and what was a practical set/ minature, I will give you one from each prequel, 1. in episode 1 when the hero chrachters were riding in the Gungun sub on Naboo that was filmed in a cave in Italy with a fog machine. 2. in episode 2 the scenes on the water planet were actualy done with minature sets. 3. and in episode 3 Mustafar was a set the size of my living room and the lava was a food additive, if you can honestly say you new all of that and still dont like it because of CGI then I would say you are blind and I could name 20-30 more examples but I would be writing all day. Let me ask you a question what big blockbuster film hasn't had loads of CGI? yet people dont complain about other movies like they do to star wars. What did you think of LORD OF THE RINGS CGI? I think they all had just as much CGI if not more then Star Wars especially the two towers, the return of the king, and the hobbit. the same complaints that are being brught up about technical Efects was also being brught up back in 1977 for the original star wars movies by one of George Lucas and Steven Spielbergs biggest haters "pauline kael" and many others and what that tells me is the movies are fine but the fans and the critics are the evil jaded ones who have to evolve with the times. CGI is hear to stay and it is getting better and better as was evident in the new trek movie my advice to all the haters either get over it or move on to the next obsesion.....

      Delete
    6. Yes i know there were minature set used too, and they were well done and as i said there were good moments in the films but overall- disapointing. some of the cgi was well done too but some of it wasnt. In lord OF THE Rings the cgi was mostly well done apart from the worg battlein the two towers which was not up to the standard of the other cgi but still good. the twilight sagaa has made a lot of money too and its not very good. but i am a star wars fan and just hope the new ones are better than the prEquEls thats all.

    7. What about the scene with legolas and the Oliphante IT looked like a giant cartoon and for that matter most of Return Of The King looked like a giant cartoon and all of PJ'S movies had tons of CGI. I am guessing you are a kid or a chick if you liked twilight becuase most self respecting adults, like my self, know that twilight is utter crap. You do know my comment about minature's and practical effects was to point out that most people cant even tell what is a practical effect and what is CGI and being that you cant name me any others, and yes there were many others, I assume you dont know what is CGI and what is not.

, if you can honestly say you new all of that and still dont like it because of CGI then I would say you are blind and I could name 20-30 more examples but I would be writing all day. Let me ask you a question what big blockbuster film hasn't had loads of CGI?

      Delete
    8. I didn't say i liked twilight i used it as an example of a crap film making lots of money, popular doesnt always mean good.
I also didnt say that it was just the cgi that made me think the prequels were weak, the script, the directing were weak. But i also said they had good moments and good ideas in them.
I also think that return of the king is the weakest of the loTR movies. when cGI is used well iT looks Good. But like you i am not going to sit here making a list of things to point out.

the whole point i am making is that compared to the original trilogy the prequels are weak and in the original trilogy evan return of the jedi is the weakest of that trilogy. but i havve hope for the new ones and no i am not a child or female and i am a fan of star wars.

      Delete
    9. Box Office does say how good a film is becuase people dont see a movie they hate 20 or more times end of story. and none of the prequels were crap they were visual masterpieces that got trashed online by a minority nerd group called STAR WARS FAN BOYS. You honestly think the acting in the original films was better? You have to be joking me, WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING BECUASE I would like a hit of that.

    11. The only reason so many people don't like the PT is because it wasn't the exact down to the last word, set, character that they wanted it to be. The PT is AWESOME!

  14. what I meant by, whhat movies dont have Cgi I meant since 1999 to be exact becuase all big blockbusters have had CGI since 1999 yet the one that gets all the flac is The star wars prequels and I dont think that is fair.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Also, remember the Prequels were filmed almost ten years ago, I know that is scary but in 2 years it will be 10 years since revenge of the sith, and it has been 14 years since the phantom menace alot of advancements have been made in the visual effects in movies since the prequels. Quite frankly CGI is a hell of alot better since the prequels. 2 examples I will give you, this past summer Star Trek Into Darknes had the best CGI I have ever seen becuase it was so good that I couldn't tell what was CGI and what was practical effect it was seamles almost like a film from the 80's the only glaring shot was the ship taking off out of the water but it was so brief that I did not care, and the scene with the primitive Aliens drawing pictograph's of the ship was a nice nod at one of my guilty pleasure hobbies "ancient aliens RESEARCH" Whitch consists of watching AA programs on the H2 Network and reading books like "Chariots of the Gods" by Erich von Däniken!!!!!!!!!! the other movie I will bring up is Red Tails Not only did I love it when I saw it in the theater but it had real good CGI when the planes were in action I felt like I was was along for the ride. If Lucasfilms were smart and I think they are they will update all the prequel CGI and when they do I think it will make alot of people happy.....

    ReplyDelete
  16. I know this is slightly off topic but I think it has relevance becuase it is a topic related to my last post, without further ado here is my Red tails review I made for another website,

I think Red Tails was the best film of the year so far. I have actually seen worse films win an Oscar for best picture let alone been nominated. If Red Tails doesn't at least get nominated for best picture for the 2013 Oscars then I call foul and a big shame on the people who vote for the Oscars. I think Red Tails had groundbreaking special effects Which I have to hand it to George Lucas and ILM, splendid special effects indeed! The acting was really superb. If some of the actors in this film are not up for awards for acting at the Oscars then I will say again, I call foul and a big shame on the people that vote for the Oscars. I think the reason the media didn't like the film is because they are racist and they hate George Lucas. I would recommend this movie to any one who wants to be entertained and to people who want to see a historically accurate film about the Tuskegee Airmen , who by the way "THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN LOVED THE MOVIE AND SAID IT WAS SO ACURATE THEY WALKED OUT OF THE THEATER CRYING"

    ReplyDelete
  17. And just to be clear I know one of the oscar voters he is an alcoholic, Racist loser. he is the car salesman from the movie road house he was also in the Aligator movie that came out I believe in the 70's or the 80's and he claims to have been in the movie DELIVERANCE and this Loser played on the Atlanta Falcons in the 70's if the rest of the Oscar voter's are all Drunk out of there mind Alcoholics, Racist, Losers then It stands to reason whe none of my favorite movies like, STAR WARS/INDIANA JONES has won any big awards.

    1. Off topic is correct... I'll leave the general bulk of what you said alone in fear of dragging out some crazy conversion more so than it already is.

It's already been passed over by the Oscars. It's not even eligible for this years group since it came during last years event.

While I agree some Oscar winners have been terrible (Crash) I feel Red Tails has gotten exactly the amount of awards it deserved.

    2. The review was done last year, and the story about the Oscar voter is tottaly true My mom knows him he goes by the name JP but that is just his internet name I wont give out his real name on the net out of respect. and I have talked to him over the phone a few times my mom actualy met him, trust me every thing I said about him is true. as for Red Tails you honestly cant name at least A hand full of films that got nominated or won an oscar for best picture or actor that were worse then red tails? how about annie hall that movie was crap and somehow beat out STAR WARS in 1977 what do you think of them apples? I guess we will have to agree to disagree I thought Red Tails was a beautiful film with a story that had to be told and I thought it deserved an award just as much as any film that got nominated or won last year. for anyone who doubts how good red tails is hear you go straight from the pilots who flew the misions,

I enjoyed Crystal Skull for what it was, but she did seem to put Indiana's boys in a sling. Wasn't she the one that wanted Indiana to use a CGI whip? Not to mention, I don't think Indiana used his gun hardly at all.

    1. Again to each his own I loved Crystal Skull, was it as good as raiders; NO but it was just as good as Temple Of doom. How can you tell me that the watter tower tiping over, the 20 foot jump on the tracks in the mine car chase, or most of the bridge scene with the the fake crocs was any more real looking then the CGI In Crystal skull. Again I want what you are smoking please pass the pipe!!!!!!!! Also the CGI in Crystal Skull was hardly in the film mostly in the temple with the aliens. I think you are nit picking just to nit pick.
And I have the darabont script in a big binder in my room and I have read it twice, it reads like a kid wrote it its crap, all that has to be said is, "WELCOME TO EARTH" ? Didn't that line get used in another movie? OH' ya it was Indipendance Day. I thought the script we got was better then Darabonts and with my love of everything ancient aliens I loved the story and plot, enough said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Does anyone know any true details on Star Wars 7? I heard from a friend that it was going to be centered around Bobo, but he is dead like Vadar. In Episode 6 Vadar died by the Emperor and then his body was burned by Luke. In books and Star Wars games it was impossible to perfectly clone a jedi or sith or any kind of force user. Even Master Yoda even commented that it could not be done. Then their is a book that I found of a Star Wars episode called "The Last Command." Does anyone know any details of Episode 7?
