Star Wars Bits: Daisy Ridley Not Playing Jaina? Boyega's Dad Joins the Cast. Mara Jade added to SW Miniatures and More.

star wars

Hit the jump for a collection of some small and not so small Star Wars bits from the last few days...

First let's start with three interesting tweets.

star wars

The first tweet is from Daisy Ridley. It's in response to someone who put on IMDb Jaina Solo as the character who Ridley will play in Episode 7.

I'm actually surprised that she would make such big hint. Obviously if she was indeed playing Jaina she would have never said anything because of the NDA. The other option is that this is a misdirection but I highly doubt it. Personally I really don't care if she would be called Jaina or something else. The character is what matters not the name.

John Boyega revealed that his father will also appear in Episode 7. Most likely a background extra or something.

Many people assumed he was talking about Lando, so he clarified.

Domhnall Gleeson has been spotted in London.

I don't know for sure if we'll see Jade in Rebels or Episode 7, but I'm sure that one way or another she will be official Canon in the future. It might be a book, a spin-off or other movie but she will be...

And speaking about Jade, it looks Latino Review liked our speculation article from a few days ago and revealed that they also heard some of the things we told you about. For their piece click here

spin-off

Gareth Edwards briefly spoke with THR about the first spin-off movie.
Asked to explain his astonishing career arc -- going from an indie sci-fi feature for $500,000, 2010’s Monsters, to rebooting one of the great monster creations, Godzilla, and now doing a Star Wars spinoff -- director Gareth Edwards said: “If I was in the audience at film school, looking at me now, I would hate me. I never could have predicted it this way.”
“I am very, very lucky, living in a dream job at the moment. I’m not allowed to talk about it, it’s all very secretive, but it’s a dream come true. Star Wars is the reason I got into filmmaking, so to be given this opportunity is like a dream,” he said. “Now the pressure is on.”

  2. Daisy Ridley Not Playing Jaina?

No, she isn't. Because Jaina doesn't exist. This endless EU worship and denial is getting old guys. It's over. It was nothing more than a 20 year cash grab by Lucasfilm. Also, most of those books sucked. Let's look to the future.

I'd like to once again refer everyone to the announcement Lucasfilm made in April:
    https://starwars.com/news/the-legendary-star-wars-expanded-universe-turns-a-new-page.html

It's not even called "The EU" anymore - it's called "Legends" ... moving on...

    3. It would be completely foolish to ignore all of the EU, except everything from Yuuzhan Vong forward, which i guarantee is the main EU elements they are trying to avoid and remove from star wars the most.

      Delete
    4. The EU is NOT dead- however it is not what people want it to be- anything can be picked and plucked from EU material to be included in new material - once it is added to something new it will then be canon. So the EU is very much so NOT dead dead. It says it right in that press release.

    5. The brain dead EU is kept in a perpetual coma so that its organs can be harvested as desired.

btw, we don't "worship" the EU. The definition of "worship" goes to you OT freaks and how the simple mention of midichlorian is enough to make your head blow up and scream.

    8. different anon speaking - the less they use of the EU the better. it had some decent stories but it's time to move in a different direction.

It makes sense that Han and Leia would have some kids but they don't need to be the same kids as they were in the EU books. Time to tell a different story. Hopefully a better one.

    9. there are lots of EU Star Wars books and lots of stories and characters. I know It's not canon but i think some stories and characters from new trilogy or rebels will introduce similar situations and then they will be canon: mara jade, solo kids... and so on. I think it's not a big problem. Enjoy all stories they will bring to us...

    12. Jaina Solo had a fork put in her with the EU announcement and it cemented that as being the case. Those stories are old and it's time for something new. It amazes me that so many EU fans want to re-fry old stories and characters as if nobody has the mental capacity to think up something different that could actually be better, it's not like the bars that high with most of EU stuff out there.

    3. Exactly. I liked the Thrawn trilogy and duality. The Bane trilogy was pretty good and some other good singles along the way, with a lot of terrible ones thrown in, including all the Yuzhon Vong thing.

But this it awesome, now they will have new movie connections and can do a whole lot of new books now. They doubled our material. I also bet at some point they continue the "legends" and that story line too. But who really cares if the EU are canon? They weren't conceived by Lucas, and whatever your opinion of the PT, he has more imagination than any of those authors.

  8. "NO LEGENDS CONTENT WILL EVER BE USED AGAIN!"

Did any of you guys even read the Legends announcement? They said that even though the old EU isn't canon anymore, they specifically noted that writers are welcome to reintegrate content into the new canon - which is what they did for "The Clone Wars". Bear in mind that George Lucas largely disregarded a lot of the old EU with the exception of multimedia projects like "Shadows Of The Empire", "The Force Unleashed", and "The Thrawn Trilogy". Technically speaking, not a whole lot has changed.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Forget everything about the EU. Those books have about as much influence on the official movies as the dire trek novels have on the Star Trek movies. The new movies will be a breath of fresh air and not a rehash of weak characters written in generally weak novels that resorted to cheap tricks like killing off Chewbacca.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What do you mean by cheap trick? People die in wars. If Han Solo dies in Episode VII, would you call that a "cheap trick?"

      Delete
    2. I have no problem with major characters being killed off if it serves the story in a dramatic way. Too may characters have been killed off in stories just for shock value, with no real purpose to it. In my opinion the Vector Prime novel did this (hence the "cheap trick"). When Vector Prime was released there was some controversy over whether the character was killed to boost interest and sales and I believe this was the case. I read the book for exactly that reason and was ultimately disappointed by it. There were rumors that the writers wanted a list of characters they could kill with Luke Skywalker being at the top!
As for Han Solo dying in Episode VII, that's a decision between Abrams, Ford and Disney. It could be in Ford's contract. Since there is already enough worldwide interest in Episode VII, the death of a major character just to build public anticipation is not required.
So yes people die in wars. If Solo is one of them I hope they get it right. Some fans will be outraged, some will accept it.

    3. Is Cheap Trick doing the sound track for new Star Wars like they did for the Heavy Metal movie? Cool beans!!!!

  10. The name of the game is not Star Wars: Miniatures. It is Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. Its all starships, not to be confused with the old Star Wars Miniatures from Wizards of the Coast. Yes, there will be a card for Mara Jade. However, recently they also came out with Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors, and Wave 5 (the one in question) also includes Ysane Isard and Dash Rendar. This does not indicate that they are or will be canon. They aren't telling new stories about them, they're just making game pieces. Its not the same thing at all.

    1. Sounds like a test bed of some best of characters from EU...Kyle, Dash and Mara. Perhaps part marketing experiment. If Shadows of the Empire, multimedia and merchandizing experiment by Lucas did not pan out as well as it did, he might not of started Prequels. No Prequels could have ment no Sequels. Hope some of the EU that had fit well, survives.

  11. Just because they EU is dead doesn't meant that they wont take parts of it to use, it would be foolish to abandon ALL EU elements, the prequels did this in most cases and the fans hated it. I do not think that Disney is as foolish as good old George.

I have said it many times, the more of the EU they choose to include the better, WITH THE EXCEPTION of anything including/past Yuuzhan Vong, who knows what people where thinking with that crap.

Even in the prequels you see a few EU thing, sadly not enough and a story that completely overwrites some of the good things EU created.

    1. AnonymousJune 14, 2014 at 9:25 PM,

Your comment is so contradictory that it's hilarious, lol.

Lucas did use plenty of EU elements (Coruscant, Quinlan Vos, etc.) in the PT. He didn't abandon "ALL EU elements" completely.

As for the Vong, by your logic, then I say Luke should NEVER be married, and there should be NO Mara Jade or Ben Skywalker either, simply because I think that was the stupidest crap that anyone could ever think of. And if your opinion on the Vong has so much weight only b/c how you feel about them, then my own opinion (or that of any other fan) is just as valid.

And finally, suggesting that the PT was not to most fans' liking (I am not one of them, btw, except for Ep. II) only because it didn't feature enough of the EU is not only ridiculous; it's also a matter of opinion and not fact.

In that sense, I could easily say that using too many EU things in the ST would be MAJOR mistake, for that matter. At least in my case, this is backed by fact, since most EU things are crap.

  15. Pretty sure the part of the EU/Legends announcement that said "writers can choose elements from the EU to include as part of the new canon was just Lucasfilm being nice to all the poor fans who still want to believe that those books mattered.

The point is, they've said MANY times that they are starting fresh here. That means AND I CAN GUARANTEE that there will be no Ben Skywalker, no Jacen and Jaina Solo, etc. and thank God there won't be because those books were cheap sic-fi novels written by cheap paperback sci-fi writers with horrible ideas like the Yuuzhan Vong. Those stories are worth less than what a used copy of those books cost today.

Star Wars was never about contrived Sci-Fi storytelling, although the EU books devolved into that pretty fast. There's a reason Lucasfilm made the announcement that the EU would no longer be canon and it wasn't so they can give you a Mara Jade cameo in an upcoming film. It's so they could distance themselves from all the dreck that was spewed into those books for 20 years. Star Wars is and always has been about a Fantasy Space Opera in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

I love this site, visit it every day, but lets focus on Episode VII news and not what a small minority of EU fans wish would happen, but won't.

    4. @ Anon 11;50 -- respect what you are saying, but the sad facts are... The EU gained whatever fan following it had because there was nothing better, meaning a film. Now there will be.

      Delete
    5. ^Ah, then there should be no point in writing Star Wars books today, as there are now films to fill in the gaps.... and yet, supplementary material is still being written. The only difference is that the stuff now is called "canon" for Disney's approval and the stuff of yesturday is now being rejected. This has nothing to do with the quality of the stories written. btw, many of the EU novels were actually done pretty good.

We don't know what's happening, it is stupid to give yourselves such massive, unfounded hope that is in direct conflict with the official new canon policy. It's of course a given that old EU elements will eventually be adapted, similar to how bits and pieces of things from comic books are used in comic book films, but this continuing delusion that these new films will somehow magically be able to perfectly-re-use old EU character is desperate.

I'm apparently one of the few fans who actively want NO EU elements to be overtly adapted right now. I want the filmmakers to try something truly unique, not a hodgepodge of different stories mixed in a bizarre soup that fails to feel innovative. "Aayla Secura was originally created for the Expanded Universe by artist Jan Duursema and writer John Ostrander... After seeing a piece of cover art of the final character, George Lucas decided to place her in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, making Secura one of the few C-canon characters that made it into the films."

While I couldn't find similar information for Boba Fett, the point still stands.

      Delete
    8. You are correct on Aayla Secure, that was original mentioned in the star wars insider.
But Boba was a marketing introduction through Holiday Special to generate buzz. To argue the validity of canon at this point in time is pointless.
We can all just compare the finished films for Continuity and we can argue about a film series we all love and will continue to watch.

      Delete
    9. Same guy here. I don't believe Lucas was really very involved with the Holiday Special, which is part of the reason he hates it so much in addition to it being awful. What I was just saying was that just because it starts on a lower level of canon doesn't mean it can't be integrated into canon eventually. As it stands, Star Wars now has two levels of canon - official works, and non-canon (Legends) that may or may not be refit for the canon. I'm guessing that the people writing "Rebels" are going to have a field day bringing characters like Thrawn and Xizor into the mix.

But, I do hope that the "Jedi Way" as the douche bag above me put it comes to an end with the New Jedi Order. Jedi should definitely be aloud to form attachments and Lucas planned and officially stated several times in the 80s that Luke would have a companion. I doubt it will be 'Mara Jade' though. But I do not doubt that she will be a strong willed Jedi Knight. I also believe that Domhnall Gleeson will be the son of Luke Skywalker. I mean c'mon, look at him! I also hope that the new trilogy will contain many Sith. The rule of two is dumb. I want to see an army of Sith on the big screen! I want to see a war.
JJ will not let us down. I guarantee it! So quit your whining and griping and go get a job.
Sit back and enjoy the film when it comes out. Or join an emo band and write an album about how much you hate the movie.

SOTE was Dec 1996, and the Special editions were well underway at that point (ANH released Jan 1997).

      Just sayin'...... ;)

    2. Who brought Star Wars back to life post-2005 (when ROTS was released?)

    3. Actually, defending a series of books, comics, videogames and the like—which not even their own creators took seriously—so irrationally is the true immature, nerdish youngster thing to do.

True adult SW fans from the 1977 Ep. IV generation moved on to real literature a long time ago. We left SW for the films, where it belongs.

  31. Ok, if everything going forward is canon, it looks like the new Join Us or Die LCG expansion is making "Winter." Leia's childhood friend, canon. If she is, I can imagine Mara Jade isn't far behind.

    1. Both Characters are excellent. Lucas Loved The Zahn trilogy and with another EU project Lucas said if he had Shadows of the Empire in the 80's he would have filmed it. But in hindsight isn't that always the case.
To see winter realized on screen would be cool.

    Eu is dead, DEAD!!!!

No Jania, no Mara Jade. They are EU, and EU is not canon any more. Live with it...

      EU is dead.

They already said that characters from EU wont be in any star wars movie.

Some new character will maybe have some similar elements of personality as some EU character, but that is it.

Names will be different, their stories will be different, even their gender and numbers.

Live with it. Like they confirmed only EP 1-6, TCW, new Rebels series and sequel trilogy are canon.

    5. And future books etc will be canon..

    3. That is just a game, it is not part of canon.

Canon are only SW EP 1-7, TCW, Rebels and future movies.

They already confirmed that EU characters are not in movies.

    4. They have NEVER said EU characters are not in the movies. Everything from here on out in canon, previous stuff not including the movies, TCW, Rebels and the Darth Maul comic are Legends. If you see it out now, and it doesn't have the Legends branding (meaning it's a re-issue) it's supposed to be canon.
To stress again, it has NEVER been said there will be no EU characters in the movies....at least not by Lucasfilm...I'm sure some EU haters say that.

    5. According to Disney CEO Iger stating about star wars having worlds in the thousands and about the vast wealth of characters, the numbers he states are greater than what is in the movies. So I took what he said as considering the plethora of characters already established. They all may not be concrete but it is like Disney walked down the street and said hey George wanna sell your toys? And the reps of the Company, current Lucasfilm creators and all involved will pick out some or tinker with them, Perhaps even as far as Sid that creepy kid in Toy Story that kitbashed his toys.

Lucasfilm, do us a favor and announce what one of the spinoffs will be, please. We need a new topic.

    1. It's funny how people are so harsh towards an important character as Mara Jade, and yet fanboy geeks want a boba fett spinoff movie? What exactly did Boba Fett do that was so great, besides freeze Han Solo?

    2. I do not want Boba Fett movie, and i hate all this EU talk. It is pathetic.
      EU is over. Move along.

    3. The EU will be incorporated into the films as adaptations, most likely. So Mara Jade is possible as are many others. No big deal there.

As for Fett, he is a supporting character. Hard to believe he will get an entire film for himself unless they radically expand the parameters of what he can do. I actually do want to see a young Solo film, despite the protestations of many on these boards.

Disney and Lucas Film confirmed that EP VII-IX will be new stories with new characters.

They already confirmed that EU characters will not be in movies. EU is now Legends. It is dead for new cannon. Face it.

    8. Greg K, maybe you are right, BUT... I think Solo comes first. Lawrence Kasdan is rumored to be writing the FETT spinoff. But Gary Whitta is writing the first spinoff, directed by Gareth Edwards. So, hence, Solo first, Fett second, and then hopefully RED 5, setting up the eventual post ROTJ sequel with Lily Collins as Leia... I hope.

  37. there are lots of EU Star Wars books and lots of stories and characters. I know It's not canon but i think some stories and characters from new trilogy or rebels will introduce similar situations and then they will be canon: mara jade, solo kids... and so on. I think it's not a big problem. Enjoy all stories they will bring to us...

    1. Exactly. It's too easy to write off the EU as dead and buried when there's plenty to draw on even if it's just the names or archetypes of the EU. Maybe some plot lines.

If the EU were all bad, George Lucas would not have commissioned all those creative talents to create it in the first place. Time will tell which of us is right.

I am not even an EU guy, but I can support taking anything good and discarding anything lame. Shakespeare took from many sources the average person never heard of and adapted those stories into his famous plays.

Whether or not you love or hate Mara Jade or Yuuzhan Vong, someone here digs some off-shoot story of Star Wars or What if? moment. 38. LOL. Alot of deleted posts. Must have been chaotic here. I don't care if they use characters from the EU, i just hope the script is good and connects with the audience and doesn't make us sleep at times. Good lightsaber battles. Good space battles. And yes, good story.

  39. Daisy's tweet means nothing in regards to her character. She is just pointing out that IMDB isn't an official source. And while I absolutely believe that she is Han and Leia's daughter, I seriously doubt they would want to confuse people by calling her Jaina.

  42. I think if Mara Jade is in rebels, then she will be in EV11, but only as Luke's wife and mother of his child/ren. A minor role and definitely not a spin-off film.
Young Han, Boba Fett, Asjajj Ventress or someone similar to her if she doesn't become canon, and one other, a new character, probably a female.
And I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a R2D2 and C-3PO movie as well.

  43. First of all: We're all Star Wars fans here. If we weren't, we wouldn't be here. Secondly, The EU has mixed reviews on all levels. Some of it is just plain merchandising. Some of it is true fans trying to tell a good story. This game happens to have Mara Jade in it. Whether she is amazing or annoying, that's your opinion. Honestly, I think we are reading into a game a little too much. Disney wants money, so they let a few popular EU characters get a couple of mini starship action figures or something. I'm not sure that should cause mass hysteria. Always proceed with caution when dealing with Disney toys.
