Meet Ezra from Star Wars: Rebels. 2 Teaser Trailers Coming on Monday, February 17.

 rebels

Another character from the upcoming Rebels TV series has been introduced. Meet Ezra, a charismatic teenage con artist who is one of the main characters...

From TV Guide:

When we meet Ezra, he has little interest in becoming a revolutionary. The suave teen has been living on his own on the planet Lothal and is just starting to learn how to use his mysterious new powers. "To survive, instinctively every now and then when he's in a jam he uses the Force," exec producer Dave Filoni says in the exclusive preview video below. "He doesn't call it that. He doesn't know that's what he's doing. He thinks he's got some abilities that are a little strange every now and then, but they help him out. It's instinctive, it's reactionary."

As Darth Vader and Co. begin to expand their grip on the Outer Rim, Ezra will be drawn into the burgeoning rebel alliance. "With Ezra we see how a kid is reacting to this imperial rule," Filoni tells TV Guide Magazine. "That becomes a big question: What is imperial rule like? We've seen it in the movies with a big rebellion that ends up blowing up the Death Star, but do we just assume that when the Empire took over in Revenge of the Sith it was seen as a bad thing? I would challenge that. It wasn't this terrible thing that came in and was cruel to everyone all at once. It was slow to build its power base and spread out, and then we get to see the rebel alliance it affects, and the repercussions of that tyranny."

rebels

Ezra is played by Taylor Gray, who starred in the Nickelodeon series Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures. "I'm excited to voice the role of Ezra in Star Wars Rebels but I'm even more excited to be a part of the Star Wars legacy," Gray says. "I can't wait for fans new and existing to come together and see the next chapter in the most legendary tale known in the galaxy."

Filoni chose Gray for the role because his voice wasn't too contemporary. "I don't want to sound like I just went down to the local mall [to cast the role]," says Filoni, who also oversaw the previous Star Wars animated series, The Clone Wars. "There's a rawness to him that feels very authentic. Taylor really seems to be able to occupy the character in this time period of the Star Wars universe. He's a real kid who's out there in the galaxy."

For those hardcore Star Wars fans who might be groaning over such a young protagonist — and Filoni knows you're out there — have no fear, Ezra will be mentored by Kanan, a Jedi who survived the Emperor's purge and is part of the rebel movement. (Freddie Prinze Jr. voices the cowboy-like character.)

And tune in to Disney XD on Monday, Feb. 17 during Kickin' It (6/5c) and Lab Rats (6:30/5:30c) for the premiere of two new teaser trailers for Star Wars Rebels.

    1. While I like the appearance of Exra better than Katan, I do have to say, there just seems something a bit uninspired by these characters.

Maybe after the collapse of the Old Republic and the rise of the Empire, it might cause fashions to be a bit plain and subdued.

In any event, I speak only visually. I really won't know if I like these characters or not until after I've watched a few episodes.

  3. I don't get why they keep introducing force sensitive characters when in the OT we know that after Yoda becomes one with the force, Luke is the only jedi left

Rebels takes place between Episode III and Episode IV.

    2. I know that, my point is why create characters that we know are going to be killed off?

      Delete
    3. Oh I wish... that'd really give this show a dark overtone! Sadly they'll likely have a cop out excuse as to how they survived unnoticed...

      Delete
    4. Because the characters are living in the time period before all the Jedi are killed off. Otherwise, why do prequels at all?

In any case, all we know is that the Jedi are eliminated. A person can be Force sensitive I suppose, but not be a fully trained Jedi.

      Delete
    5. "Otherwise, why do prequels at all?"
Exactly. This is the whole point. They had the opportunity to explore new parts of star wars. I presumed it would be about normal and relatable people, interesting characters, presumebly rebels. (Hence the name...).But no, we've gone back to force sensitive characters yet again..

  4. Well This gives me a little more hope for rebels, i cant wait to see how kanan and ezras relationship develop into a master padawan thing. for all the people bitching about the show, just accept it its not THAT bad, from what ive seen so far it looks pretty intresting, and i am a die hard star wars fan, ive read all the books i know everything about star wars, chill people.

What the fuck is this, Harry Potter? X-Men? The force isn't some mysterious magic that just happens upon you. It took Luke quite a long time to figure out how the force is manipulated. It doesn't just happen by accident. Jesus christ, this deal is getting worse all the time. I haven't lost 100% of my hope yet. I've gotta see a few episodes first, but so far this is going further and further down the sarlacc's digestive system.

    1. A mysterious power he's coming to grips with sounds pretty much exactly what Luke went through :P

Don't get me wrong... this series has me more concerned than anything else I've heard but I still firmly stand behind the idea that nothing can be worse than the prequels.

It'll be a dark dark day if I'm proven wrong... oh so dark.

      Delete
    2. Another thing: If Kanan is trying so hard to lay low about being a Jedi, why is he mentoring a supposed force-user? Wouldn't that just increase their chances of being discovered and killed?

      Delete
    3. if he doesnt teach him to control it the empire could twist him into a agent of the dark side if he is ever discovered, plus a untrained force user is unstable with his powers and can be reckless and a danger

When did Luke ever "stumble upon" any force-manipulating powers before he discovered what the Force was? He had no idea that he was strong with the force until Ben told him. Before that we was a completely normal farmboy. This kid sounds like Harry Potter before he discovered he was a wizard. If you ask me, I don't see the force the same way as I do the magic of witches and wizards, but this series seems to be stealing the depth and meaning of the Force and turning it into the childish magic that Disney loves so much... It's sickening.

You obviously don't understand what it's like being a Star Wars fan...

      Delete
    7. Yeah, Luke was completely oblivious to the Force until Ben told him about it. However, logic would seem to me that Luke would have already felt something inside of him. The Force would be evident in his instincts - like how he was abble to win the race at Beggar's Canyon. So, it's a bit mysterious, I think.

    8. Excuse me Dopey.... You don't know me.... I have been a fan ever since I was a kid in the '70's.... I just happen to have watched each Star Wars movie 'In the Theatre... Starting with Star Wars: A New Hope, before they ever added the subtitle "A New Hope"...
So don't make assumptions before you talk....
I being a Star Wars fan will watch the show... Good luck if you don't.

      Delete
    9. That's not legitimate force manipulation though, that is the instincts of the Skywalker family. From what this article is saying, it sounds like this kid can use force levitation and things like that, referring to their use of the word "powers." Luke never really had any powers until he learned what the force was and how to use it.

I appologize for my poorly made assumption, but I too am a life-long Star Wars fan. If new material is released, I'm compelled to watch it. It's hard to watch it knowing things are being completely changed and the original themes of the Star Wars series are being completely disregarded, but it's hard not to watch because there's nothing I love more than Star Wars. This is the inner conflict tens of thousands of fans endure and have endured over several decades.

    2. That all depends on what the story team redefines as canon. You seem to be a lot more angry about people bitching than us people actually bitching. Don't be making assumptions like, "you think you are true star wars fans when all you actually did was watch the movies, you have not delved into the star wars world like a true fan does." I've been a fan of the EU For decades. Don't you tell me I'm no true Star Wars fan.

If you bothered to read my above comment (which seems to be a lot of people's issue on this sight), "I haven't lost 100% of my hope yet. I've gotta see a few episodes first." I know that force powers are stumbled upon in the EU, but that does not mean it applies to Star Wars canon. There are so many different realities contained in the EU. The fact that you're bunching them all together is almost laughable.

    7. My brother has read almost every book and loves the movies. I've read a few books (really liked the Thawn trilogy but don't really like reading books. I buy every movie release on the day of the release while my brother just sticks to the copies he owns. Who is the more "True Fan".

      Delete
    8. when did i say i was bunching them all together?? in almost all the eras and authors there have been people stumbling across force powers, look, i wasnt talking specifically to you, every time a news story is posted on rebels alot of people are bitching about really stuff that doesnt need to be bitched about, or stuff they use their imagination to create, people love to bitch, i dont know how much you know about star wars and my first post wasnt directed at you specifically i was just fed up with all these people bitching at stuff that isnt even a big deal.

    9. Attempting to define what it is to be a "true" Star Wars fan is like trying to prove theories about what happens after death. It's impossible.

    10. "i was just fed up with all these people bitching at stuff that isnt even a big deal." Just because it's not a big deal to you doesn't mean it's not a big deal to everyone else. A Star Wars fan of all people should know that.

well people who have just watched the movies and not gotten any deeper can be ruled out, i know you just said you have read some of the EU so you are not one of those people

    12. @Rebel Scum i dont know ive read or listened with a audio book almost every single book (hundreds) of star wars and comics. ive watched every thing to do with the movies and tv shows, when i was a kid i spend so much money on action figures and vehicals i had every single one, like literally 3 huge boxes full.

lets just say we are both big star wars fans :P

      Delete
    13. I didn't grow up where I could have access to every audio book or single book of star wars comics. I lived in the middle of nowhere and my dad was very frugal. So, pretty much, all I had was the movies and a couple action figures I had luckily gotten for Christmas or birthdays. To say that someone's not a true fan because they didn't read this or didn't have that action figure is pretty much a lame and uncompasionate thing to me.

    14. @dopeyjoe i would know better then the average noob if it was a big deal or not. and seeing as others agree with me about people bitching i am not alone. so stop taking this personally and let other people reply for a change

    15. "To say that someone's not a true fan because they didn't read this or didn't have that action figure is pretty much a lame and uncompasionate thing to me" That's what I'm saying. It's not our place to say what it means to be a "true" Star Wars fan. There are too many levels of fandom and it branches out over every existing generation.

    16. Rebel Scum i meant that people who only watch the movies ONLY and not go and try to get more into the star wars universe are not true fans, please do not take what i said the wrong way

    22. dandino8100. So what you're telling me is that because I prefer to watch the films, and never really got into the EU I'm not a "true" Star Wars fan? Thanks for letting me know that I've just wasted the last 36 years of my life.

I've read the Thrawn trilogy and that did nothing for me. When the Prequels where being made I bought a bi monthly Star wars magazine that had reviews of EU books but the stories really held no interest for me. I am aware of what has been happening in the Eu I've just not delved as deep as you. ReplyDelete
  9. So I realize that the EU splinters a lot of the fanbase. You get a lot of guys who think anything from the EU is trash before ever seeing it. While I realize that all fans have their own perspective, I think you should at least try some of this stuff out before hating on it.
There are some similarities between this and pieces of the EU. I personally think that's good. But whether you like it or not, I think the EU (whether it be all new or use some of the old EU piecemeal) is going to be a big part of Star Wars going forward and it may be best to come to grips with that now if you love Star Wars.

    2. Cannot agree more.

  11. I always just treat the EU as the EU. Like how comic books have so many interpretations. I loved some of them. A perfect example of conflicting fans... I loved what Karen Travis did with the Clone Commandos and with the Mandalorians. While others hate it.

I'm fine with the movies going along as their own canon apart from the books. Just think of them as alternate stories. They aren't any less true... just their own version.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think you have a great take on the EU (and I too loved Karen Travis's work, I was surprised when I learned others hated it so much).

I do think one concern going forward will be the story group's intention to move to one solid canon, instead of the tiered system that has been employed over the last several years. I think it places more value on much of what will be the "official" EU. But I'm sure you can still follow the saga via films only and be just fine.

      Delete
  12. I'm looking forward to watching this show only, and I mean ONLY, because I know that it is going to be defined as definitive canon which will tie TCW, this, and the ST together. Besides that it just looks alright. It has the look and maybe the feel of the OT to an extent mixed with some of the PT but it definitely doesn't have the logic or functionality of the OT.

Why would Kanan (a jedi in hiding) start training an apprentice if he doesn't want to be noticed by the Empire? Why does the inquisitors lightsaber have rings around the hilt? wouldn't they get in the way of his hands if he grabs it at the wrong angle or starts spinning it around? and why does Ezra steal helmets from the people who are making his life hell? and why does Kanan have that completely non functional sleeve armor thing? And does Chopper have a bad motivator or is he just pissed because he's not a cool looking astromech? and finally why didn't they hunt Ezra down yet or steal him as a baby to be a force sensitive sith assassin?

the jedi had holocrons about every force sensitive baby in the galaxy and if he's 14 he'd have been born in 19 BBY when the republic fell. the emperor probably had or read the important holocrons like that right? idk maybe I'm over thinking these things i guess I'll just have to see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't understand the hate here for these new characters. You all love Ashoka Tano and the Clone Wars but you have a hard time with these new characters? P.s. I hate Ashoka and the CW.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ashoka's existence simply doesn't make sense in view of the events contained in episodes II and III, nor does a majority of TCW material.

      Delete
    2. I'm ignoring the clone wars as any relevance. I was hoping that Rebels would actually be better when it comes to continuity but apparently it's hardly any better at all. So far, all the characters that have been announced have gone on about how they are a jedi and they have a lightsaber.. Even though this show is supposed to be about Rebels. In other words, a bunch of interesting characters that form a rebellion. Not a bunch of Jedi we've seen a million times before. So yet again I'm going to have to ignore this show's relevance the same way I ignored the clone wars' completely unrealistic and unbelievable characters. Hopefully the storylines and dialogue are ok.

      Delete
    3. Count me among those who feel that it made absolutely no sense story-wise to give Anakin a padawan in TCW. At no point in the PT was the Jedi Council ever confident enough in Anakin's ability to control his emotions to have assigned him an impressionable young kid as an apprentice.

And it certainly moved everything even further from Vader's comment in the original movie, "When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master." True, that line was included before Lucas decided to make Vader Luke's father, but still... might we at least TRY to maintain some sort of story continuity?

But again, this is why the PT and especially TCW don't feel to me as though they're part of the same story as the OT. I tend take them in the same vein as I take the Infinities comics.

      Delete
    4. I agree totally. And then to put him on the Jedi council and not make him a Master, It just doesn't make sense.

      Delete
  14. I didn't like her at first but she began to grow on me as she matured. I mean I don't hate the new characters I hate their both force users. They're trying to capture the look and feel of the OT but they're contradicting themselves by putting potential jedi in the show.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The force-user concern seems very valid to me. The EU in general has had too many force-users after the purge. But perhaps they'll make it work long term and we'll see these two (or at least just Kanan) go down in a blaze of glory by the end of the series.

I'm also a bit concerned by what appears to be Lucasfilm's selection of canon. The fact that this show is canon leads me to believe that TCW is canon (and a lot of it doesn't fit as well as other EU, see above comments) (Full disclosure -- I enjoy TCW and am watching through the entire series again, I just recognize its limitations).

Even if you despise the EU there is some pretty good stuff out there that would make for better canon (Darth Plagueis for one). My hope would be that the "canon stamp" would apply only to very high level material, but we shall see.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree entirely. Otherwise, what's the point of redefining the canon in the first place?

      Delete
    2. Amen. Unless they are making it like a gold standard, there's no sense in abandoning what they have.

    3. So, Disney eradicated the EU canon for..... this?!?!?

      Delete
    4. if i have a common problem with EU, that would be it...seems that force users crop up like weeds, and the rule of 2 for the sith seems more like the rule of 200 or more ,depending on what day of the week it is. i hope the newer canon coming after ROTJ really slims this down a bit. i miss the slower, more "one shot", more stand alone stories that don't require a new force wielder every other day, and the villians are not all Darth Vader wannabe's. Just my opinion, i do realize alot of fans are EU based and that's cool, i just don't always want to be dragged down that same road..again, and again, and...

  21. TCW- makes a mess of the timeline between EPII and III.
Rebels- Kind of ignores the happenings in EPIII ( order 66 ), but Quinlan Vos survived, as many of you probably know. Still don't like any of the new characters though..
Looks like everything Dave Filoni & co touches turns to canon and ignores or complicate the really good stories that should count.. Personally I don't count TCW and rebels as canon, but I think that should be up to yourself. I also would love to take a shit in Mr. Filonis hat just to show him what i think of his contributions to expand the star wars universe with characters that really shouldn't exist, and way to much gungans

I think Disney has every intention in ignoring Episode III, as well as I and II. The more I hear about this project (and Episode VII) the more I sense that they are making this movie solely for old guys in their 50s and not the generation who grew up with the prequels (who make up a huge part of Star War fanbase, btw.)

      Delete
    2. Really hope that's the case.. I agree and I see your point about Quinlan Vos, but this show and the characters just doesn't make any sense at all. If the rebellion had involvement with Jedi, Vader would have been on the frontline and eliminated them personaly.

    1. No it really messes up what's established in the films themselves. Beside from adding what, at least to me, seems to be an inordinate amount of time between the two films the entire concept of Ashoka makes no sense. It'd take so long I'm just going to sum it up to it meaning that Anakin should be a Master is ROTS and considering him bitching about not being a master is an entire plot point in ep3 you can see the problem there. It also make the clone troopers nonsensical. Now this complaint is a little more personal, but all through out the show Anakin is evil. Really evil in some points. He's supposed to be a "heroic and noble" knight of the old republic and Obi-wan's best friend, not a moody psychopath. And don't even get people started on Mandalore....

I just don't see TCW in that light..i really liked the expansion of the clones and their thoughts and ideals, Rex is my fav new character, and i though Anakin losing a padawan helped the storyline of him not being a master...but maybe the new films will have something we can all take something positive from them. i would venture to say that most fans that did not appreciate TCW will not care for Rebels either...but i hope i am wrong. i personally hope its a great show, my Grandchildren and i am really looking forward to seeing it.

    3. Untill Authors were allowed to make stories before and during the prequels there was a system. From before "Heir to the empire" (9ABY) till after "Acopalypse" (44ABY) there were order and almost all the stories were really good. When it comes to the stories from the few years before the prequels, during the prequels and the rise of the empire years between EPIII and IV there is no longer any order. The stories are tangled and TCW is on the bottom of the stories when it comes to Logic, characters and stories in general. The first Clone wars series from 2004-05 were good and they made sense and ended where EP III started. In the New animated series, Anakin is suddenly a "master", Grievous coughs for No reasons, and they ressurected Darth Maul (huuuuge mistake) and Anakin really don't behave like a Jedi should and we don't recognize him like the person he is in the Movies and the fact that he suddenly has a Padawan that leaves him less than three years later without being granted the grade of master goes against Jedi principles. I could go on through the night about Things that don't make sense but I will spare you guys for it. There is simply to much that doesn't make sense and if I could say just one thing to mr. Filoni, I would say get a new job.

  23. Well this is a kids show so I don't think it will mess stuff up. Maybe if ezra is in epvii and is a solo or skywalker. Sadley I this can happen.

But to me real star wars is anh, esb and rotj. All the other stories ate just EU. PT did mess up the clone wars and the jedis

    1. Wait, the prequel trilogy messed up the clone wars tv show?!? What have you been smoking?

    2. no not the tv shop but before PT the clone wars where a untold story with a lot of mystery to it. The Jedis where not fools, there was no midiclorians, there were no clones fighting on the jedis side that would go bad and be stormtroopers, and I could go on.

To me the clone was tv show is just like any other kids tv show no more. But it's a lot bether than the PT movies.

  24. Rebels is sounding too much like the "Last of the Jedi" series. The Kanan and Ezra relationship sounds too similar to Ferus Olin and Trever Flume's relationship except Trever wasn't force adept. Hopefully it turns out different though...

  27. there is a very easy way to make the characters interesting/mysterious & more Star Wars: PUT COOL HELMETS ON THEM :) & it looks like they already have done that with Ezra.

I have seen a lot of comments about Kanan & Ezra looking to much drawn in disney style, well on with the helmets & problem solved :D a helmet can add so much & that is why Vader & Boba Fett is two of the most popular characters & Fett never takes his helmet off.

Ps. I don´t care that much about the animation style, but i will not miss the claylike animation from TCW although i liked the show.
I wonder what Ashoka will look like if she turns up in Rebels?

    1. Hopefully Ashoka is dead and long gone. Anything else would just make things even more stupid.
