From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (Part 3 of 9).

In part 3 of From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga, narrator Mark Hamill details the creation of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi's giant, slug-like crime lord: Jabba the Hutt...

From StarWars (youtube):
The early designs for Jabba didn't quite hit the mark. According to George Lucas, the first design was too human; the second was too snail-like; the third was just right. Jabba became the most complex puppet ever constructed for a movie. His head neck accommodated two main puppeteers, while other operators were placed elsewhere in his body; the gangster's eyes and facial muscles were radio-controlled. Stuart Freeborn oversaw the creation of Jabba, who took three months and close to half a million dollars.

Jabba was originally supposed to be in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and a scene was shot featuring a human male standing in for the role -- as seen in this video. The creature was to be super-imposed, but the sequence was left unfinished. When it came time to use Jabba in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, Lucas took the opportunity to redesign and improve the character.

  1. Yeah...so then they created something that makes absolutely no sense to be the boss of anybody. How would hutts or whatever the species is called ever rise to power in a galaxy full of much more capable species. You know...ones with legs, mobility...non-T-Rex arms...stuff like that. I never understood this.

    1. The same for the use of Huttese. So, apparently, the Chancellor can understand Huttese spoken by one of his underlings.

    2. because it's a high tech galaxy... a species need not be mobile. It's ultimately something left up to mystery but if you want to work out the logic I'd say that they are a very smart species that have influence over others. Lets put it this way... they are smart enough to avoid Jedi mind tricks.

  2. I liked Jabba because we had never seen a giant slug like that before on film and seeing his giant tongue at Leia was something else. lol Oh he was nasty.

    1. Sure he was iconic, and perhaps it makes alright sense for one of his species to be an overlord, maybe he just worked his way up with capable underlings or something. But in TPM it clearly shows that the Hutt race is in charge of like all of Tatooine, which I can't buy.

    2. Well a good section of tattooine at least, none of the planets in Starwars seam to have as complex political infrastructure as earth (except coruscant).

    3. I've read that the Hutts control a system of planets and are notoriously wealthy, malicious individuals. I'm guessing they came to power the same way Al Capone became a gang lord. That guy was massive too!

    3. The caps rule was targeted at one specific anonymous poster who was trolling. No problems using it.

  4. OK. Now that we have gotten the Jabba thing done, let's get to Plagueis and a possible conection with Anakin. I'm not saying its the plot for part 7, just trying to figure out why Lucas would put them scenes in about a dark lord sith having the power to create life and prevent death. Lucas always has a reason for things.

  5. Excatly. I watched episode 3 again and after thinking about it, i think DP was the one who created Anakin. It would make sense. He was always cranky, moody, it was like the dark side was slowly consuming him. I do not believe in my heart that a so called chosen one who ends eveil, would do evil. That makes no sense at all. Any fans that say its ok to do bad things , kill kids at a Temple, and betray the Jedi just so later he can save his son and all the sudden be declared as a chosen one has watched too many zombie and vampire movies and are just plain sick in the head. And who ever argues saying the Jedi Temple was corrupt needs to watch the PT again. Nothing was wrong with the Jedi or the councils until Palpatine took over as the chancelor. Then all hell broke loose.

    1. It's actually quite simple. There never was a chose one. It was simply a jedi myth, and Palpatine simply told Anakin what he needed to hear to turn him to the Darkside. There, that's that.

    2. Anakin was the chosen one...he did bring balance to the force...think about it

  6. No no no Anon 9:38..... We were told about the Jedi prophecy in ep1 and 3. The reason why it wasnt said in ep 4,5 and 6 is because by then we already knew about it. Of course the release dates in order was weird with ep 4,5 and 6 coming before 1,2 and 3 but when you watch it all in order of the episodes from 1 to 6, by the time we get to ep 4 we now know whats going on. There is a chosen one but it wasnt Anakin. Why else would Lucas put the legend of Plagueis and his ability to create life and prevent death ? Palpatine didnt know how to do those things even when he said that he learned everything from him before he killed him in his sleep. Of course killing someone who can prevent death is a mystery and makes you wonder if he really is dead. But who knows. What we all know for a fact is that the saga has always revolved around the Jedi fighting the Sith. Theres more sith to come, the sith planet, and other things. So if the sith are still out there, and there is evil fighting still in the galaxy, then the chosen one hasnt arrived yet. It's very simple math if you use your brain.
