Star Wars Poster Artist Drew Struzan Not Returning for the New Movies?

Drew Struzan made some of the most iconic film posters of our time. He has made many memorable posters for movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, Blade Runner, Harry Potter and many more. Although now officially retired, few months ago there were rumors that Drew has been asked to do the posters for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7. Later he denied the rumors and now there are reports that he backed away from designing anything for the new movies. Read the full story after the jump...

Here's what the famous artist told voice.fan.tv few months ago:
Fanhattan: Last time you and I chatted, you talked about being retired, so I’m thrilled to see new work from you. Are you working on any big new projects.

Drew Struzan: Oh, well, never say never, [laughs] because…in fact, I got a couple calls already this week on Star Wars from Disney. Oh my god, I’m trying to be retired! You know, I spent 35 years painting Star Wars. [laughs] I painted Star Wars before most of you were born! But I guess there is always a chance. There’s no intention. But I would love to have a day off every now and again, and I have to work a weekend and all through the night. If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible.

Later Drew himself shared on Facebook that he was misunderstood:
Misunderstood… A couple of friends at Disney were fantasizing about the new STAR WARS movies. ”Disney” has said nothing to me and I expect nothing. That a couple of friends were wishing is only an expression of the hope that many are sharing but says nothing regarding the Studio itself. Even if ‘they’ did ask, which Disney has not, I’d rather leave the new films to the next generation to interpret. I’ve had my time and they were exceptional blessings for which I will forever be grateful. Tomorrow is a new day…drew.

Now according to jedinews:

Drew Struzen can't be convinced to come on board for the poster. Now looking at BLT Communications LLC to do the design.

If this turns out to be true it'll be a real loss for the franchise. Still Drew really deserves the rest and free time with his family after so many years of hard work. The new rumored company has some really exceptional posters. Unfortunately they doesn't have the hand drawn look of Drew's work. So obviously we could expect more photo-realistic Episode 7 posters or more stylistic ones. Check out some of BLT's work.

  1. This is one of those times... a new generation doesn't have to take over if the master still feels up for it. I say if he wants to... let him do it.

If not... well it's only a poster. Far bigger concerns face these movies.

    1. When it boils down to it? I'd gladly sacrifice a poster for the greater good :P

That said I totally agree his work is iconic... but it still is only a poster. I would love to see him return. However I'm not going to lose any sleep over it if he doesn't.

  6. This is horrible news. Disney sent out good signals by making the effort to keep the things that worked with Star Wars, one of which was Struzan's posters:

Hopefully this doesn't begin a downward spiral of bad news with this production.
