UPDATE! Official Press Release Regarding the New Star Wars Expanded Universe & More About Disney Publishing.

star wars

The official Star Wars site has just posted an article about the future and direction of the new Star Wars Expanded Universe and what to expect from it...

From StarWars.com:

For over 35 years, the Expanded Universe has enriched the Star Wars experience for fans seeking to continue the adventure beyond what is seen on the screen. When he created Star Wars, George Lucas built a universe that sparked the imagination, and inspired others to create. He opened up that universe to be a creative space for other people to tell their own tales. This became the Expanded Universe, or EU, of comics, novels, videogames, and more.

While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.

star wars

Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's direction, the company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development.

"We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon," said Kennedy. "We're set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before."

star wars

In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.

star wars

Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.

On the screen, the first new canon to appear will be Star Wars Rebels. In print, the first new books to come from this creative collaboration include novels from Del Rey Books. First to be announced, John Jackson Miller is writing a novel that precedes the events of Star Wars Rebels and offers insight into a key character's backstory, with input directly from executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman.

And this is just the beginning of a creatively aligned program of Star Wars storytelling created by the collaboration of incredibly talented people united by their love of that galaxy far, far away...

    1. That's just it, isn't it. They seem to be talking out of both sides of their mouth.

On the one hand they're saying the new films won't be beholden to the EU.

On the other hand they're saying that the EU won't be discarded.

      So which one is it?

    3. It's not a hard concept to grasp. They EU will not be included in actual Star Wars canon, but they'l continue writing material outside of the canon that's still attributed to Star Wars.

      Delete
    4. Actually, what they are saying is that while new content won't adhere established EU events and storylines, they will take elements from it here and there. But still, it's not that hard to understand.

    5. totally- it seems that the news is being reported poorly-

"While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded."

that tells me that characters could show up, or elements of characters in new characters- some sites are saying that the new star wars films will have "nothing" to do with the EU - well based on that quote above from the press release, that is a bold face lie-

    6. "It's not a hard concept to grasp. They EU will not be included in actual Star Wars canon, but they'l continue writing material outside of the canon that's still attributed to Star Wars."

FALSE. everything from here on out is canon. There will be nothing outside of canon.

    7. I don't get why people are drawing illogical conclusions from this release.

Anonymous @ 8:34 PM had it right.

      1) Former EU is not canon
      2) The former EU will be utilized for concepts when appropriate (i.e. "mined").
      3) Future EU WILL BE canon

      Delete
    8. It's hard to grasp, mainly because Disney/Lucasfilm haven't been articulating their position on the EU very effectively. Many statements and releases have been made which conflict one another, and vagaries are favored over specifics.

Base on all of the official announcements thusfar, we are presented with the following possibilities:

      1. Canon is whatever George Lucas says it is at any given moment.

      2. Canon is only the feature films. Would this include the Clone Wars feature that appeared in theaters?

      2. Canon is the feature films, the Clone Wars and Rebels TV show.

      3. Canon is anything that appears in film or television, cunbluding the feature films, the two Clone Wars animated series, the Rebels animated series, the Droids and Ewoks animated series, the two made for television Ewok movies, and the Holiday Special.

      4. Canon will be whatever Leland Chee of the Lucasfilm Story Group decides is canon.

      5. The EU will be used as inspiration for the on-screen canon.

      6. The EU won't be overwritten, but neither will it drive the new films.

      7. The post-ROTJ EU is essentially deleted, since Chewbacca's presence in Episode VII is likely.

      8. Some combination of the above.

    9. Personally, I think what it means is that Disney are going to pillage the EU for key scenes and characters and re-hash them instead of being creative and making new stuff. That's just lazy storywriting. Don't get me wrong, I'm hope I'm so far off the mark, but that's the instinctive impression that I get from this. :(

    10. @ juliusvernon:

absolutley, its super easy to see this - blog sites across the net are on the same page though - i'm in a discussion with someone who writes for collider who posted an article that says the new movies will have nothing to do with the EU....

that is false! they could be taking a lot of elements from the EU or they could take none, but the door is open to use the EU as a resource.

      Delete
    11. no one has said that they are taking anything from the EU. The only reason there is confusion is that some fans seem to think that unless an official Disney press release states that "the EU is a hateful scourge upon mankind and we will stop at nothing to stump it out." they will continue to assume that the movies will be film adaptation of the eu books.
they are never going to say the EU is worthless crap. even if they think it this should be obvious. Disney owns the eu material. to come out and say that not one bit of it is worth even considering as possible inspiration would be bad marketing to say the least. if it not clear by now that the new movie will be totally new and not EU stories with the names inexplicable jumbled around than it never will.

  6. Perhaps they might be persuaded to make a STAR WARS: Legends Movie - Thrawn. New actors as it is not cannon but still give us that great story we've wanted to see for years.

    ReplyDelete
  7. woop woop great news. Sorry to the butthurt EU fans but creating new films based from old stories that have already been told makes no sense whatsoever. You already have those stories, if you like them and want to experience them, then read them. The movieverse is completely different, and as Lucasfilm says put it, this will give "maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience." There's no point adapting a story that's already been told onto the big-screen when there's so much potential for something new for many people to grow up with. Stop living in the past and embrace the new. If you really demand for your books to be the only thing canon, then make it your own personal headcanon. Disney themselves said they aren't discarding it from existence. Please stop the whining.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First, not whining.Secondly, if there is a demand for something and you can supply that demand with little to no risk and make money, you do it. I didn't say it had to be a live action movie. Animated movie or show would do well.

      Delete
    2. right... cause marvel is failing at telling stories that have already been told...

  8. Well they are still going to use things from the EU so that is good. I honestly think the might use a lot of planets and Species from the EU but make new stories. A lot like how coruscant was used in the prequel trilogy. I also think that the best news is yet to come, all of this is just a confirmation of things we heard about awhile ago. Soon we will know the actors and before you know it we will be seeing the trailer.

    2. "I honestly think the might use a lot of planets and Species from the EU " absolutely - these headlines that read that EU is dead and won't be used are rubbish -

  9. Most of the EU, and especially post ROTJ EU, was garbage anyway.
I'll miss Shadows of the Empire, most of Thrawn trilogy (the ending with that Luke-clone thing wasn't good as the rest) and I always thought Force Unleashed (the first one, the second was aweful) was a good story for the Rebel Alliance's birth.
But I always felt the rest was not so starwarsish to deserve to be considered anyway. The emperor's clones, the yuuzhan vongs, chiewe's death, legacy... brrr. It makes me shiver just thinking about it.

I liked elements of the EU, like the Solo twins and the fact that one of them turns to the dark side. In fact, that is something I would keep. I'd make Mara Jade a lot younger, like she was a baby when the Emperor died, but he felt she was strong and decided to grow her like his faithful hand. With Vader gone, he connects to Mara and pushes her to join the new Jedi Order to fulfill his revenge against Luke. But she falls in love with Han's son and turns against Palpatine, deciding not to become a Jedi. The problem is that beeing so close to Jacen Solo allows Palpatine to reach him and turn him to the dark side. So his sister must strike him down in the end.

  10. I think this makes since. I've never been a big fan of the EU. Star Wars started on the screen and it should stay on the screen. Considering how big and convoluted the EU is for a screen writer to come up with a story that does not contradict some of it would be nearly impossible. So a decision had to be made to go forward without the restrictions of violating something. However I think they have made the point they will not abandon it and some plot points and characters may be usable in the future movies... So yes.... Chewie Lives.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's not staying on the screen. There will be a "new EU" and I'm sure everyone will universally like everything in it.

  11. Good riddance to bad fanfiction. As far as anything new goes, I won't consider that canon either. I honestly have a hard time keeping a straight face and saying that TCW and this new Rebels show count as canon too.

And 20 years down the road? All the comics and books that are yet to be published will be wisely jettisoned like the last batch.

I don't begrudge Disney making some money off it, they just shelled out 4 billion for the franchise so they want to keep the revenue coming in. 21. This all makes perfect sense.

The EU as we know it was all written when Lucas had no real plan to do SW sequels. That being the case, there was no real reason for LFL's publishing division to make sure that the EU books made any room for future movies or that they had anything to do with any story ideas that Lucas may have jotted down back when he had considered doing sequel films.

I bet that when the history of all this is written, we'll learn that Lucas truly didn't have any concrete plans or even general intentions to make a Sequel Trilogy until it came time to sell LFL. I'd bet you dollars to dianoga doo that whatever story concepts he gave to Disney were compiled at the last minute to sweeten the pot for the sale.

So again, it makes complete sense that they'd throw out the existing EU as far as continuity with the new movies is concerned. It's a whole new ballgame now, and the last thing Disney/LFL wants is to limit their filmmakers to retelling stories that have already been published as novels.

But the one thing that so many EU fans mention about the existing EU is still, in its way, part of Disney/LFL's priorities - a cohesive story that encompasses the films and the EU. Only, it's going to be a different EU that now leaves room for new films with their own unique stories and characters.

And y'know, this new EU may absolutely stink. Like a lot of others here, I always felt that the EU from the past 25 years or so was spotty at best. A few things were pretty cool, but a lot of it just didn't seem like it'd work so well if translated to a movie - and that's how I've always viewed Star Wars, first and foremost as a cinematic story.

It's possible that the new EU stories will be spotty and of questionable quality in their own way, despite their continuity with the movies. Or, we could be in for more hits than misses. Who can tell at this point?

But I can absolutely see why they want to hit the reset button on the EU and maybe use the old stuff as a source for ideas and concepts.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Brilliant. The only reason that fanfiction was published was because there wasn't a sequel so they had to compensate somehow. Now we are going to finally get the sequel.

  24. JJ Ahbrams and Lucasfilm said from the very beginning these would be original stories. That is not hard to understand. Personally I tried to get beyond the Zahn books but it was difficult. The books never really caught the spirit of the original trilogy. I never bought into the idea of Luke and Jade. I thought the "Tales of the Jedi" comics had some great ideas. I guess I'm not a comic guy. I'm glad they are not doing expanded universe. I'm tired of hearing about it.

    3. I read all the time and I still have the common sense to know that the EU is not true star wars. It's been explained hundreds of times that the EU is fake. It's a separate expanded universe, hence the abbreviation of the name EU. They would be mad to turn the fake star wars universe into the main universe. This is not a complicated concept. Watching TV or reading has nothing to do with anything and just proves you haven't got an argument because you're talking about utter nonsense.

  29. I think this is great news. This allows the writers to use elements like the clone vats from Heir to the Empire, or a brilliant Grand Admiral from the same series. It provides opportunity for clones of the Emperor, or Darth Vader, or even Obi Wan Kenobi to appear as antagonists in the new canon. Chewie may be alive and well in the new film but his death to save someone may be coming in a feature film. Basically its going to be the same cereal, just in a different box. Heir to the Empire, Dark Empire, and the Jedi Academy books were some of my favorites growing up and I would love to see elements from them. The Vong war was O.K. but I never could really connect with those books.. How awesome would it be if they used the Vong war concept but substituted Mandalorian's for the agressor's. There are so many possibilities I am excited to see what they do with it. The EU was good and it served its purpose: it kept the Star Wars universe alive and well and quenched fan's thirst for new material. Now we'll see the feature film interpretations of what has happened after Return of the Jedi.

  31. As someone who, after so many years keeping up with all that's going on with these movies and has come to only consider the original movies in their original presentation canon, I feel sympathy for the EU fans here as I have shared your pain in the past with the Special Editions, the PT, and the EU it self. Lucas is somewhat to blame for creating that tiered cannon system in the first place. Now that he is not steering the ship any more, only now are you presented with the holistic "canon" you thought you had all along. May I suggest you do as I have done, recognize the Star Wars universe is not real and only exists now to make Disney money and so call it Disney Canon and accept or refuse whatever you like as the real cannon for you personally. In other words be post modern about it like so many people treat religion these days.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I feel bad for the EU fans here as but happy that the things they have bought into for all these years haven't been disregarded completely. That wouldn't be fair to them as they have done nothing wrong by getting involved and enjoying something that was presented as part of the Star Wars Universe despite its level of 'canon'

I think the hatred and lack of respect for people on this site has gotten too much and too personal at times for something so trivial and for something that nobody had any conclusive evidence of which way this would have gone. Even now I don't think people really understand how this is going to work so the comments here are contradicting each other again. Until some official story lines and characters are confirmed I don't believe anyone outside of Disney will know how much things will change

As I said before, all the EU fans have done is enjoyed something that is Star Wars and was presented as Star Wars and now there's a chance that this will be considered a lesser part of all that is Star Wars. The words 'fan fiction' get thrown about here but what kind of huge franchise would chose to sell a 'fan fiction' version of itself on its official website it there wasn't large validity to it being a respected part of the franchise (starwars.com)?

There will be new Disney Star Wars books, but who's to say these will be any better than the old books? If all the EU haters now go and support these new non movie parts of the franchise is that out of spite towards the original EU fans? Why would people support these new books and not the old ones?

I'm impartial by the way, so I'm not with either party here but I find that the enjoyment out of visiting this site to hear news and to enjoy reading what others are thinking about the whole saga is diminished by the hate that's posted. It doesn't need to be like that and I'm not expecting one post to change that but it does become tiring to read such negativity over what is only speculation until the official news comes out. Everything is still very vague but we know there'll be real news coming!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think what they're looking at doing is mining ideas from the expanded universe literature, then tweaking them a bit so they don't have to owe credit to the likes of Timothy Zahn and Drew Karpyshyn, why bother changing the name of the Sith home-world from "Korriban" to "Moriband"?...

On another note, I'd love to see Dave Filoni and the team behind "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" make some stand alone movies, I just finished the Darth Bane novels, I think each book could easily be condensed into 80 minute CG movie... Darth Bane was after all acknowledged in the last episodes of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars"... however... that story might be a bit too dark for a Disney license...

I do not understand why they kill SWTOR and rest which does not interfere with movies. But it's their's choice. My choice is how I want to spend my money and my time. 38. I think it's cool that Rebels is making use of the Imperial Security Bureau (IBS). I don't remember if he created the concept, but I remember the IBS from Zahn's Allegiance and Choices of One novels. I thought it was a cool concept. I have read many EU novels and I have enjoyed most of them. I have no intention of burning my current collection just because they are no longer canon. What happens in the future can't take away the enjoyment I had reading them. I was entertained. That was the point. That being said, I fully embrace the new direction. Some of the EU stories were not that great anyway. Some were awesome. I think it's great that they are moving forward with new and fresh material. The EU is a huge source to have at their disposal and I'm sure they'll draw from the really cool elements of it. I am actually really excited that new novels are in the works, especially Heir to the Jedi. Don't know what it's about yet, but it looks really cool and it seems as if it may be the first post ROTJ novel that is part of the new canon. Can't wait!

  39. Viral already posted an article about this a while ago -- character descriptions from the EU may turn up in the new canon assigned new names and origins (IE Mara Jade.) We may see 3 children in Episode 7 what we once knew as Jacen and Jaina Solo as well as Ben Skywalker. The description may remain while their names may change. Chewie lives!!! All this negates the EU post ROTJ and is a pretty simple concept to grasp.

  40. So this is how EU dies..... with thunderous applause. I spent years falling in love with the EU to have it torn away in the blink of an eye. I never thought I'd say this but I'm done with Star Wars. I'll let my kids, who are now confused and upset too, decide for themselves. All that money we spent on books, comics and toys ripped away from us. That's Hollywood for you. They only care about themselves and money. Not mine anymore.

    1. im confused. what has change? disney is only confirming what has been the position GL all along. and its not unique to star wars. lots of franchises have book comic books and games made about them and no one thinks that all subsequent movies are beholden to them. why should it be different for sw? this weird idea you people have that episode 7 is supposed to be a film adaptation of eu books comes from nowhere but your own imagination

    2. Nothing has changed at all. It's just confirming that the films and EU are desperate and so the films wont be based on it. In fact they are expanding on the EU with more books and more comics and games etc etc. Your books are not being discarded.
"While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded."
Why are people STILL overreacting over literally nothing?

    3. People have been longing for a sequel to Episode VI for over 30 years. The EU allows millions the opportunity to explore post-RotJ stories with many of our beloved heroes.

When you've become so attached to this stuff only to have it OFFICIALLY declared non-canon, it's a painful experience. I sure hope the ST is able to win over these heartbroken fans with all the changes to the timeline.

  41. Also KOTOR is still canon! They only said that post-Return of the Jedi EU is non-canon. KOTOR, SWTOR, and The Force Unleashed still count as canon.

    1. until they decide to make stand alone movies that contradict pre jedi EU

    2. But that hasn't happened yet, it's still canon for now.

  42. If any of the film makers have read EU material, their including elements of it in canon is inevitable. It's all psychological.

  43. I find all this utterly fascinating.

As of April 25, 2014, Star Wars only consists of Episodes 1-6 and Star Wars: The Clone Wars CGI film and TV series.

Suddenly it is a much smaller galaxy out there, and quite a managable one.

  44. The massive amount of infighting is beyond pathetic. All the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the EU as being considered non canon is ridiculous. For people to say that they have wasted their money on books and graphic novels is bizarre to say the least. If you like reading something then embrace it. Don't let somebody tel you that it does not fit into a certain story line put you off of those things you like to read. Ignore what they say and just get on with what you love to read. And by the way I'm not an EU fan, I prefer the films.

    1. I'm not a big EU fan. I haven't read any of the books, but I am interested in saving a number of characters, planets, storylines, etc. if they're good enough.

Anyway, the wailing and gnashing of teeth isn't ridiculous because people don't like getting emotionally involved in things that don't matter. This goes beyond some stranger on the Internet telling them the EU isn't canon. Many fans have, unfortunately, become emotionally involved in the EU's stories, hoping to eventually see some of it translated onto the big screen. Now it's clear that this isn't going to happen. It sucks for them.

Hopefully whatever we get in the ST will be as good if not better than the EU, but right now it's pain time.

    2. I don't see how it's unfortunate to become attached to Star Wars and the EU.. It's been a important part of our free time for years.. Reading, re-reading, waiting for new releases... If Chewbacca isn't important to you or your childhood ect. you probably shouldn't be on this site and for EU fans the same goes for the characters that we've been with for 20 years..

I can't say I'm happy at the moment, but I'm willing to hold judgment until I actually see the ST and I'm actually kind of excited for the new Tarkin book..

  45. It's a tricky dilema with the EU, I think the problem is there were too many books written making it too difficult for continuity with all the films. It would take years to sort through, to make sure that it all tied up. Although I love the films and clone wars l've read some books and there are some good elements that should not
    just be discarded completely.

  47. All I can say about this announcement is that they have taken a bit of brilliance from Marvel and D.C. by saying that there is a cannon but allowing the expansion by acknowledging the possibility of the multiverse theory. Marvel universe is cannon but Marvel EU is the multiverse and D.C. the same. This allows for other brilliant minds to add to amazing stories and characters.
At least LFL/Disney is not limiting all creativity strictly to those they hire and filter. They are allowing those that love the stories to immerse themselves into it and add to it.
I say that I can appreciate it all and am excited that more movies are being made and cant wait to see what new novels will be sparked from them. I hope Star Wars never dies and that those that create all the movies and novels continue to give me new and exciting things to discover and look forward too.

  49. the films are the films , everything else is everything else.
events in one dont have to and shouldnt have to affect the other.
why should films that lots are going to enjoy be limited by events that these people are never going to know or care about..
