On Which Character the First Star Wars Spin-Off Movie Should be Based?

  1. Obviously the important thing is doing it right but I pretended like I had to choose one of the listed characters. I know a lot of people will vote for Boba Fett and character-wise he is my favorite. The problem is that I like him better with a certain level of mystique and I feel like an origin story would be a mistake. If I felt confident that they would do a story about him later in life I'd be all for it but I know those darn origin stories are all the rage. Ditto for Han Solo, plus no one could live up to Harrison Ford anyway. Therefore I voted for Obi-Wan Kenobi as we have an age appropriate actor to play him and his backstory has been larely unexplored.

  2. This might sound silly, but I'd like to know what everyone thinks. How about Grand Moff Tarkin? It would be a story about the Empire coming to rule the galaxy by fear. The Generals, Moffs? and the like balancing their own hierarchical structure with the 'forces' of the Dark Lord agents. How did Vader EVER take orders from anyone else besides the Emperor? That's what I always wanted to know.

    1. Personally I'd love to read/watch a well done Tarkin story. In terms of a major motion picture though he's a supporting character at best.

    2. hey , thought i would just say that if you read the SW novel, Obi Wan briefly mentions to Luke that Vader served the Emperor and others like him, helping cement their rise to power. The Inquisitor may be one of those guys...-prymal

    3. I was thinking the same thing, Prymal. It's also been said that Rebels may include characters, concepts and plot points based on certain events from the novels. I'd say it'd make much more sense for them to base material on the SW novel written by Lucas.

  3. I've always been interested in seeing Count Dooku and Qui-gon's backstory. Then it could involve Palpatine luring Dooku to the dark side. Obi-wan becoming Qui-gon's apprentice. Maybe it could feature a scene or two with Mace Windu, Yoda, Ki-Adi-Mundi. They got amazing actors to play these parts, Christopher Lee, Liam Neeson, Ewan mcgregor, Samuel L Jackson, and I'd love to see them with a much more meatier story, dialogue, and direction than what they were given in the prequals.

  4. Truth is, having read the comics, I would prefer a spin-off movie about Jango Fett instead of Boba.
A Yoda movie would be a terrible mistake, it's best to keep Yoda's origins a mystery.
Why don't they just make a movie about the old republic, with Revan-Malak and all those great characters we've only seen in games and read about in comics-books?

    1. KOTOR would probably be the best choice but they won't do it (at least for a while) because its a tougher sell to the general public due to a lack of throughly established mainstream characters.

  5. It may be a good idea to have one single theme connacting the spin-offs. Imagine if they followed Boba Fett, with each movie focused on a different bounty mission.

  6. For all we know, there may be a very interesting new character introduced in Episode 7 that they plan on doing a spin off of. Possibly a backstory of the new villian introduced in Episode 7?

  7. Whatever they do, I would love to see Vader play a massive role as the bad guy again. He for me IS Star Wars! Who's with me on this?

    1. No. Certainly not for "whatever they do". If a spinoff is about plapatine or grand moff tarkin or something, then fair enough. But they certainly can't have vader in it just because he's an iconic character to star wars. He needs to have a role.

    2. i wouldn´t mind a Vader/Palpatine/Moff Tarkin movie, Vader hunting down jedi & Tarkin rising to Grand Moff (maybe that´s why he is able to give orders to Vader) Vader being off hunting jedi while Tarkin rises to Palpatines "general" & controlling the Empire for Palpatine

    3. That might be interesting if say, they remade episode 4-6 from the perspective of Rogue Squadron.

    4. Star Wars is entirely based on the saga of Anakin Skywalker's fall to the darkside, becoming Darth Vader towards the end of his life, then realizing when his son is being tortured before his eyes, that his love for his family is stronger than his will to conquer the galaxy by the hand of the emperor. Why would they have to make a spinoff movie about Vader if the entire saga is completely based around his character?

      This isn't Lion King 1 1/2

  8. You have to add Vader spin off... who would not love to see the happenings of Vader after E-III? The establishment of the empire, the formation of the rebellion, Vader hunting down and killing Jedi, etc. That could be an awesome film.

I love also a young Solo, meeting Chewie, smuggling, kessel run, etc. I just think there is so much to go on. Hard to find a good young solo as good as Harrison Ford but man it would be awesome if they can pull that off.

Fett is of course a great idea... I'm nervous about it though because it may ruin the mystique of who Boba is. Have to be very careful with the story and revealing too much.

No young Yoda, I'm kind of done with CGI Yoda. Rather see more Obi-Wan for sure so Yoda can be a part of that potential side story but being based solely on Yoda may be a bit too much and will be totally CGI... No thanks

It's called Star Wars: Rebels, the TV series. Being released this summer.

  9. Instead of a spinoff movie, why don't they just finally do SW underworld? wasn't that supposed to focus on these minor characters?

If they do spinoffs, do it about the old republic era. there's way to low focus on that movie-wise.

  10. Since Jabba is essentially an intergalactic gangster ala Al Capone, I wouldn't mind a Star Wars version of Goodfellas or Godfather focusing on Jabba's crime syndicate.

Other than that, I'm honestly not very interested in any spin off films focusing on existing characters. I think the spin off films could potentially offer a way to create new characters and explore different facets of the galaxy.

I mean, they could complete redo Episode 4-6 entirely from the perspective of Rogue Squadron if they wanted to.

Why do a spin off of a main character that's already been fleshed out like Han Solo? Do we really need to actually see him rolling the dice, dumping a shipment of spice, or making the Kessel Run? I don't think we need to turn every line of dialogue into an epic 2 hour movie.

  11. How about a spinoff movie about Wedge Antilles? Or something to do with Rogue Squadron? I'm sure a movie based all around the space battles and squads could work very nicely... then again I would like to see an Obi-Wan spinoff, maybe even Qui-Gon w/ Obi-Wan b4 Episode 1...

    1. I'd love to watch either of those. The problem is that Disney is opting for a BIG character origin-story based approach for the non-Episode movies so it basically disquallifies most interesting ideas. To the general public even characters like Qui-Gon don't fit the bill of a BIG character. Out of your ideas I think Obi-Wan is your only hope, and that might even be pushing it (I think you'd see Yoda first as he's more marketable, probably right after Fett).

    2. I know I'm the only one around here who thinks Mon Mothma was an incredibly important character, but I'd love to see a spinoff movie of her and how she helped start the rebellion.

  12. As much as we all dig Boba Fett, I really don't see how he can possibly be portrayed as sympathetic enough to be able to carry the lead in a two-hour movie.

In fact, I'm really not sold on the whole spin-off movie concept at this point. Unless they come up with some really cool characters in the sequel films and do spin-offs based on them, what are we going to see? Some kid playing Han or Lando? Obi Wan and a Jawa sitting at the edge of the Dune Sea playing "I Spy With My Little Eye"? Yoda and the Jedi Council trying to agree on what to order on their pizza?

I know Disney is a money machine and they want to leverage the fan appeal every last popular Star Wars character, but I just don't see how telling origin stories about iconic movie characters from 30 or 40 years ago is going to work. Harrison Ford IS Han Solo. Carrie Fisher IS Princess Leia. If you just cast young actors in these roles the project is likely to fall flat unless you manage to cast EXACTLY the right person in the role.

Anyone playing a young Han Solo, for instance, would have to be at least as good at mimicking Harrison Ford as River Phoenix was. IMHO, that's really about where the bar is set. Less than that, and it'll end up just being some kid in a black vest saying Solo-ish lines.

I dunno... I've got a bad feeling about this.

    1. UNLESS...

Unless they do origin movies with photo-realistic CGI (as opposed to the cartoonish CGI from the Clone Wars cartoons) and get the original actors to do the voices. That could work. The characters could be made to look like young versions of the actors they're based on, the voice-overs could be tweaked to make them sound younger.

And no, I don't mean like the god-awful attempt to CGI a "young" Jeff Bridges into a live action movie for Tron 2. The whole movie would need to be CGI to make the characters look right.

But maybe that would be a possible way to go with it.

(Just thinking out loud here, mostly.)

  13. i would be excited to see a Fett movie BUT I don't think it makes the most sense. Fett only draws people who are already starwars fans, and you want the movie to broaden your fan base.

Also, if your Disney, you want to start the spin-offs with a good guy. I cant explain why, maybe someone else can, but it makes sense that you would.

So that leaves 2 choices. Obi Wan and Han Solo. Han's movie could easily have Jabba, Greedo and the empire as big cool villains. And I'm pretty sure his character is the most compelling to those semi-interested fans.

Obi Wan could help bridge the huge gap there is between 1,2,3 and 4,5,6. The 2 trilogies are so different, they need something to make them seem more unified. An Obi-Wan movie could do that easy. He's really the only one who could.

"Help us Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope!"
    - Disney

That being said, Solo movie would be my choice.

    1. I know exactly what you mean about featuring a hero rather than a villain in the first spin-off.

It's basically like I mentioned above - it would be difficult to get an audience to sympathize with a villain like Boba Fett enough for him to work as the protagonist for a feature-length movie. He isn't like Tony Soprano or Henry Hill or even Léon in The Professional. Because in the end, Fett is the bad guy who hauls Han Solo back to Jabba as a paperweight. He can be made to do cool stuff onscreen, but he cannot be made to be the "hero" of his own movie. It just isn't going to work that way.

And two hours of Fett just zipping around on his jetpack and doing cool-looking stuff isn't going to work as a movie.

I agree - gotta go with a hero if they're going to do backstories as feature-length films.

  14. I voted for Boba fett. It doesn't have to be origin story, could just be one of his "adventures". Actually I would prefer that. I think the first stand alone movie will be Boba fett
Hoping for an obi wan mcgregor movie, more than fett, but think chances are slim. Hope I'm wrong.
Also, George Lucas says Yoda is a supporting character and the stand alone movies will revolve around main characters only. So no Yoda movie. Which leads me to ask who are main characters and who are supporting?

  15. personally i think that it would be good for a ig88 or a yoda movie purely because, there has already been so much more written about Solo, Fett, Obi wan and even Palpatine. they all have extensive back stories and to please the fans they would have to accurate to the expanded universe (cause come on, we know how picky we fans can be). Yoda, we know a little about but what happened in his passed? there has got to a whole movies worth of fresh ideas that could be made into something pretty epic. IG-88 would be interesting as a whole bunch main characters interweave with his story.

  16. There's an article circulating that one of the spinoff movies will have Jar Jar/Gungans (representing the PT) fighting the Ewoks (representing the OT) and they battle it out for title of Lamest Star Wars Saga Character.

  21. Mace Windu would be nice, but we all know it's going to be an OT character, because Disney is catering to the OT fanatics, and dissing everybody else who liked Clone Wars/Prequels/EU.

    1. I vote NO to the Obi Wan Kenobi movie. With the prequels and Clone Wars, what part of this guy's life HAVEN'T we seen? Sure, Disney could film a movie about Crazy Old Ben living amongst the rocks for 15 years talking to Qui Gon's ghost, but most would not find that riveting. (Don't get me wrong, I'd watch it!)

    2. Those fans have gotten so much new stuff over the years since the OT was released. OT fans have gotten nothing but EU books, comics and video games. Quit complaining, dingus.
