Pic of the Day: Star Wars: Episode 7 Production Meeting at Lucasfilm!

star wars

Lucasfilm has updated their official site with some new images. The most interesting one is from what appears to be a production meeting about the new Star Wars movie...

(click the image for bigger version)

You can see in the back that they're using references from the original trilogy. It's really great to see something real. There is so much emotion and excitement coming from this single image. Can't wait for more.

The big question is: Is this concept art with the Falcon from Episode 7 or it's a concept they never released before?

Is that Luke on Dagobah on the TV screen?

Thanks to the Anon who posted the picture in the comments section of another article.

  1. Here's a breakdown of the people in the image, and why they confirm that this is a meeting for Episode VII: http://farfarawayradio.com/2014/02/14/breaking-down-the-possible-episode-vii-concept-art/

  2. Is this the first confirmation of the falcon returning? I don't recognize that still

    1. I don't recognize it either... Too dark to be Bespin, Hoth ect.. However the planet does actually kinda make me think Coruscant for some reason. It's too terrestrial to be that though, anyone else have a guess?

  5. It's all part of their marketing campaign. Fans are going to see this picture and get their panties twisted over having to wait so long for episode VII, leaving time for all of them to post about it all over the internet, thus spreading the word of episode VII; beause STar Wars is a fan-based franchise. It strives on the knowledge that it's fans gain through watching movies, reading books, playing video games and so on. Now that they've got a new story to be added to the existing movieverse, we're all here going gaga over it, just anticipatig that moment in the theater when we see the dark screen with the text fading in: "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away." I'm getting chills just thinking about it! That alone is enough reason for an enormous majority of (if not all) moviegoers to stand in line to see EpVII in theaters. It's brilliant on their part, but for us fans it really does suck. It's just like this winter we've been having in Chicago: feels like the wait is never going to end, but the satisfaction after the wait will be worth it, guaranteed!

    1. Good lord relax. It's not nearly that big of a deal. Movies take a long time to make and the slow crawl to November 2015 is simply part of that process. Assuming that photos like this are meant as nothing more than a marketing campaign is both naive and cynical. It's...just a picture.

    2. You didn't even read my comment, did you? I know film development, pre and post production takes quite a long time and we're still quite a distance away from december 2015. I'm simply stating that until that time, Disney and LFL will not be releasing much information about EpVII content at all, therefore forcing the fanbase to build their anticipation for the premier and talk about it with all of their friends and family. My guess is that word of mouth will be their greatest marketing assett. In your eyes it may just be a picture, but to tens of thousands of fans all over the world, this is assurance.

  6. I hope they're filming as much as possible. I'm excited for the film of course but I absolutely love production diaries, concept art, meetings, filming, bloopers, post production, etc etc etc.

    1. If they were not planning on EPVII and the fans found out about it, there would be rioting at Disney Headquarters and a boycott of all things Disney of Biblical proportions. Come to think of it, it may be a good idea to plan this stuff if EPVII sucks. Who's with me?!

  9. Those look to me like new production paintings.I don't recognize the rocky environment on the right, and the painting of the Falcon is something I've never seen before. Makes sense that they'd have some new art up in their meeting room rather than stuff from the old movies.

And on the TV monitor, that does indeed look like Luke on Dagobah as he enters the dark side cave. Perhaps they're discussing whatever brush with the dark side Luke or one of the other characters will have in the new movie (you know somebody's got to start dabbling in the dark side at some point in the new trilogy.)

An interesting photo for them to circulate. ;^)

    1. The Falcon painting could be concept art or a visual they want for the new movie.

    2. It looks like this is the first new concept art, but we can't be sure. Way back when, there were concepts for Had Abbadon, the lava filled capitol of the empire, that got turned into Mustafar. And Tatooine used to be Utapau, which also got re-used later. But then again, this far into the production, they would have to have new concept art.

    3. Yeah, and I think we've probably seen most of the old concept art that they might want to recycle for the ST. They sure didn't skimp on including that stuff in the "Making of" books.

The Falcon painting looks very much in the same style as the production paintings we saw for ROTS, and since to my knowledge they never meant to include the Falcon in this prominent a role in the prequels (we got little background "easter egg" cameos, but that was it) I have to assume that this is either something new, or an older painting with the Falcon added later.

My money says this is a new painting, and it's no accident that it appears in the background of this photo. As Dopeyjoe points out, they are very conscious of creating buzz around the new film, and holding out on substantial announcements while occasionally circulating a tidbit like this... well, it gets us yappin' about the movie, now doesn't it? ;^)

    4. i think the one on the right of the rocky looking surface is in AOTC when Padme and Anakin are arriving on Geonosis to save Obi-wan

    5. The first looks like Boba holding Jangos helmet in Episdoe 2, and the second one looks like Luke flying in the death star assault in Episode 4. The third is Count Dooku shooting lightning, and the last is old-ben with Luke on Dagobah.

  10. I have never seen those Falcon pictures I think they are new. the excitement is building it is gonna be a long wait. but I think the build up will be fun. For a couple years I thought there wouldn't be another Star Wars movie for along time, but now we know one is coming out it is gonna be awesome.

  11. Anyone else notice Old Ben above the rocky landscape art?

  12. Also to add to my above comment, whatever it is, they're looking at Dagobah stuff. Could Luke be returning to Dagobah?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well, baring in mind that the production designer is in this meeting, I will say that this may be a sign that we'll be seeing Dagobah make a return. I only say that because, well why else would they print out and put up pictures of it? But a return of Dagobah would really surprise me to be honest. Maybe Luke sends his jedi kid in training to do the trial like in the cave. Which would be weird. But they also have that screencap of Luke inside the cave on the monitor in the background. But apart from that, I can't see why Dagobah would play any importance..

    2. Luke could be training jedi there

      Delete
    3. ..Yeah but my point is, why Dagobah? Luke could train jedi anywhere. Why pick a gross swampy planet to train Jedi. Only reason Yoda did it was because he lived there and had to do it.

      Delete
    4. He wouldn't train the new jedis on Dagobah, he would train them on Yavin 4. If they take inspiration from the EU novels he visits Dagobah several times, and in heir to the empire he ventures further into the cave and sees another vision of his future wife Mara succeeding to kill him on Jabbas sail barge. And the reason to why Yoda hid on Dagobah was because the cave radiated with dark side energy, and that made it impossible for Vader and the emperor to find him.

    5. 30 yrs after Jedi, Luke should be training at the Jedi temple

      Delete
    6. I don't want any Jedi temples or anything. It would take hundreds and hundreds of years for the Jedi to reach high numbers and need any kind of temples or establishments. In episode 7 there would be a maximum of around 5 jedi. But I only want 2 Jedi. I only want Luke and his kid to be the jedi. It makes for a much more interesting story and creates much higher stakes for the plot if there are only 2 jedi left. And it makes the force and the existence of jedi much more special and sacred if it's not all over the place and slammed in your face, and it makes the story much more personal if it's exclusive to the skywalkers, To be honest I don't want Leia to be a Jedi either. I know in return of the Jedi Luke said to her "In time you will learn to use it as I have". But eh, I just want her to be the badass who makes witty liners to Han. Leave the Jedi stuff to a minimum pleeease so it's actually interesting and special when it does crop up in the movies, instead of it just becoming normal.

It would not take the Jedi Order "hundreds and hundreds of years" to rebuild. I get what you're getting at too, but lesser Jedi wont make the movie more personal. Leaving Leia out of the loop of being a Jedi would make a plot hole in movieverse, because like you said Luke told Leia she would eventually learn the Jedi ways. Also, leaving Anakin's daughter out of the Jedi Order would be dumb. It would be dumb on Luke's part to leave his sister out, who has the potential to be potent in the Force.

Making her just a "witty liners to Han" is restricting her character and is a bit sexist (whether you're female or male commenting on this forum).

  13. If that's new concept art then we can expect really elaborate galaxy designs in the cinematography I'm down so long as the acting Is good. The galaxy in that picture seems new. There also seems like there could be a distant space station in the distance of that picture. I'm not sure. I'm on my phone. That galaxy though. Very interesting.

    2. Nice.
And there's also Yoda on a book (?) laid on the deck, just above the notebook of Kathleen Kennedy.
Regarding the falcon concept arst: if you use Photoshop or other program to change the image levels so you get more details, it seems there's a sea or a big lake on the left picture! And on the right picture, it looks like a kind of giant cascade there (on the left border).
I cannot tell for sure with such pictures. So, has anyone else noticed this?

    3. "there's also Yoda on a book (?) laid on the deck"

It looks like a leaflet from the Star Wars exhibition held in London in 2007.

  16. In the background top image it looks like obi-wan in the right hand corner. I zoomed in in photoshop and lightened the image.... either obi-wan or a bald guy with sparse hair. hmmm?

Definitely Luke entering the cave on Dagobah on the top left..... always hoped that scene would be explained. I've never been much on the EU, but i've always imagined that could be a place where yoda battled and defeated a dark jedi or Sith lord.

    1. It is explained. You just have to pay a bit more attention. That's why I love that scene so much because you actually have to think haha. I hope they get back to a deeper story in the sequels instead of mindless action.

  18. So maybe Alec Guinness will return as old Ben force ghost once again. Outtake footage/CGI/voice artist, they could probably pull it off.
