Greg Weisman Talks Star Wars Rebels' Story, Characters, Canon and More.

star wars

Star Wars: Rebels executive producer Greg Weisman talked with IGN about the upcoming TV series, discussing the new Star Wars canon, the story and tone of the show, the core characters and more...

On the crew.

Weisman said, of his experience on Rebels, “Most of it's just been fantastic. I've got a couple of tremendous producing partners in Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni -- two incredibly great guys that are really wonderful to work with. Then, just from a personality standpoint, there's no doubt of the three of us, I'm the crankiest. I'm the curmudgeon of the three of us. But they are just joys to work with, so incredibly talented. Then we've got -- I'm not allowed to say who -- a terrific writing staff on this show. We've got a phenomenal cast on this show -- I'm also not allowed to say who! -- but I know the names are going to be revealed very soon, just not yet.”

rebels

On the Star Wars Canon.

“I think we've got this great setting for these stories, between Episode III and Episode IV of the movies,” Weisman continued. “That's a wonderful world to be playing in. It's so rich -- and I don't pretend to be an expert in it. I've seen the movies, and I've seen most, not even all, of The Clone Wars episodes yet. I've been watching them in my free time, but I don't have a lot of that right now. But there are guys like Leland Chee and Pablo Hidalgo who are working with Lucasfilm. Pablo in particular has been on the story team from the beginning, and aside from being really smart and good at story, Pablo is also like a breathing, walking, talking Wookieepedia. There are moments you can watch as Dave actually tries to stump Pablo with something, but it's very, very difficult to do. So what that means is that, even when my knowledge falls short, I've got someone to go to to say, ‘Okay, I want to do something like this. What can we use from the canon to fit this story?’ So it always helps to have these guys who truly have learned to live and breath this stuff.”

Describing the approach to Rebels and the widespread potential audience, Weisman said, “We're all very dedicated, and we know this show is going to be canon, so we take that responsibility very seriously. We know that on the one hand there's an audience who's going to be watching this that knows everything there is to know about Lucasfilm canon and knows beyond that tons of stuff from the Expanded Universe, which may or may not turn out to be canon once Lucasfilm decides what is official and what's not. So we want the show to work for that group, the most extreme fanboys out there. At the same time, we also have the responsibility that for a certain generation of kids, this is going to be their first exposure to Star Wars. By the time this comes out next fall, their kids were young enough that they won't have seen Clone Wars. Forget the movies, they won't have seen Clone Wars! So this will be the first Star Wars thing they're seeing, and we take that responsibility very seriously as well.”

rebels

On the story and the tone of the show.

As for the tone, Weisman explained, “The tone of this show is very much in the vein of Episodes IV and V -- that is, there's some serious stuff going on; that doesn't mean we can't have humor, that doesn't mean we can't have romance, and that doesn't mean we can't have anything, frankly. We just also take the jeopardy very seriously, but we think we've got a great ensemble of characters to work with here in a world that starts on the planet Lothal and will continue to expand, assuming -- I mean, it even expands in Season 1 -- but assuming we get a pickup for multiple seasons, we'll continue to expand it, because this series really is about the founding of the Rebel Alliance. It doesn't exist when we come in.”

Weisman also noted that Rebels has a bit of a ticking clock element to its storyline. “Most of the series I've worked on are very much open-ended. There is no end to Gargoyles, there's no end to Young Justice. Those shows may not get picked up, and I don't own these properties, so I may have to stop working on them at various points. But there actually is an endgame to Star Wars Rebels, because this is about a finite period of time between Episodes III and IV. It starts about 14 and a half years after the end of Episode III and about four or five years before Episode IV. This is about how the Rebel Alliance came to be. So once the Rebel Alliance is, that's pretty much where the show ends. I don't know how many seasons that is. It's not like we've nailed that down like, ‘Oh, we're going to exactly X amount of seasons.’ But if all goes well, that's the goal: we go from the origins of the Rebel Alliance to the point where the Rebel Alliance is, which would lead in essence directly into A New Hope. That's the goal, to fill in that gap between those four or five years.”

rebels

On the main characters.

Unlike The Clone Wars, which moved around the galaxy a lot and also would switch focus between a lot of different character groupings, Rebels is taking a different approach. Explained Weisman, “We have a character who's our focus character, and then five other characters that make up this group of six rebels. Even within the first season, that cast expands, and there are more people, but the focus is still on this small group of rebels who are basically gadflies from the standpoint of the Empire they're fighting. The amount of damage that six individuals can do is probably pretty limited. But as they begin to build alliances and find allies and expand, the show gets bigger and bigger in scope. Again, that's true even in the first season, but even the first season is just the beginning. It's not like by the end of the first season the Rebel Alliance exists. I'd call that a spoiler, except I think it should be obvious. It's not like we get to the end of the first season and suddenly there's the Rebel Alliance. It's going to take us awhile to build that organization that was able to destroy the Death Star in cooperation and go to Hoth and all that stuff. So we've got a ways to go, for sure, but our show's still going to focus on these six core characters I would think throughout the whole thing, even as the scope increases in size, which it will, gradually."

    2. Yeah, I think they tried to copy Han, and failed miserably. Han looks like a normal person. This Kanan person has a ponytail. Who has a ponytail? And who has a ponytail in star wars?..

    3. Padawans have small ponytails. I think the idea is that Kanan was a padawan who survived Order 66. So, it's a nice little visual link.

    4. No padawans have little braids, they don't sport ponytails..

    5. No. They have both.

    6. Well, if he's trying to hide the fact that he is a Jedi, wouldn't he cut the braid/ponytail?

    7. Totally agree with anon. If I saw someone in real life with a pony tail, a goatee, what amounts to a turtle neck and (not to mention armor on one arm) I would be like that guy dresses like a douchebag. then if I saw someone from dinsey draw said person I would wonder what the hell they are doing making him "pretty much the coolest person in the galaxy" lets have freddy prince jr voice him.

I already hate that they call him a cowboy jedi. Kind of a contradiction but maybe that could be a good thing.

I can't wait for the disney songs though!

    8. Lol, oh please, you can't say padawans 'had both' because of some acceptation that obi-wan happened to have a little one too. Anyway, since when is he a padawan in the first place? Who is his master? They described him as a rogue-ish rebellion cowboy type.

    9. To illiterate my point, I watched the video again-
"He's a young man that's adrift. He has no structure"
"He is a Jedi. But he's not a Jedi of the traditional sense that we've had before."
"He's a little bit more relaxed than the strict jedi rules"
"He hasn't acted as a Jedi"
      "He's forsaken the jedi ways"
"He's a little more rough around the edge"
Then why on earth would they give him a ponytail!? Well actually, they then stupidly said the ponytail "harkens back to, you know, samurai".
So he's some pirate samurai? Sorry but this show is just getting harder and harder to take seriously based on the characters we've seen so far.

And so did Anakin, as a padawan. I'm sure there are other examples. Hence, padawans had both. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.

I'm excited about the show but this is the first thing i don't like it.
I would prefer the other way: 4-5 years after EIII because of the "Jedi thing". In EIV Jedis are almost a legend.

So are we going to see anything of Princess Leia? And will she be voiced by Carrie?

    1. That's a very good point/question. I don't believe she whould appear, though, until the very end of the run, just before the events of Episode IV. In the radio drama for EIV, I believe it makes it out like she joined just a short while before rushing the plans for the Death Star to Tatooine. It's been a little while since I heard the drama, though.

      Delete
    2. She wasn't originally rushing the plans to Tatooine, that was an unexpected occurance. It was an act of desperation that she recorded the message to Obi-Wan last minute before being captured by the empire.
I don't see why Leia wouldn't be in the later episodes and I'm sure Carrie would love to voice the role.

      Delete
    3. Wasn't she going there to get in contact with Ben, though?

      Delete
    4. She was going to Ben Kenobi by herself, to take her to Alderaan, by the request of her father. But then the ship got caught by the empire. When Leia found out the empire was looking for stolen plans she put the plans into R2, and then gave him a message. "I regret that I am unable to present my fathers request to you in person but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed"
Personally I would love to see more of this kind of stuff. I want to see Leia's, Vaders, Grand moff tarkin's antics on screen.

      Delete
    5. You're right! Thank you for correcting that misinterpretation of mine.

      Delete
    6. If a very young Leia appears later on in the show, then Carrie Fisher will proably not voice her, because her voice has changed with age, they would probably find someone young with a youthful voice. Carrie doesn´´t sound like young Leia anymore, but hopefully her mature voice will work well as a new republic leader

  4. Yes, the character does look like a Disney character. The picture on the left most bottom of the pencil drawings scares me the most! All though, the one on the bottom right most is scary, too. Although, I'm willing to give it a chance.

I know a lot of people are posting about how there's not supposed to be any other Jedi in the galaxy. Well, I feel that way, too. However, it realms of possiblilty, I do think it is possible. I know Yoda and Ben talked about how Luke and Leia were the only "Jedi" left. Well, Yoda didn't feel the presence of Sidious, even though they were on the same planet! It makes it look like Yoda doesn't really know everything. He's not a god, or anything. Also, when he says Jedi, he could be referring to the organization/title. This guy could be someone who has slipped through the cracks. They are saying he hides his force abilities as much as he can and weilds a blaster instead of a lightsaber most of the time. Who knows, this character may go ino seclusion before EIV only to return as and old man in EVII. I'm just guessing, though. I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing. I don't know. It sounds kinda cheesy but also sounds like it could be a big set up for EVII. Just my thoughts as I return to work from a few snow days.

    1. I can just about handle a few Jedi. But they shouldn't be a main character in a show about the rebels. Plus the villain should be darth vader.

      Delete
    2. Agree as well.I thought Lord Vader hunted down what was left of the Jedi? Sith 33

      Delete
    3. Yoda could very well be referring to the title "jedi" since there are many forcesensitive species/persons in the galaxy, most of them using the force naturally & not thinking about it. But that doesn´t make them Jedi or a threat.

The other character "Ezra" who Kanan becomes a mentor to is using the force without knowing it, in difficult situations. If you can call the force "someone supersensitive/intutive" then a lot of people/species in the galaxy use it unknowingly like Ezra.

At one point Lucas said: "the force is like yoga or karate, anyone can learn how to use it, but some have better natural ability & prerequisities for it"
& isn´t that how the Jedi order started? A group of force sensitives who decided to learn all it´s mysteries.

If Kanan trained as a jedi but doesn´t use it anymore, it´s like someone stopped training karate or yoga, you would always know the basics, but you loose the finetuned movements etc. that only come with constant training. (Obi Wan didn´t just sit on his ass, rolling his thumbs for 20 years on Tattoine)

PS. I like the name "Cowboy Jedi" star wars is back on the frontier :)

  5. There's no way the marketing pukes at Disney are ever going to let a Star Wars film or TV series come out without a Jedi main character backflipping his way through the thing.

However, in the case of Rebels, I think they really needed to make an exception. A tiny band of rebels led by a saber-wielding Jedi. Talk about immediately bringing the heat down on you. That's about like sparking up a doob right in front of a cop (unless you're in Colorado or Washington, Jeebus love 'em.)

Would it have killed them to keep Rebels as more of an old-school blasters-and-starships sort of scenario? Yes, I know it can always be justified one way or t'other to have a Jedi, but it seems like that continues to reduce Star Wars to a story that's only about superhero Jedi, and not so much about regular people doing heroic things, as it originally started out to be. I kinda miss that.

    2. "Would it have killed them to keep Rebels as more of an old-school blasters-and-starships sort of scenario?"
This is exactly what I was hoping for from this series. I'm disappointed, but not surprised that they chose to squeeze in another Jedi character that really doesn't belong, instead of bringing us something that we haven't seen in years. Lightsabers are cool, but they're an easy viewer-hook for the child demographic. It's just not creative anymore. If they had focused more on a rural, gritty side of Star Wars that's been abandoned since the A New Hope, I'd be much more excited for this series, but from what we've been shown so far, it just looks like they're doing to the OT with rebels what THW did to the PT.

    5. @dopeyjoe -But if they keep him as a "normal" blaster cowboy HanSolo-type for many episodes, having his lightsaber tucked away hidden & also hiding his abilities, that could be intrigueing. Knowing his a jedi & also not a jedi. Or maybe more correctly: used to be a jedi

Maybe he hides it & tries to forget his past, but then is forced to use the force when things heat up, then he would start out not a jedi & end up something close to a jedi. When someone is forced to fight a difficult battle you just don´t ignore some of your abilities if it is a life or death situation.

If he starts out like Aragorn in LOTR: a Strider type that gradually takes on more responsability, then it could really work. The character/concept of someone being more than he/she appears to be is always interesting & a central part of many movies. Aragorn also hides his sword, using a normal sword in the beginning. In Kanan´ s case: a good old blaster :)

  7. There were thousands of Jedi. I find it hard to believe the Empire could have "exterminated" all of them in 14 years. Theres bound to be a good amount left. Something big must have happened just before A New Hope to make Luke, Leia, Yoda & Obi-Wan the last of them.

    1. Yes, that would be called Order 66, where we saw in episode 3 Jedi all over the galaxy being brutally slaughtered to extinction. The fact that all of the Jedi were mrudered in 14 years is not far fetched in the least. 14 years is quite a long time for an enormous force such as the empire to kill off a huge majority of the Jedi, leaving only Ben Kenobi and Yoda on planets where contact with the outside galaxy (or any civilization for that matter) is very rare, and Luke who didn't even know he was a Jedi in the first place. That is what I call hiding. I can see Lothal being a planet like Tattooine, full of scum and villainy, so it'd be an ideal place to hide out, but it's just unnecessary to have him in the series; a poorly used method of drawing a child demographic. That is why I agree with DEKKA129 that Disney will probably never release Star Wars conent without lightsabers, because I guess that's become the reason why people watch Star Wars these days.

      Delete
    2. I'm also not sure if "thousands" is an accurate estimation either.

      Delete
    3. I know what Order 66 is. And yes, during the end of the Republic there were still thousands of Jedi.

    4. Didn't take the Nazi's long to kill over 6 million people during WWII, and they didn't even have blasters or star destroyers! I know that's a bit irrelevent, but my point is; it's really not far fetched for the Jedi to be forced into near-extinction in 14 years.

      Delete
    5. Im just saying people seem to be over reacting with the idea of a Jedi on the show, thats all.

    6. I'm just a little disappointed because I know they could have come up with better.

    7. It is a show that should feature the rebel alliance fighting the empire, but instead it is turning into Sith vs Jedi. Which wouldn't be bad except the era that the show is in, if it was say 3-5 years after episode III I could see such characters possibly being around. but 14 years after and it doesn't make much sense. One more thing I want to point out is the Emperor didn't trust very many people so why the hell would he train more. I know he had force sensitive people he trained but they didn't have lightsabers and I don't think he ever trained them. on another note the animation looks terrible.

  8. What Chopper is to R2, this guy is gonna be to Han Solo. They're calling him a cowboy because one of the executive producers wears a cowboy hat. I can just imagine these people in their conference room just blatantly ripping off characters and considering it "homage" to the classics. They then spin their own fashion ideas on to the disney template and boom! I hope VII doesn't get diluted by this bantha fodder. - I sense a disturbance in the force. I don´t know if this means anything, it could just be them playing around with McQuarrie design & is not significant to the show. Although it would be cool to see a creature looking like McQuarrie´s firts drawings of Chewbacca, but not as Kanan´s co-pilot

1: given the fact that they are working on the canon and there are alot of things that are still unfinished (such as the force unleashed)
2: TFU is around this timeline
3: in TFU there was a playable clone wars style-starkiller
4: they are saying that in this rebels show they'll include elements feom the EU

  12. I have a bad feeling about this show. Clone wars itself messed up so many things. I am gonna mention the planet of Mandalorians for good measure. The fact that everything I had ever know from comics books even on the back of action figure cases, the Mandelorians were defeated by the republic and scattered around the universe. but in the clone wars what do they do they have a whole planet wof them with a Queen??? WTF not Mandalore but a queen. And I like the prequels with as silly as they are I like them. but clone wars is just wow. Then they decided not to make a live action show anymore and they do a cartoon. and 5 years BBY they have a jedi??? WTF the empire was everywhere Jedi did not want to be out in the open much less on a populated world. Also I have grown up looking at some great artists from Ralph Mcquarie to Frank Miller I even like Rumiko Takahashi. But the art style on these shows look so bad. Does anyone look at the un proportional characters and see this as good? I will say that I am super excited about episode VII but I am just very disappointed that people are going to take The clone wars and Rebels as cannon, It is like when Star trek started making Voyager and all those other garbage series. I was really looking forward to the live action series but instead we get more sorry clone wars. I apologize for ranting I just hope the series is better then I expect

    2. They portrayed Mandalorer as if it ewre a planet like Naboo. That pissed me off because the Mandos have always been a huge favorite of mine. There is a lot of things I hope the don't make cannon, clone wars would be the biggest one. I am am also gonna mention that Anakin wasn't 100 percent traind yet so why would they give him a padawan??? Their is so many things story wise that don't fit in at all with the rest of the Star wars universe.

    1. Another thing that should be noted is that the council did not fully trust Anakin; they always had a bad feeling about where he was focusing his heart and mind. With that being said, why would they entrust him with a padawan if they felt his emotions were too unstable? Also, by the end of episode II we leave Anakin and an anxious, disobedient rebel and at the beginning of III, he's still reckless and unstable. So why then is he some fearless leader during TCW series? It doesn't make sense to me at all. I've always had difficulty watching that show with a serious mind because I caught myself questioning the continuity too many times and could never get passed the almost clay-looking animation. I'd really rather not have the same happen in this show, because it's pulling more from the OT and that's my favorite trilogy... At least TCW worked with characters I didn't much care for to begin with. I just want to have a Star Wars TV series I can feel really good about watching. I know everything doesn't revolve around my well being, but that's just my input. Sorry if it offends anyone, for one stupid reason or another.

    2. I actually enjoyed the Clone Wars cartoons, mainly because I never really bought most of the PT story in the first place. The PT always seemed to me like bad fan-fic, largely because Lucas only had the most general ideas of what the story was supposed to be, and just hacked it together as he went along. (Hell, he didn't even have Anakin's dark side turn figured out until production of ROTS was well along the way.)

So that makes it easier for me to just take the Clone Wars cartoons as their own little thing, unconnected to the overall SW story. Since I was never really able to reconcile much of the PT with the OT anyway, there's no need in my mind to make continuity sense out of the cartoons. And some of them are pretty good (the series of episodes where the clone troopers deal with a psychotic Jedi general sending them on suicide missions, for instance... not a bad little story there.)

    3. The thing with the PT is that George simply fucked up what would have been a fantastic PT, simply as that! I don't see Anakin as a hero in the PT, more like a whiny little prick and I think casting of Hayden simply fucked things up even more!

What they can do now is to give us really good story and actors for the ST, to make up for the trash in the PT. But PT is saved by Ewan Macgregor because I don't really hate it but I didn't really like it either.

  14. I just wanted to say this:
Isn't the Star Wars Universe based on the JEDI, so it would be conceivable that there would be a JEDI of some sort in this show.
The whole concept of Star Wars was derived from the Samurai and the ways of old.
As for all the JEDI being killed. Vader Purged all the Jedi he could find (sense) or who showed themselves to him. Some probably just went into hiding and decided to live a normal life and wait for whatever happened next.
If you go by the books. Luke did find other force sensitive people, plus SWVII will have more JEDI in it, and Sith.

    1. he found Force sensitive beings but none of them were trained in the Jedi arts and none of them had light sabers.

  15. Still for a Jedi to be on a populated world that the empire is interested in building factories does not seems plausible. Also Jedi are not the only thing in Star Wars there are tons of things that factor in. In the OT I would argue that the biggest struggle would have been between the Rebels and the Empire, even if Luke would have lost to the Emperor the 2nd death star would have been destroyer Quote in point Luke: You're wrong. Soon I'll be dead, and you with me. , Also I agree as well Dopeyjoe I just hope the ST is good then I won't care as much. I love Jedi there just has to be more in the story then that

    1. i will watch the show as entertainment as i did with TCW, I never took anything outside the movies as the "real story" simply because there are no real people/live action in the cartoons, animated series, books etc. ...

I still don´t consider anything from the books & cartoons as part of the real story/canon even if i like a lot of them. TCW was just "star wars themed entertainment" for me & maybe Rebels will be too
