From Star Wars to Jedi: Making of a Saga & Star Wars Storyboards Videos.

star wars

On Every Wednesday the official StarWars youtube page will post a classic documentary clip about the making of the Original Trilogy. From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga is the classic documentary chronicling the creation of the original Star Wars trilogy. Narrated by Mark Hamill, it features rare behind-the-scenes footage from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and is officially available on YouTube for the first time. Hit the jump for part 1 of 9 as well as a trailer for the new book Star Wars Storyboards...

From youtube:
In part 1 of From Star Wars to Jedi, Hamill explains the main plot of the saga and the story of Luke Skywalker, a Tatooine farmboy who discovers his Jedi destiny. On his journey across the galaxy, Luke would confront evil in the form of Darth Vader, Sith Lord; learn from Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda; and discover both the dark side and light side within himself. Princess Leia, Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and other companions would join Luke -- but he would face the ultimate villain, the Emperor, alone.
Filming of the original Star Wars began in Tunisia in 1975, with George Lucas serving as writer/director; Irvin Kershner helmed The Empire Strikes Back; and Richard Marquand was behind the camera for Return of the Jedi. As seen in the video, Lucas was heavily involved in all the films, including effects sequences like the Death Star attack and Hamill's costume fitting from Return of the Jedi. In an interview, Lucas explains that creating the world in A New Hope was a big hurdle. With that done, he was free to tell bigger and better stories with its sequels...

In related news check out the trailer of the new book Star Wars Storyboards!
Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy, edited by Lucasfilm's J.W. Rinzler, features the storyboards -- many never before seen -- from all three classic films.
Coming from Abrams Books on May 13, 2014, Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy collects over 1,200 storyboards for the first time ever. As seen in this debut trailer, they were an essential part of the filmmaking process, helping visualize A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi -- including the Death Star trench run, the Battle of Hoth, and Luke Skywalker's final duel with Darth Vader and the Emperor.
Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy features a foreword by Joe Johnston, an introduction by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, and exclusive commentary by Joe Johnston, Nilo Rodis-Jamero, Alex Tavoularis, Paul Huston, and Dave Carson.

  2. My dream is Saoirse Ronan and Lupita Nyong’o duelling with lightsabers on a desolate plateau at night with the light of double moons bathing them with an eerie glow and the Millennium Falcon landed in the background.
My nightmare is either of them duelling with Jar Jar Binks!

I find this comment to be in poor taste.

  3. That's really cool... never seen these before! Interesting when watching them talk about the space battle near the moon of Endor... seeing as it happens the moment they make decisions regarding what we actually see... hell yeah!

  4. I would rather have the video of the storyboards like they are presented here as an anamatic rather then yet another Star Wars art book.

  9. I've got this documentary.

The most interesting thing about the documentary 'From Star Wars to Jedi', is the fact that in the narration Mark Hamill refers to Darth Vader as a "Sith Lord", this doco' is from 1983, a lot of people think that the idea of "The Sith" was made up just for the prequel trilogy.

    2. I wonder where the OT 80's fans had references to dark Jedi as being "sith"? Was there maybe some star wars art book that labeled them as sith?

    3. Hell, even the original Topps Star Wars cards called Vader "Dark Lord of the Sith."

It was never explained what the Sith were, and it was certainly never posited that ALL dark side uses were Sith. In fact, I don't recall that term ever even being applied to the Emperor. It was merely a mysterious title that Vader held.

But yeah, Dark Lord of the Sith was a phrase that was around from the very beginning.

    4. He's called Dark Lord of The Sith in the original novelisation of episode IV. Palpatine is also mentioned by name in the prologue of the book...I didn't realise until I read it that the Emperor had always been called Palpatine

    5. Yeah, and that was back when Lucas had a different concept for Palpatine entirely. He was originally to have been more of a feckless victim of circumstance and something of a hermit. A figurehead leader who was manipulated by those within the Empire who sought true power, rather than the grand puppetmaster that Lucas later turned him into.

In fact, I'm not even sure I got the impression in reading the ANH novel (it's been so long ago) that Palpatine was even supposed to have had any Force powers in that early incarnation.

      Interesting how things change!

    6. No mention of force powers for Palpatine at all. As much as I love Star Wars it's funny to see how worked up people are getting over the story for Ep VII and how they hate the EU etc when it's so clear to see that Lucas just made the whole thing up as he went along and basically just 'lucked out' that it turned out so fantastic. Could have easily gone the other way
