Updated With a Video and More Details. Alan Horn on Star Wars: Episode 7.

star wars

Variety's reporter Brent Lang shared on twitter some interesting comments from this morning by Disney's Alan Horn...

Here are some of the highlights from Variery's article:
Some scenes for “Star Wars Episode VII” have already been shot in the Middle East, Disney chairman Alan Horn confirmed, while principal photography is slated to begin in May at U.K.’s Pinewood Studios.
“We did some second-unit work in Abu Dhabi. We have to give that the ‘Star Wars’-ian look, if I can use that as an adjective — we need to go to these places”, Horn said.
Horn said casting is “almost complete,” as he indicated two weeks ago, but that Disney is not prepared to make any announcements yet.
“I’ve learned to be very careful about ‘Star Wars,’” Horn said. “If I say, ‘There will be no skateboards in ‘Star Wars’… that gets headlines.”
Horn said Disney has not determined the final budget for “Star Wars Episode VII.” It will be in the range of “large, tentpole kinds of movies” in the neighborhood of $175 million to $200 million.
“We need to give the audience … essentially a full meal in return for their affection for and devotion to this property,” he said.
Horn said later this week he will fly to London to discuss production design and screenplay with director J.J. Abrams.
“Star Wars Episode VII” is scheduled to premiere Dec. 18, 2015. Disney plans to release the next two “Star Wars” films in 2017 and 2019, but Horn said it has not been determined if those will also have December preem dates. Studio also plans to release two “Star Wars” spinoff movies, in 2016 and 2018.

I wonder if his flight to London has something to do with the rumored breakfast on Thursday!

  2. So they've finished filming in the desert? I reckon it can't be far off a big announcement. May the 4th is a Sunday so I expect something before that.

on that ATAT foot looking out over the desert with the force theme in the background....

    4. Alec Guiness was a truly great actor. Mark has it in him, too. He still has his voice and energy. He will be great. He just needs to train like a champion for the next three months and he will own it.

    5. An old Jedi Master Luke Skywalker is a certainty. I've heard that Hamill's role in 7 is huge, 4-6 months on set.

    6. Hopefully we see Luke in a duel again :) Hopefully if he dies he dies heroically like obi-wan rather than some stupid explosion or he just gets shot or something. So many modern movies just kill off huge characters like it's no big deal. Drives me mad.

      Delete
    7. I do think these movies should deal with the end of Luke's life, but only in Episode IX, at the end of the Sequel Trilogy. He doesn't have to "die" in the quite ordinary sense. Rather he could somehow "ascend".

      Consider this seeming "escalation":

      1. Qui-Gon becomes the first to discover how to preserve his individuality after becoming one with the Force. However, his body did not disappear at death, and there is no evidence that he can appear as a visible Force-ghost (is this BECAUSE he did not "bring along" his bodily form?)

      2) Yoda and Obi-Wan learn the technique from Qui-Gon, but seem to refine it further. Upon physical death, their bodies are absorbed into the Force and fade away. Possibly as a consequence of this, they can appear with a spectral bodily form. Yet they are only "ghosts".

      3) Here we enter Sequel Trilogy territory and speculation. Yoda and Obi-Wan became one with the Force, but had to first die (Obi-Wan even let Vader cut him down to achieve this). Is is possible that the next stage in this "escalation" is the ability to ENTER THE FORCE WHILE STILL ALIVE? Is this the ultimate refinement of Qui-Gon's technique? May Luke at the end simply step into the transcended realm and take his living body with him?

(I could imagine a scene where his body dissolves into a searing light and disappears ... and all that is left is his detached bionic hand, the only part of him that was not "alive".) Could he, after this, fullfil the Campbellian scheme of the archetypal Hero finally becoming "Master of both worlds"? He will live on forever in the Force, but can on occasion step back into physical reality, not as a ghost but as a tangible person (in some kind of "glorified" body).

If Anakin's spirit somehow helps with this final transition, it would be the ultimate fulfillment of HIS quest as well -- in the end he DID find out how to 'stop the ones I care about from dying'.

      Just my two cents.

      Delete
    8. that scenario is too close to that other "event" that possibly happened 2000 years ago. It would be cool if Luke was the center of the Force and was able to negate the light and dark side and just make the Force one encompassing thing.

  5. "casting almost done?" I can't believe they are less then a month away from filming actors and still haven't finished Casting, this must be the longest casting in the history of film.

    1. This is great news, actually! Disney/LFL has ONE shot at getting it right and the fact that they're taking their time (while they can) is only going to mekt the production better for all the fans despite their impatience and nerdrage over NOTHING! LOL Disney/LFL/Kennedy/Abrams are all doing it right and we should thank them!

  7. Here's my interpretation of the facts:

    1) He hasn't read the script and has a very vague idea of what happens in the film
    2) They're trying to finish production as quickly as possible, most likely because they'll be hard pressed to meet Dec 2015 deadline.
    3) They want to rush the next projects even more.
    4) George Lucas a consultant is a good idea.
    5) Usually you don't like partners when you believe they will get in the way or complain about something that is less than preferable in a production.

    1. Disney stated it was delighted with the final draft screenplay, so the possibility of Horn not having an idea what the story is, is not supported. He'll be merely going over the script to refresh his memory, or reviewing minor tweaks.

      Delete
    2. Or maybe he'll be discussing how to handle some information they didn't want revealed that has come to light in the last week.

  8. "movies may revert to May release dates from Dec debuts. Depends on screenplay readiness."

Uhh, isn't the script supposed to be ready already? Or does he mean VII will be released in December, but VIII and IX will be in May? Again, Alan Horn confuses more than he enlightens.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They may revert to May release for future movies. Episode 7 is firmly set for December 18, 2015.

      Delete
    2. So Ep VII in December 2015, Ep VIII in May 2016? Thats to close unless they are filming with Peter Jackson's production method. (3 movies at once) I think we may be looking at Dec 2015, Ep VIII in May 2017, and then Ep IX in May 2018. That way they get more bang out of Ep VII including a May 2016 re-release. ;-)

      Delete
    3. ep viii in may 2016? He means that all the films were set for May releases, but as production has been pushed back and that ep7 is delayed, then obviously the following films will be delayed and probably December too. But, if the screenplays are indeed ready early, then they will move it back to May again. But it will still take like 2 years to film. I rather highly doubt that we will get ep viii 5 months after episode vii ...

      Delete
    4. Well, once again, interpreting Horn's words is like reading tea leaves. "script readiness" may mean that the EP 7 script is not ready and EP 7 will be released May 2016 to destroy Batman VS Superman! It's like a chess match to dominate the box office.

I can wait. Star Wars in the Summer time is my favorite thing.

  13. I might prefer a May 2016 release for Episode VII... seeing it right before Christmas doesn't feel right. There's something about the May release that jives with the energy you get from the anticipation of summer.

As for "I think we may be looking at Dec 2015, Ep VIII in May 2017, and then Ep IX in May 2018. That way they get more bang out of Ep VII including a May 2016 re-release. ;-)"

They already said that they'd be releasing a film each year, so instead Episode IX would probably be 2019 and the non trilogy film would release in 2018.

  15. Lots of signs pointing to delayed filming here. Especially the script. Didn't Viral have an article saying that SW7 has no space booked at Pinewood Studios thru June?

You're telling me this thing shoots in 3 or 4 weeks from today. They would have at least confirmed the Big 3 if they were ready. I don't see the film to start shooting until they make the Big 3 official.

    3. One thing that concerns me is that I don't like to see Hollywood execs put their influence on the project. When I saw that Alan Horn interview a few weeks back I was not impressed. I'm concerned because this reminds me of the story Kevin Smith told about working with that Wild wild west dude while working on his own Superman script with polar bears... I hope the execs stay out of it.

    4. "See to it personally, commander! There'll be no-one to stop us this time!"

    5. No no no no no Alan Horn and as many people need to be involved in this and put in their input. A film, script in particular needs constant critic and analysis from the execs and producers. Letting directors do whatever they want is a recipe for disaster. Look at the star wars prequels for instance. The originals had loads of people around the production of those films, especially Gary Kurtz, which of course George hated and got rid of him by Return of the Jedi. Execs are hugely important to the process.

      Delete
    6. Last Anon, agreed, Alan Horn is one of the legendary execs in Hollywood filmmaking. This guy gets thanked at the Oscars on a regular basis. He knows what makes films works. All those Harry Potter and Batman films at Warner Bros.? Alan Horn. Disney on top this last year? Same guy.

      Delete
    7. Ok I guess I'll concede that his involvement might not be a bad thing. Believe me I'm all too aware of giving too much power to a director/writer/producer, I wasn't implying that's how I felt about power distribution in film production or that I'd be pro-Lucasonian Prequel production haha.... as I know the balance of power is what made the OT so great.

I generally do feel hollywood execs ruin the artistry and expression in film making though... but I liked Harry Potter and the Dark Knight... can't say the same for the other 2 but not saying the third was his fault haha.

Part of my dislike for executive input comes from working at a children's book company, where the owner asked me to draw a farting donkey into the book... Long story but I'm sure you get the point.

      Delete
    8. Aras, understood. No artist wants to be told how to execute. But I do believe tension between studio execs and directors has yielded some great things. On the other hand, Orson Welles had complete control over Citizen Kane and that man made a perfect film.

      Delete
    9. If you look at the record of the OT, George Lucas was very open to collaboration. He accepted others' ideas and ran with them. Their collaboration yielded the greatest fruit. The concept of emergence is that multiple individuals working together can create something greater and more surprising than the work of an individual. I imagine that when Michelangelo set his sculptors to work, the same process happened.

      Delete
    10. Yes... Wells! Another director that comes to mind is Kubrick... though he did consult with people like Carl Sagan for 2001... though more for research than anything else... but I'm glad he did.

In regards to the OT though... was Lucas haggling with hollywood execs to produce the story? I was under the impression that most of the (positive) friction came from working with Kasdan who wanted to kill Han off n' all that.

Well whatever the case is I'm sure Star Wars VII will kick ass... they'll be better than the prequels and that would be good enough for me... though who knows maybe they'll surpass the OT... though without Ralph Mcquarrie that's a tall order.

  18. As to moving it to May 2016 as alluded to be Horn... It might help out marvel too. Simply put move Captain America 3 to April 2016 instead of May and give it and exclusive Star Wars trailer. Cap 2 already made $500m this April so it will do well, plus now it has a Star Wars trailer which always sells more tickets.

Next off Warner Brothers will flee the May slot for Batman vs Superman to Warner Brothers normal big release slot in July since Star War will crush its chances of making tons of money and likely beat its sales too.

Finally it gives them 5 more months to get VII back on schedule if their is an issue which he may have alluded to (or not). Plus they can always claim tradition since in the US Star Wars always gets released in May.

The screenplay still hasn't been green lit by Disney. If the Screenplay isn't "ready" there will be more delays. He also confirms casting still isn't completed. I'm curious to see what they say at this big Breakfast on Thursday, it could be a whole lot of nothing. ♫

Possibly ... Horn is visiting Abrams to see if anything can be dropped from the screenplay to help speed up production. Just the usual conflicts between the moneymen and film-makers. It'll all come out right in the rain.

    3. Or, being optimistic (and this is probably the better guess), Horn is in the UK because everything IS going well, and principal photography imminent, and is just double-checking that there are no more potential delays. He'll want assurances from the production team that all cast-members will be in place by a specific date so that a big press-release can be composed.

    2. Smarmy belittling of the criticisms of OT purists aside, this is true and will be more so every time a new movie is released from now on. But that's part of the fun of a new movie coming out; watching the new divisions and alliances form making a delicious case study for any *ologists out there trying to understand the complexities of human behavior.

      Delete
    3. The Prequels didn't fail because of minute criticisms. They failed to connect with a lot of people because of things like bad dialogue, wooden performances and CGI overkill.

Anakin was first an annoying child and then an arrogant, insecure and creepy teen who soon committed genocide in II before he murdered a group of children in III. Between him being a bad apple almost from the start to him and Obi-Wan often bickering and saying bad things about each other, I didn't care when their friendship came to a tragic end.

The story didn't make sense in a number of places. Why would the Jedi Council change their mind and agree to train Anakin if they had sensed bad things in him? Why would Anakin and Padme go off to Naboo, of all places, by themselves in order to avoid Padme being assassinated only to completely forget about that once they've reached their destination? Why would the Jedi Order and Republic use clone troopers they never authorized? Why are the Jedi Order and Republic portrayed as clueless fools who couldn't figure out that Palpatine was tricking them? They lacked even the most basic common sense needed to put things together. And so on.

However people may feel about them, the Prequels are just bad movies.

    4. I'd rather have the next Phantom Menace then the next Attack of the Clones.... It's ok to like the other ones, but episode 2 is objectively shit.

      Delete
    5. There are some real flaws in the prequels, but part of the problem is that George Lucas simply had a different vision from what the fans expected. For instance, the Jedi are MEANT to be very calm and restrained, keeping their passions in check to avoid the temptation of the Dark Side.

However, well-acted restraint was often perceived as the "wooden acting" of "boring characters". Quite possibly, Lucas hoped to create a comical contrast between the stuff-lipped, über-dignified Jedi and the clownish Jar-Jar. Compare the unlikely combination of a farmboy, a princess and a smuggler in the originals, and all the interesting interaction that follows when they have to adjust to one another. But juxtaposing Jar-Jar with Jedi sadly didn't work as well; the contrast became TOO great, and instead of interesting interaction we just got a "jaring" mishmash.

As for the frequent complaint about Anakin being revealed as a "whiny Emo kid" instead of an awesome Jedi warrior, one can speak of the "Luke effect": Just like Luke had imagined his father as a great hero, so the audience had their own ideas about what Anakin should be like, and screamed in horror (like Luke at Bespin) when the "truth" was revealed.

Plainly Lucas' vision for Anakin WAS that of a deeply conflicted, often confused and sometimes awkward young man -- exactly the kind of person that could fall prey to Sidious' machinations. Hayden Christensen delivered what Lucas wanted. (Let it be noted that Ian McDiarmid, almost universally hailed as the BEST actor in the entire franchise, has remarked that he feels Hayden's work was sadly underrated. Again, the real "problem" may seem to be that Lucas' Anakin does not agree with what the preconceived notions of some fans who had other ideas about what the character should be like.)

At least in hindsight, it should be obvious that when Obi-Wan described Anakin to Luke in such glowing terms, the old Jedi was 1) influenced by nostalgia for the "good old days" before the Empire and 2) trying to steer Luke onto the path of Jedihood by presenting him with a thoroughly sanitized image of what his father had been like. One might say that the following five movies are one long deconstruction of Obi-Wan's manipulative speech when he first met Luke!

    6. @ Cenindo

It wasn't just the Jedi who were wooden. Queen Amidala was mind-numbingly emotionless, as well as plenty of other PT characters.

Compare this to Ben and Yoda in the OT. They were wise characters with human emotions. Alec Guinness was able to provide a gentle warmth to Ben Kenobi that was far from being boring or irritating, and Yoda ranged from a light, comical character to one with wisdom, patience, peacefulness and conviction. He wasn't boring or clueless. I wish the PT Jedi were more like these two wonderful characters!

The PT characters in general were extremely boring, and Jar-Jar was extremely goofy and annoying. The OT characters, in general, were a lot less extreme. This is why they connected better each other and with audiences.

I don't need to rely on what Luke believed about his father. Ben Kenobi himself said that Anakin was a great starpilot, a cunning warrior and a good friend. Anakin and Obi-Wan never really spend that much movie time developing together as friends, and they argue and complain way too much about each other. PT Obi-Wan sometimes comes across like a jerk. I'm just glad he never treated Luke like that. I don't buy the idea that Anakin was accurately portrayed in the PT according to what we know of his backstory in the OT. Ben even called Anakin a good man in Ep. VI. A good man doesn't commit genocide on a group of sand people or behead an unarmed prisoner.

As important as lining up with the backstory is, the audience at least needs to care enough about Anakin as a character as well as his relationship with Obi-Wan in order to care about the consequences when things go sour. Anakin should've been a more ambitious version of Luke Skywalker of the PT who gradually turned to the dark side and betrayed all that he loved. Since we genuinely connected with him in Episode I as the hero of that movie, we are saddened to see his slow decent into evil. As it stands, I don't care about any of that because it was handled so stupidly.

      Delete
    7. I am not in any way arguing that the Prequel Trilogy is some kind of flawless cinematic masterpiece (nor is the Original Trilogy, for that matter). It is indeed a problem that "Anakin and Obi-Wan never really spend that much movie time developing together as friends".

According to the structure Lucas had in mind, Episode I was to be the "discovery" of miracle child Anakin; Episode II was to be about his romance with Padmé, and Episode III was to be the end of his friendship with Obi-Wan and his fall to the dark side.

See the problem? We should have had a FOURTH movie between either I and II or II and III, which would elaborate on "Anakin as Jedi Hero and Obi-Wan's Great Friend". But there was no room for that. The second movie had to be overwhelmingly about him connecting with Padmé.

Since only Douglas Adams felt free to produce "trilogies" with four or more parts, there simply was not enough cinematic time to elaborate on the Anakin/Obi-Wan friendship and "Anakin as hero". Those elements got shifted to the Clone Wars cartoon.

It was not an ideal solution, but having constrained himself to a "trilogy", what could Lucas do? Clearly he tries to remedy the situation by having Anakin and Obi-Wan refer to lots of unseen missions in their dialogue, in an attempt to establish that they are after all buddies and brothers in arms.

As for Amidala being stiff and emotionless, it is quite true, but that is to contrast her as much as possible with her far more human "handmaiden" Padmé and set up the surprise that they are one and the same. That does work out, but I agree that the (seemingly) frosty and super-formal queen does not really help Episode I in her own right. She comes off as a somewhat creepy character, not one we feel instantly able to sympathize with.

      Delete
    8. What could Lucas had done? Lucas could've constructed his PT around the backstory elements from the OT. Episode I was largely a waste of time, Episode II spent way too much time on Anakin and Padme's romantic subplot and Episode III mostly had Anakin and Obi-Wan separated again. I like how Han and Leia's romantic subplot is a lot smaller and fits well within the context of them being on the run from the Empire. It proved that an entire movie wasn't necessary to establish the connection. Had Anakin and Padme both started off as teenagers in Episode I, it would've made it much easier for them to fall in love in II after first going on adventures as friends.

If done properly, a fourth prequel movie wouldn't be necessary. It's a shame The Clone Wars was necessary to make up for what we didn't see in the PT. I like how Anakin was portrayed in this series a lot better. I wish we really got to see the Clone Wars in the PT, starting at the beginning of Episode I.

Another reason why I dislike the PT. In the OT, we actually get to see the gang grow closer as they go on adventures together. In the PT, they're more inclined to reference adventures we'll never get to see, not to mention that crucial ten years of training/friendship time that we miss between I and II.

I found Padme's reveal in Ep. I at least somewhat interesting, but it definitely isn't worth having to sit through that stiff dialogue each time I watch the movie.

Speaking of creepy, Anakin gives a number of creepy looks in II and III. He even gives a creepy one as a Force ghost in VI! 0_o

    2. I wonder if they'll be able to maintain their tight movie schedule. Considering how VII was already delayed 7 months, I'm willing to bet at least some of those movies will be pushed back.

  37. Here are some simple facts about the prequels. The acting of the anakin character in general is poor on both Lloyd and christiansen's behalf. Not to mention Padme. Also the dialogue written for them gave them no real chance to even attempt to improve their skills. Do not sugar coat these facrs with excuses about the alternate vision of George Lucas. There isn't one. Its just three poorly written executed scripts with some more established actors trying to do their best with subpar material and some nifty sword fights. I really think Lucas was more concerned with the latter and didn't know enough about directing actors to get the premise to succeed. By the second movie the damage was done. No other director had a hope of pulling it off. I was so excited about going to see episode one. And by the end of the first scene I knew it was a look lifeless mistake. I tried to convince myself to enjoy all of them. But. I honestly believe the clone wars as a series was far superior.
