In a presentation at the UBS Global Technology Conference, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen revealed some details about the upcoming Star Wars games...

One last topic we wanted to talk about was the next Star Wars game, the franchise that will come through the licensing deal with Disney; if you could help us understand how that came about, sort of what are the challenges and opportunities of developing that kind of game alongside of, obviously, an enormous movie title that will no doubt do big business?

Blake J. Jorgensen

Yes, so I mean we’ve done movie games over the years and we wanted to make sure that we weren’t doing a movie game i.e., game based on the movie, the beauty of the Star Wars franchise is that it's so broad and so deep, you don’t have to do a movie game, you can do a game that's very focused on the world that's been created around Star Wars.

We had a long relationship obviously with Lucas on the original Star Wars and when Disney took over Lucas, they really wanted to maintain a video game business around Star Wars. They felt it was very valuable and a lot of people loved the games historically.

And so they came to us because of our partnership and they knew that we could help them develop really great games and we struck what we believe is a fantastic deal which allows us to be able to build games in many different genres across multiple types of platforms over 10 years and we’ll leverage the strength of the Disney marketing associated with the Star Wars properties both in movies and other things that they may do over the timeframe. We’ll try to align those with that marketing, power the Disney has so it will get aligned with timing around the movies, but it won’t necessarily be aligned with the movie.

We’ve shown a trailer for one of the possible games that we’re going to make Battlefront and it’s got a lot of people very excited because it’s a very popular game from before. We have the team in DICE, building some early stages of various games and building them in Frostbite, so it will be a very exciting game play and you’ll hear more about it in the years to come, but we’re very excited about the opportunity.

So you have a fair bit of flexibility to create content around the universe in general that J.J. Abrams and his team is going to build up with the Lucasfilm’s franchise. It’s not totally tied in just to the movies.

Blake J. Jorgensen

Yes, definitely very much – so, very much around the historical types of games as in play plus new games that we’re inventing around their content, around the broad Star Wars content, and around some of the new assets that they may produce over time as well.

DICE, Visceral Games and BioWare are currently developing new “Star Wars” games for EA, with the first, “Star Wars: Battlefront,” expected to be released in 2015, the same year Disney and Lucasfilm release “Star Wars: Episode VIII” on December 18.

They’ve already released “Star Wars: Tiny Death Star,” produced by “Tiny Tower” makers NimbleBit, and a sequel to “Angry Birds: Star Wars,” with Rovio.

  1. Thanks the maker that they are aiming for games NOT related to the movies. I mean, the movies are great but as a gamer. I want the game stories to be different from the movies.

I guess this is why KOTOR were the best SW games ever made!

    1. Don't forget about games like Shadows of the Empire! I would definitley agree that KOTOR takes the cake for being the best campaign-based Star Wars EU game, but the Battlefront games weren't bad at all either. I was ecstatic when I heard DICE was putting out the next one. That game will be incredible!

    2. Honestly, I didn't play Shadows of the Empire and Battlefront was good but the campaign was usually very short. There wasn't any storyline at all. I played Force Unleashed and it gotten too repetitive for me to carry on.

There was X-Wings Vs TIE, a game I really like but Lucasart or Lucas himself, never gave fans the satisfaction of another X-Wing games. Now that Disney is in charge and let EA to develop future SW games. I don't know. They effed up everyone's fave Soap and killed him off. The same for Army Of Two Devil's Cartel, omg, what were the thinking?

1313 looks like something that would be finally what fans could finally get a good game and poof, whoever that damn idiot who decided to canned this should be fired and never allow back into the gaming business. It was a game that looks like Uncharted which is another fave of mine.

Mass Effect series shoulda been what a SW game should be but didn't! I played all 3 ME games and at times, was jealous it wasn't SW. Imagine a new KOTOR games on the ME style of game play, wow!

My computer ain't for gaming, therefore, I didn't play TOR but honestly, I preferred if they just give us KOTOR 3 instead of MMO.

So, as of right now. The only piece of good news is that they ain't heading towards movie related stories.

    3. Shandows is an awesome game if you can work passed graphics and enjoy the standard 64 bit format. I loved X-Wing Rouge Squadron for the 64. I'd like to see something along those lines return in the future. I don't know if EA is really the company to deliver satusfaction to fans, though.
1313 was one of the best ideas for a Star Wars game I've ever heard. I would've bought that game in a heartbeat. Force Unleashed had some alright Gameplay, but I'm picky about Star Wars history accuracy when referenced in the campaigns and, let's face it, Force Unleashed botched that up pretty bad.
I could totally see an exploration-based Star Wars game with free roam throughout the galaxy, similar to Mass Effect. It'd really give fans a chance to experience the Star Wars universe in all of its' wonders.

    4. Shadows of the Empire was amazing... for the time. Rogue Squadron slowly got worse as time when on while the visuals skyrocketed. By worse I just mean not as good as the original. They were all solid entries.

X-Wing series... it should be illegal for this game to not have a follow up by now. With todays graphics capabilities... my god even Rogue in HD still holds up. I can't imagine the 2 generations of technological advancements would do to it.

Forced Unleashed was a great idea that had potential they just completely threw away. The sequel (if you can even call it that) firmly shut the door on that series.

As for Kotor/Mass Effect... I doubt we will see a true Kotor for a while since Mass Effect is essentially Bioware's epic sci-fi now. Bioware also has to juggle that poor substitute for kotor, The old Republic.

The plus to all of this is EA only has 10 years. That's about 6 to 8 games worth of Star Wars if they really plan to crank em out.

To me my favorite genre for star wars is RTS, Flight Sim/Arcade and Third Person adventure/RPG. Hopefully they cover all of those bases.

      Couldn't agree with that more.

    6. That I also agreed! I can't take first person as I get really nausea. 3rd person shooter like Mass Effect, I am so in!

  2. But what about 1313?? I mean, a game about Boba Fett would be well received. Besides it was a game that was in last stages of production.

    1. Yeah, why did disney just toss a game that pretty much guaranteed high grossing? Not only just about Boba Fett, but his rise to the title of "most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy." It was a really great idea for a game.

    2. I'm fairly sure nobody canceled the game per-se... you gotta remember a part of the team making the game were actually Lucasfilm guys and Disney focused all it's muscle on the movies and essentially out sourced the games department.

So it just came down to... there's no one left to work on the title and the team likely didn't want to hand off their work to some other studio. Don't forget also they believe firmly that videogames are the future of movie making. So that department is likely still testing/fooling around with the idea. It could resurface one day.

    3. AWEVO! I think that you are right, maybe they are just waiting for the riht time. Is not like they will trash something as big as 1313. We just need to wait and see. :)

    4. The the huge uproar response from the fans at the news of this games cancellation or "shelving" or whatever you want to call it, how could they not include Fett in episode 7? His spin off movie will be awesome, no doubt (unless it's animated), but can't they at least just hint at the fact that he wasn't mkilled in ROTJ? It'd be a damn shame if THAT'S how they killed off the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy.

  3. You are right, and, only in case ou didn´t know, fett didn´t die yet. EXPANDED UNIVERSE CONTENT!! they need to consider the expanded universe to create the new star wars, otherwise they will turn hundreds of novels and comic books into non cannon, and this could be disappointing. I´m not saying that they NEED to consider them t do a great movie, but it is highly recomended. Just imagine the return of Fett for episode 8 for example. It would be great!! :D ! (not to mention the ammount of fans who will wet their panties after seeing him again on the big screen !! XD ) jk.

They have to respect the EU, only for the respect they owe to the saga, given the fact that Star Wars is not only 6 movies, they have to consider novels, comics, t.v series, and of course, GAMES!! to make star wars not good, not epic, but PERFECT. :)

    1. I really wish this were the case, but unfortunatly, Abrams has said several times that the expanded universe will have absolutly nothing to do with the new trilogy. That doesn't mean, however, that they can't bring Fett back. They don't have to have Dengar save him the way that it happened in the books, but they could at least throw us a hint that he survived. I mean, the guy is a total badass. He's survived worse things in the past. Why are we to believe that he died in such a sadly pathetic manner?

  4. Not everyone is a fan of the EU, I am one of them who hated it! There are some good and those are stories set before ROTJ.

I hope they don't use anything from the EU, especially those stupid stories set after ROTJ.

    1. You're on your own, buddy. I'll admit, a lot of the EU isn't the best, but there are some stories that really deserved the amount of credit they recieved.

  5. Fett need his own movie. Maybe one with young Han and Chewie? We need to see him being a bad ass that he is, not just a few scenes of him standing around looking cool and screaming before falling into the Sarlacc Pit.

    1. The Fett spinoff movie is scheduled to be released in, I believe, 2016 or 2017; supposed to take place between episodes 5 and 6. This is fairly old news. Han is getting his own spinoff as well, supposed to take place between episodes 3 and 4.
