Update! The Wednesday Tease - A New Hope Re-Release Trailer. C-3PO, Lando, Rebels, Matt Smith and More.

star wars

Today is important. We'll find out if Lucasfilm will continue to release teaser trailers about the Original Trilogy. So far they've released 6 trailers on 6 consecutive Wednesday. Last Wednesday they released a trailer for Return of the Jedi. So will they share something about A New Hope today? Stay tune to find out. Also hit the jump for more interesting stories from the last few days.

After the R2-D2 announcement from yesterday people started to wonder why they haven't confirmed Artoo's best buddy C-3PO as well. BadAssDigest even asked "Bad Robot" if there's a particular reason for it:
People seem to be ignoring the larger news this implies. Through his curious absence, it can be inferred that R2-D2's constant companion, C-3PO, will not appear. Why else confirm one robot and not the other? Bad Robot has declined to offer me details on this matter, despite my steadfast refusal to ask for any. The silence is deafening.

All this R2-D2 brouhaha started several days ago when Bad Robot tweeted a photo of J.J. Abrams with the tiny robot. Today merely marks confirmation of what many already guessed. But the double attention on one robot with no mention of the other only makes his absence that much more suspicious.
star wars

I think the explanation is simple. This time around R2-D2 won't be operated by an actor from inside. It probably will be controlled by a remote. On the other hand C-3PO if back will surely be an actor beneath the costume. And the only reason they haven't announced him yet is because they're still in the process of casting. I'm almost 90% sure that we'll see Antony Daniels back.

Some comments after Samuel L. Jackson's words that Abrams still haven't talked with Mark Hamill about the new movies:

So is it really possible that Mark Hamill was in Arndt's early treatment but for some reason was written out after Abrams and Kasdan took writing duties? Probably we'll find out after the end of the open auditions around the globe.

There is some developement to the rumor that Billy Dee Williams will do voice work for the new show Star Wars: Rebels. It all started from that tweet:

Here's the actual audio from the event (from the 40th minute):

It seems that Williams believes this is for a Netflix project, and we know that Star Wars: Rebels is not on Netflix. Obviously there's some confusion. Here are some options on that story according to SlashFilm:

1. Williams is lending his voice to Star Wars: Rebels on Disney XD.
2. Williams is lending his voice to a Netflix show not related to Star Wars.
3. Williams is joining a Netflix Star Wars based show.
4. Williams is doing a Netflix show and Star Wars Rebels.

So take your pick.

Speaking of Star Wars: Rebels, there is already a visual guide and a sticker book scheduled to be released in August 2014. Here are the details.

Prequel Trilogy stunt coordinator Nick Gillard is unlikely to return for Episode 7. That's unfortunate. The Duel of the Faiths and Obi-Wan vs. Anakin were the best lightsaber fights ever.

Stay tuned for more news from the day and hopefully another trailer later on.

And while we wait here's another interesting rumor from Bleeding Cool:
Right now this is just gossip but it comes from a fairly well-placed source. We’re hearing that Matt Smith went in for a role in Star Wars Episode VII. We don’t know if that means he had an audition, a screen test or just a chat with JJ Abrams or George Lucas, but it’s another case of fandoms colliding.
We’re still expecting Benedict Cumberbatch to be in the running for a role in the film, smashing Star Trek into Star Wars. Matt Smith would add Doctor Who to the mix. He’d be the first person to ever wield a lightsaber and a sonic screwdriver.

Good old Harry and his priceless reaction to this:

  1. Anthony Daniels has hinted several times that he will be appearing in Ep7.

So has Mark Hamill. And don't forget that Robert Englund (best mates with Hamill) recently said that he was getting into shape for the role.

And as for Nick Gillard........I just hope they are going for a less balletic fighting style with the ST.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I for one am so happy that Nick Gillard may not return. The lightsaber fights in the prequel trilogy looked ridiculous most of the time. It's not a comic-book, superhero action movie. In the prequels they were just ridiculously and endleslly hitting eachother again and again and again doing over-the-top and pointless twirls and spins. Sure It's visually very impressive, but that's not the point. It's not supposed to be nice-to-look-at ballet, they're trying to kill eachother for crying out loud. They're jedi nights, not ninjas. You're supposed to think "OH NO!! AH QUICK GET UP OFF THE FLOOR!!! QUICK DODGE HIM!!! NO WHAT WHAT WHAT!?!?! QUICK!!! YESSS!!!.... WAIT NOOOO!!!! You're not supposed to think; "gosh what a lovely cgi volcano planet, and look at the speed that this fight is going.."

    1. I agree 100%. The "opera" side of Star Wars was definitley amplified in the prequels way too much to the point where you didn't even feel like you were watching a battle anymore, and it wasn't too convincing that they're at each others throats when it looks like they're just dancing around to John Williams...

      Delete
    2. Exactly. People say the duel of the fates was the best fight. It's the worst fight by a clear mile. It's like interpretive dance but with lightsabers. And I love John Williams, but that music with the opera choir, sorry but it's all just ridiculous, it sounds like a song you would hear when you are greeted to hell. Not a song you hear in a lightsaber sight. It's all very cool and a technical masterpiece, but at the end of the day, it's way over the top and not in the true spirit of star wars. If we have to endure anymore 10 minute mind-numbing over-choreographed fights with church music in the background, I'm just going to burry my head in my popcorn I think.

      Delete
    3. Not to pile on but totally agree. Luke waling on Vader's lightsaber had much more impact IMO than any prequel fight. I don't mind flourishes if it looks like they are actually trying to kill one another instead of spin for the sake of spinning.

      Delete
    4. In the Ep 1 making of you can hear Lucas saying to Williams: "I want a religious atmosphere in this fight". So, whatever you think about that, they have both realize the point. I love that fight - and that music. I think it's the only thing I would never change in The phantom Menace.

      Delete
    5. I enjoyed the duels more in the prequels to be frank. The choreography was excellent. Force users have so advanced reflexes that can almost preceive the future (quoting Qui Gon talking about Anakin "he can see into the future that's why he appears to have such quick reflexes- it's a Jedi trait") thus the moves of the opponent before he/she even makes them.

The "unencessary" spins are strategic moves to throw the opponent's guard against a surprise attack that will throw off the opponent's reflexes. In short the moves are not overcomplicated for nothing.

The OT duels were epic, not strategic- Lucas said so himself- when he was making the prequels he wanted to make sure we knew how a real Jedi did it back in the day.

In short, it's unfair to compare the duels of the two trilogies as there are all well placed withtin the information Lucas had given the fans about how force users do battle at that given time.

      Delete
    6. "The "unencessary" spins are strategic moves to throw the opponent's guard against a surprise attack that will throw off the opponent's reflexes." I get all that, you can make all the excuses in the world. But a real fight with humanity was missing from the prequels, in exchange of action and visuals. I just really don't want star wars to go to that brain-dead its-all-about-the-visuals action. I am not impressed with style over substance.

      Delete
    7. Then you should make the movies.. We get it, you hate the prequels... Stop trying to speak for others who liked both trilogies... And yes, I grew up watching Star Wars when it first came out and have been a fan since... Totally disagree with your assessment... Respect it already and move on...

      Delete
  3. Thank God, Nick Gillard won't be back. The TPM duels were great because Ray Park knew what we was doing, AOTC was completely forgettable, and ROTS was seriously lame (especially when compared with some of the amazing things that fans have been coming up with).
If they hire anybody back, I hope it's Ray Park as their swordmaster.

  4. The blog proclaiming that 3PO won't be back because he hasn't officially been mentioned yet is such an overreaction. Sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Where exactly the blog proclaimed that C-3PO won't be back? On the contrary, I quoted BadAssDigest and later added that I'm 90% sure that Daniels will be back, and explained why. Read it again if you have to.

      Delete
    2. No, that's who I was referring to. In the excerpt they keep repeating in different ways that his absence must mean 3PO won't be in the film. It's a knee-jerk reaction, and you're right to think otherwise.

      Delete
  5. I agree.......same goes for Hamill & co. as well.

    ReplyDelete
  6. My guess is that Anthony Daniels will be confirmed around the time if not the same time the main actors will be announced and confirmed simply because C3PO is an actor character and a BIG one (in my opinion belongs in the original cast category such as the big three). R2 doesn't HAVE to be an actor (although I would love for Baker to return) which could be the reason why they confirmed R2's return, they wouldn't have to use an actor especially while auditions are taking place.

  7. It just goes to show this is all part of JJ's "Mystery Box" style. And revealing pictures could cause too many assumptions as to character direction and paths the plot could take. If JJ wants to play with a reveal of a character or its form i.e. episode one C3PO, then it it less effective to the audience's reaction. Embrace the unknown, you will be more enthused and entertained. That is what JJ is after. As for Nick, I'm glad we will have someone new. The new Jedi I would think would have a different influence such as Luke, but they will all be unique individuals I'm sure. I just hope Luke's action developed differently like Hamil had wanted, one handed grip verses two handed.

  8. I doubt anything "big" is going to be announced

    1. To be completely honest, no one cares about "doubts" that aren't backed up with clear evidence. You have no reason to not keep an open, positive mindset besides your obvious nature of being a pessimistic asshole. No point in bringing everyone else down to your level.

    2. Jesus, man. Im just stating my opinion. They haven't announced anything "big" in the past Wednesdays. So I don't think they ever will.

    3. I don't see it on YT or FB... Maybe they took it down?? But any rate, if that's true, then expect to see all the trailers for the Extended Edition, then the theater re-release when they came out (unless that's what you're talking about), then the trailers for the DVD version, then Blu-Ray... so we're looking at about 3 more months of these OT trailers... and then maybe they'll start with the prequel trilogy ;)

    4. ugh, what are they even releasing these trailers for haha. No offense lucasfilm but I've watched these films about 300 times, I don't need to see old trailers for them. How about a teeny bit more information about the films I haven't seen.. *cough cough* .. episode vii .. hint hint

    1. ...are you joking?? No way! This isn't a brand new set of films, like episode 1, 2, and 3. This is star wars episode 7 8 and 9, old characters NEED to come back for the continuing story. Haven't you heard of continuity?? Imagine if they made a new harry potter film, but harry potter, ron and hermoine didn't actually come back. How stupid would that be. Do you really want 6 films to establish a group of characters and story, then they just randomly have another 3 films of something that has nothing to do with anything that's been set up??. It can't be "100% new" at all. At most it should be 70% new, like a villian, and as it's set 30 years later, a new generation of characters. Then Han and Leia could be the parents, and generals or something, Luke can take the role of Yoda/old-ben, etc etc etc

    2. Booooring. Why should a new Star Wars movie involve old characters when there are dozen upon dozens of books telling a similar story to yours? Star Wars ended with EP 6 with Luke bringing balance to the force and turning his father away from the dark side.

Luke becomes a Jedi Master leading a new group of Jedi's...heard that.
Luke marries and has kids...heard that.
      Leigha becomes a Jedi...heard that.

EP 7 needs to go all out with re-establishing evil in the Star Wars universe, which should take place long after EP 6. Like creating a story line around a whole society of Sith's that begin to spread across the galaxy using new aspects of the Force. Or perhaps an evil more powerful than a Sith.

      Delete
    3. "Booooring." ... What a brilliant argument you put across... I don't care if you think it's boring. If you think it's boring, then stop whining because you're obviously not a fan, (and to quote carrie fisher) "in which case, why are you even here?".
"Why should a new Star Wars movie involve old characters" ..didn't you read what I just put? Haven't you heard of CONTINUITY?? Just because something is being continued, doesn't mean it has to rewrite history and ignore what's been established, it means it has to develop what's already there and expand it.
"EP 7 needs to go all out with re-establishing evil in the Star Wars universe, which should take place long after EP 6." ...ok, so what's your point? why does that mean old characters shouldn't be back then??..
Am I talking to a troll?? a monkey? Is this that 'Darth Malgus' idiot again??

    4. "...are you joking?? "
I agree with you whole-heartedly. These movies are meant to carry on the legacy of the Skywalkers as the first two trilogies did.

    5. Thank you dopeyjoe, you're one of the the only people here I actually agree with in your comments. It's truly worrying what some people want or don't want to see in these new films..

      Delete
    6. No need to worry, my friend. Abrams has assured us that this new trilogy will be a continuation of the Skywalker legacy and luckily, these bozos have no say in what is and isn't included. We're all just fans here, filled with hopes and dreams of what this movie could be and so far, weve gotten nothing but news that's pointing in a great direction. I feel these movies will be everything we've hoped for in episodes 7-9 and more.

    8. Thank you, sir. Just another Star Wars fan with too much retained knowledge and hope built up from over the years for these movies to be great and I expect nothing less. It'd take something truly terrible (darth malgus's suggestions for example) to bring these movies down.

    9. I hope the Skywalker "Legacy" is brief in EP 7. I look forward to a fresh storyline.

      Delete
    10. Looking at how old the original characters are getting, their inclusion will most likely be brief, but the Skywalker name will carry on throughout the new movies no matter what. That doesn't mean a new plot cannot be tied in with their Legacy. What'd you expect?

  11. So, we have the re-rerelease trailers to look forward to over the next couple of weeks. Re-rerelease trailers. Is anyone else getting bored with this particular form of viral marketing? I'm going to check to see if there are any re-re-rerelease trailers knocking around. I'm really looking forward to seeing them.

  12. Hm... Oddly enough, I could see Matt Smith in a Star Wars film. Maybe not with a lightsaber, but as a politician of the new republic, or something along those lines. His face is too established in the world of Doctor Who to play a leading role in E7.

  15. Episodes 1-6 was about the rise and fall of Anakin, as he fulfilled his destiny to bring balance to the force by destroying the Sith. Therefore, there can be no new Sith in the new trilogy. Otherwise it ruins the story line for 1-6.

Episode 7: A New Jedi Order. Luke was the last of the Jedi and after EP6 there was peace. No threat of evil. He felt it was his destiny to find the true origin and nature of the force; to fully understand it. He has been gone for 30 years and his whereabouts are unknown, even to Hans and Leigha (who have a son and daughter).

A new threat begins to present itself, albeit along the same lines of evil as the Sith. To make the movie relevant to today's society I think the new threat should be in the form of terrorist groups from outside the influence of the Republic (high tech version of storm troopers with jet packs and nuclear blasters?). These terrorist groups are led by a very powerful Tyrant who was taught the ways of the dark side from Palpatine prior to EP1. (Quick flashback of training). The terrorist groups attack nearly all planets and moons of the Republic with ease as there are no Jedi to stop them. There really are no military forces because peace was thought to rein for a thousand years. During these attacks Hans, Leigha, and their son are killed one-by-one at the hands of the terrorists.

Although not considered a Sith, the Tyrant sneaks his way through the Republic during the attacks. He’s collecting the secret holocrons of both the Jedi and Sith which were spread throughout the Republic by Palpatine (Anakin told Palpatine where the Jedi holocrons were hidden shortly after he turned into Vader, in hopes to save Padame). (Quick flashback). Palpatine desperately wanted to live forever which meant that the dark side of the force always needed to be practiced. So his backup plan was to send a droid to find the Tyrant and tell him where the holocrons were hidden (between EP5 & 6). This would give the Tyrant much more power and knowledge.

The Republic is in disarray. R2D2 tells C3PO that he knows where Luke has been the past 30 years. (Luke instructed R2D2 to only tell of his whereabouts if it was an emergency). They’re on their way to leave in search of Luke when they stumble across Han’s and Leigha’s daughter running from a small group of terrorists. They’re beating her up pretty badly and plan to capture and torture her. R2D2 opens up a little compartment and blasts out a green light saber to the daughter. This is the first she’s ever seen or used a light saber, but she absolutely demolishes the terrorist group with it (12-15 killed). C3P0 approaches her after the scuffle, looks at the light saber and says, “By Golly, this is Master Luke’s”.

Off they go to find Luke in the millennium falcon with Chewy. They reach moon where Luke is supposedly at. As they exit the falcon Chewy is struck from behind by the Tyrant!!! The daughter, R2D2, and C3PO run off into the swamp and get separated. After striking down Chewy the Tyrant chases after the daughter. He catches up to her and she whips out her light saber in defense. They both stop. There’s a pause. Then the Tyrant pulls out two red light saber whips. She’s no match and the Tyrant quickly knocks away her light saber. He picks it up, laughs with a demonic tone, and takes a big swing to kill her. Just before he’s about to land the killing blow a white light saber impedes and shatters the green light saber. It’s Luke!!!

An epic battle ensues between the Tyrant and Luke. The Tyrant puts up a formidable fight, but in the end Luke uses a force wind by blowing on the open palm of his hand, which slowly begins to disintegrate the Tyrant in a matter of 7-8 seconds. Everyone is ok, including Chewy.

The movie ends with Luke finding out the fate of Hans, Leigha, and their son. They return to one of the planets not yet affected by the terrorist groups where Luke and the daughter begin to build up a new Jedi Order with several recruits. The end.

That's a very long post, my friend. I am trying my hardest to understand it. So you say there can not be anymore sith in Star Wars because vader killed palpatine. So you want space terrorists instead? That just doesn't sound like Star Wars, my friend. It just sounds too boring... I understand adding more sith would ruin the storyline of ep 1 - 6, you say. But I don't see any other way of doing it. Star Wars is about good vs evil, correct? Then the ultimate evil should be the sith. Personally, I don't care about the Prophecy or whatever they called in the prequels.

  19. Lets be honest guys, if the prequels--in the era of jedi-- had fights the likes of old, humanoid Vader, old crippled Kenobi, and young, hardly trained Luke, people would have literally flipped their shit. They would have said "THIS is the best you could do? After 30 years the fights are the same?" I'll admit the original trilogies fights were much grittier, an emotional duel of father and son really, especially ROTJ (my favorite duel) when Luke was just overpowering Vader as he's smacking his saber away and cuts off his hand. But the way movies are made today it has to be over the top, and you'd be hardpressed to find a choreographed sword fight in any movie over the past 20 years that's better than Phantom's. And with the actors doing it all themselves?! Come on, you've got Schindler going against Maul what more could you want! Oh, and props to Harrison Ford, I'd tell that voodoo man to get out my house as well. hah
