Rumor: Disney Signed a Three Year Deal to Shoot Star Wars in New Mexico.

star wars

New Mexico has been a hot spot for film location scouting. Some of the recent productions filmed there are Disney's The Avengers and The Lone Ranger. Now the rumors are getting stronger that another Disney movie could be shot there...

The rumors of Lucasfilm scouts being spotted in New Mexico started almost immediately after Disney announced the acquisition of Lucasfilm.

Few months ago Albuquerque Studios president Gary Arnold, said there has been talk for two years that parts of “Star Wars” may shoot in New Mexico, his facility’s home state.

It was said that New Mexico will share production duties with Los Angeles and London when filming gets underway in 2014.

Later Latino Review reported that according to their sources: "the place where they will film in New Mexico is The City of Crosses, Las Cruces. Very little will be shot in Las Cruces along with Los Angeles and 90% will be done in London when filming gets underway in 2014."

Now the latest rumor comes from StarWarsUnderworld.  An inside source has confirmed that:
Shooting for Star Wars Episode VII will be taking place in various locations across New Mexico.  This has long been rumored but our source has confirmed to us that Disney has signed a three year deal to shoot the film in New Mexico and will be opening up a production office there in January.

I really doubt that all these rumors are coincidence, but until Lucasfilm confirms it, it's still just a rumor.

  2. So you would prefer the script and plot be fully disclosed 2 years before the films released???

    1. My thoughts exactly. So many people seem to want details of the plot and characters. That's the last thing I want, so much better to keep the element of surprise. Another reason why Disney/Lucasfilm will stay clear of EU storylines. Giving us info on casting news, filming locations etc is fine but don't give the plot away. Even a title might contain spoilers.

    2. I wish there was a way to keep ALL news from us until the film is released. Yes, I am a hypocrite being that I check for news as much as everyone else does, but I would prefer not being able to find anything out......

They owe us nothing folks. We will know when and what they want us to.

    3. I agree guys...a little location & casting info is all I really want to know about. And as far as casting goes, I just really want to know if Hamill, Fisher, Ford, Williams, Mayhew, Daniels, Baker & Lawson (among a few other supporting cast) will be back.

  3. There are lots of possibilities for a terrain such as this; lots of different planets in the Star Wars galaxy could fall under the desert/rocky catigory. What do we think this holds for the story's direction?

    1. Maybe we'll see a new part of Tatooine

    2. Yeah, I'd really enjoy seeing more of Tatooine. Or something of the likeness of.

    3. Definitley an interesting possibility. What about a planet like Altyr 5 or something new like that?
I think this confirms Abram's response to the fan-request of having the new trilogy primarily shot with a grittier, frontier theme as the OT was. Good sign!

  4. I wonder what new environments we'll see in these upcoming films. We've already seen desert planets, jungle planets, snow planets, industrial/metropolitan/municipal planets, swamp planets, forest planets/moons, grassland planets, ocean planets, volcanic planets. Wonder whats the next?

    1. A mountainous planet filled with intricate cave formations? That'd be pretty cool. Other than that, I'm not entirely sure.

    2. They're really just gonna have to rely on familiarity for these movies. The prequels were the explorational movies, if you ask me. Now it's time for them to really expand on the characters. Whoever they get to play the new roles better be good. These movies are really gonna need some good actors.

    2. If they stick to Lucas' original guidelines when developing the story, you will certainly see more of Yavin 4. That is Luke's chosen location for the new Jedi temple and as we know, the new movies are supposed to primarily focus on the establishment of the new Jedi order.

    2. Outstanding to hear... err um read I mean! We tend to be a small group of commenters and most of us are reasonable. I hope it stays that way!

On topic... There are some pretty heavily wooded areas in the mountains that look almost nothing like the stereotypical locations you tend to see in New Mexico. It'll be interesting to see what/where they plan to film.

A part of me does what the plot, characters etc to remain secret and another part of me knows I wont be able to stay away from every leak. :(

  8. My first thought here is that this will be the new location for Tatooine. Tunisia is just too much of a political crap shoot these days, and it makes sense that they'd secure a location in the southwestern United States if they were going to return to Tatooine for any reason in the sequels.

Even if it's for a completely new world, New Mexico has some fantastic terrain that would lend itself well to a SW setting. If they are indeed looking at the Las Cruces area, there are some great looking mountain ranges around there that could be used.

Get the new films off of the green-screen stage and out into some cool looking locations, and that's going to help them immensely... IMHO.

  10. for there to be a bright center of the universe and tattooine to be the furthest from it, we seem to see alot of this dustball planet. i hope they finish whatever business they have with this and be done with it, i am ready to move on with new planets.

  11. It would TOTALLY rule if episode 7 starts with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker training 2 or 3 young Jedi at the Lars home stead.

    1. Why would he choose to train them there and don't you think that'd be a bit too blunt for an introduction? It'd be completely left up to the viewer putting the pieces together themselves which is never a good idea for a film to begin. It's not even in space!
