UPDATE! ILM to Recreate Dagobah for One Episode of the Big Bang Theory Dedicated to Star Wars.

CBS' The Big Bang Theory is teaming with Lucasfilm for one Star Wars episode timed to Star Wars Day. They will re-create the planet Dagobah, with Bob Newhart slated to appear as one of the iconic characters from the franchise...

From THR:
In "The Proton Transmogrification" -- the episode set to air May 1 and timed to the annual May 4 Star Wars Day -- the gang gets together to celebrate the annual geek holiday, while Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is guided by visions of his childhood idol and mentor, Professor Proton (Emmy winner Bob Newhart), who appears to the socially challenged genius as his own Jedi master.

For the episode, the CBS comedy teamed with a group of special effects technicians from Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic to re-create Dagobah -- the remote world of swamps and forest that served as a refuge for Yoda during his exile -- and provide props for the episode, including a light saber. Lucasfilm experts consulted on the episode and visited the Big Bang Theory set to oversee the production, with the final touches completed at its San Francisco headquarters.

Newhart will appear as one of the iconic characters from the Star Wars universe during the episode -- though exactly which character he'll play is being kept under wraps.

Lucasfilm VFX guru Eddie Pasquarello was the on-set consultant for the episode and said it made sense for the company. "We at ILM were very excited to do the effects for it. Everyone loves the show there and to have the tie-in to May the Fourth felt like a good synergy and marriage. We jumped at it," he tells THR. "We did talk about what the set would look like and they sent us pictures of the light saber hilt and the Dagobah set and we were impressed. We talked about the interactive lighting for the light saber and some of the ideas that were there. They did an amazing job of getting it together."

The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on CBS. The Star Wars episode airs May 1.

UPDATE!

In a similar way The Goldbergs are also teaming with Lucasfilm for its upcoming Star Wars-themed episode, set to air May 6.

From THR:
As part of the tie-in, Lucasfilm partnered with studio Sony Pictures Television and ABC for the May 6 episode titled "A Wrestler Named Goldberg." Lucasfilm will help promote the episode in the lead-up to the broadcast.
The episode sees Adam (Sean Giambrone) and Erica (Hayley Orrantia) encounter elaborately costumed Star Wars fans, including Reno 911's Thomas Lennon, while waiting in line at the Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi opening.

I wonder if all this would lead to something. May the 4th is only a month away.

  2. any chance they are going to take advantage of this set they are recreating to use it in the next film? just seems like a prime chance to film a quick piece on a set that is already there and prime for using... i dunno just a thought... probably not...

  3. I still think Star Wars day should be May 25th: the day it was released. May 4th has no meaning other than being a lame pun.

    1. Yeah... And Christmas should be in August. Jeez...

    2. but we could very well get some official news/ cast confirmation on May the 4th, since it´s star wars day & shooting start not so long after that.

So then May 4th is better then 25th ;)

    3. don't bet on any news. Disney and Lucasfilm will disappoint us... yet again. Just plan on it.

  4. Oh good. Yet another Star Wars parody on TV!

Anyway, Community is a much better show...

  5. my 2 favourite things combined once again ! :) Maybe they are recreating the set also for some shots for ep.7 & having "Big Bang Theory" being the official reason?

  6. If Lucasfilm can avoid leaks until May 4th, that might be the day we get the big announcements. Its unlikely because shooting reportedly starts just 10 days after that. Either way, fuck them for making us wait so long for a confirmation of any single actor.

    1. They want us to be angry with anticipation. It's obviously part of their publicity campaign.

    2. I don't think so. If they want to announce the whole cast at once, and are supposedly still casting, then there's nothing they can do about it. They wouldn't risk holding onto the information and wait till it's leaked. They'll release it when it's ready, it's just not ready.

    3. it would be the ultimate gift on star wars day if they announced cast then, , if they don´t they will not be able to keep the secret much longer after that anyway, so hopefully the cast confirmation is only a month away :) & boooy have we waiiiiiteeeed....

  7. They're having a Star-Wars themed episode where they tie-in the name of the show with a WCW/WWE wrestler? Seems like a confusing choice and a bit of a waste given all the plays on Star Wars lines and themes that would be available to choose from.

    1. that would be very nice & a new way to announce things, also it gives disney/lfl a last opportunity to be mysterious, since it could just as well just be the big bang theory script :D hope they do it :)

    2. It's no more intelligent than saying "I love Princess Leia. she was hot in that golden bikini." And yes, many people talk like this.

    4. Fettman, I noticed that, too. It's kinda weird for someone so small. Not complaining, but it's disproportionate to the size of the rest of her.

    5. anon, wasn't trying to sound intelligent. Sometimes, you just gotta call it like ya see it.

    6. Anon, thanks for reminding me about the metal bikini. It may be rainy where I am and gloomy, but I'm smiling on the inside now. Thank you!

  10. I dislike the Big Bang Theory. Its humor is utterly predictable, no-brains, standard, lowest-common-denominator-type humor. It's a shame people mistake its repetitive "poke fun at nerds!" gag for nerdy humor.
