UPDATE! Electronic Arts Gets an Exclusive Deal for Future Star Wars Games!

Great news for all Star Wars fans and gamers:

"Today it was announced that Lucasfilm Ltd. and Disney Interactive are entering into a multi-year, multi-title exclusive licensing agreement with Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) for the creation of new high quality Star Wars games spanning multiple genres for console, PC, mobile, and tablets...

Industry leaders and creators of best-in-class blockbuster games, the development and publishing teams at EA will collaborate with the creative teams at Lucasfilm to provide audiences with all-new gaming experiences set in the ever-expanding Star Wars galaxy. As part of the agreement, EA studio teams DICE (Battlefield series) and Visceral (Dead Space series) will join BioWare (Mass Effect series, Star Wars: The Old Republic) in the development of new Star Wars games.

"Our number one objective was to find a developer who could consistently deliver our fans great Star Wars games for years to come," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "When we looked at the talent of the teams that EA was committing to our games and the quality of their vision for Star Wars, the choice was clear."

While EA studios will develop for the core Star Wars gaming audience, Disney Interactive will focus on delivering new Star Wars games for casual audiences on mobile, social, tablet, and online gaming platforms.

"This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come," said John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive. "Collaborating with one of the world's premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to fans around the world."

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe," said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. "Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

In a blog post on EA's official site, Gibeau confirmed that the new projects will be powered by "the Frostbite 3 development engine – guaranteeing incredible graphic fidelity, environments and characters.

More information, including titles in development, will be announced in the coming months.

UPDATE!

During a call reporting earnings for the 2013 fiscal year, EA executive chairman Larry Probst said none of the publisher’s Star Wars games are planned for EA’s 2014 fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.
So we could expect the first EA Star Wars game to hit the market as early as a few months before the Episode 7 premiere in summer 2015.

  4. I think EA will do a brilliant job with Star Wars. They currently have the best war games on the market like Battlefield 3. Just imagine what they can do with the star wars games! I'm not saying that previous star wars games were bad by any means, but just imagine what EA can truly do to it!!! However, i would like to see some of that classic star wars game features in the new ones, I don't just want star wars to turn itself into Battlefield 3 and 4.

So how about we sit back and see what they come up with?

  5. If by brilliant job you mean another mass, linear moneymaker with amazing graphic than yep, I agree.

EA games are like pizza. They look nice, taste good and usually they are too expensive. But no mather what it's still damn, boring pizza. Even if you'll add broccoli instead of mushrooms it's still fucking pizza...
Don't get me wrong. I like pizza.
EA and Disney will turn Star Wars into brand to make money only. Fans can go fuck themselves. At least Lucas pretended he care.
And I swear if miley cyrus will take part in any SW movies I will organize a protest.

    I hope I'm wrong.

  6. well, Bioware is known for having created some really amazing games (like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars KotOR, Mass Effect), so I'm quite optimistic...
I just hope EA will not screw it up too much

  7. Seriously, you people think that EA will deliver a good Star Wars game? This is the worst news I can think of, ***k!

Electronic Arts has destroyed everything they've touched. IPs are just resources for them to mine until they're empty. Look at what they've done to Bioware, turning them into another company who's forced to turn out cash grab sequels like Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2. Battlefield 3? Dumbed it down to appeal to wider audience so EA can try to get a slice of that "sweet" COD market. When was the last time any of you heard of a good Command and Conquer game?

But don't listen to what I say, I'm sure the next game they make will be a home run. If not then the one after that will be, and it not that the, the one after that one. Oh, that wasn't good? Don't worry, the next, next, next, next game after that will be good. Just keep buying their "products", it's your money after all but don't claim you were fooled if your purchase didn't live up to expectations; EA has a well deserved reputation.
