UPDATE! Ben Kingsley Had Read for a Role in Episode 7? J.J. Abrams Talks Star Wars and Disney's Approach to the New Movies.

Yesterday Saoirse Ronan said something very interesting when asked if she has been auditioned for the new Star Wars movies. She simply said "everyone has read for Star Wars". Looking back at all the casting rumors from the last few months we can conclude that she was not joking. The latest rumored actor who has read for a role in Episode 7 is Sir Ben Kingsley. Also hit the jump to find out what J.J. Abrams said about Disney and their approach to the new Star Wars movies...

From furiousfanboys:
It’s just a rumor right now, and they are seeing a huge number of actors for various roles as casting is well underway. However, Kingsley would fit with the earlier casting call where they were looking for an older actor around his 70s for a role. Casting him in the movie could be seen as similar to having Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars…

Few months ago Kingsley was asked about his thoughts on Star Wars. See his brief comment in the video below:

UPDATE!

Ben Kingsley was quick to debunk those rumors. Here's what he said:
"Oh, what a shame that I wasn't awake during the audition. It's passed me by entirely...I have no recollection of it whatsoever! I do apologise to the producers and director, but I'm afraid that I have no recall of this."

J.J. Abrams recently appeared on The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS and talked about  what makes him say yes to so many projects and how Star Wars won’t be ‘Disneyfied‘ at all.

On how he was convinced about doing Star Wars:

With Star Wars, it was something that I loved so much when I was a little kid. I went into a meeting knowing I was going to say no, but talking to Kathy Kennedy [the producer], the idea of it was so surreal to be involved with that world. I ran downstairs to Katie, my wife, after the meeting was over and said ‘I know I was just going to say no, but that was a really compelling meeting.’ And Katie was like ‘Oh God.’

On jumping ships and playing in the Star Wars sandbox now:

That’s crazy. I would say this: as someone who has become a late in life Trekkie, I really think there’s room for both these things. It’s funny because Star Trek in some ways informs Star Wars. We did Star Trek…my love of Star Wars, the energy of it and sort of the comedy and rhythm of it I think effected Star Trek. There such different worlds though. The stories, the characters, the universes. One is sort of our future, much more science based in theory. Star Wars is like a fairy tale that happens to take place in space. They’re very different beasts.
On Disney's approach to the Star Wars movies and the Disneyfication:

The beauty there is Disney doesn’t want that. They are well aware of this (fear of Disneyfication) and they are very careful to make sure that…they are sensitive to that. They don’t want that at all, that’s the last thing they want. But that company, which is Marvel, they have…it’s incredible the scale of that company. They are as aware of that as anyone.

  1. Ben Kingsley is always GREAT. I can see him as either a villain or some old Jedi who had isolated himself, being recruited to come out of hiding to join the fight.

  2. A bit famous for my taste but he's pretty damned talented. Would be intriguing to see what his role would be.

  5. I was shocked with all the violence and gore in Lone Ranger and John Carter. So the word "Disneyfication" means nothing in this day and age.

  6. You know, folks seems to react to Ben Kingsley like he's one of the world's finest actors, but outside of Ghandi, what has he really done that shines?

Iron Man 3, Prince of Persia, and Bloodrayne don't exactly inspire confidence here.

as a possible star in Chrissie's "Chopper".
Or whatever the fuck it was called.
A veritable toúr dé force, it was!

    1. This phrase had much more meaning before when Disney were doing only kids movies and theme parks. It means to tone something down, to alter it and make it simpler so that the general public (mostly kids) will like it more. Disney proved with Marvel and other movies like Tron: Legacy, John Carter and Lone Ranger that they can have a much more serious take on things. So I think Star Wars won't be Disneyficated. Especially with Abram and Kennedy in charge.

  8. i guess all hot and rising stars compete for main female role in star wars.

Following up on the initial report of actress Saoirse Ronan publicly confirming that she took part in a reading for an unspecified Episode VII role, we get an an expanded quote on her participation:

Yeah, I did [audition for Star Wars Episode VII]… I don’t know whether I should have said that now! I mean, everyone did. Everyone has auditioned for it. So many people I know have gone in for the part I’ve gone in for, and guys who’ve gone in for a particular part, so I’d imagine J.J. is probably just scanning the earth to find the people that he needs.

But nobody has a clue what it’s about, and nobody’s read the script. So I’ve gone in and read for it, but I have to say, I think it’s the only time I’ve ever thought, ‘You know what? Even if I don’t get it, I had so much fun auditioning, pretending to take out a lightsaber – out of a bag, kind of inspect it and not know what it is. That was… that was great. A lightsaber! Star Wars!

  9. ben Kingsly would be a great ancient sith Lord over 2000 years old waiting to destroy this so called chosen one.... he thinks its Luke and him and Luke have a final battle at the end of 7..... and of course we find out in part 9 that one of leias children is the chosen one..... after all, Luke didnt kill the darth sidious... it was Vadar..... and the sith king is still out there on the sith planet of Korriban..which we would finally see in part 7...... i think Jj Abrams will do great..... and Disney will hit a slam dunk.... they did good with what they had with tron Legacy.... and all 4 Pirates of the Carribbean movies were all good.... so dont count out Disney.... if this movie is done right ( by star wars fans standards, it could become one of the greatest movies ever...... however, if they mess it up, then star wars fans will never recover..... right now all fans are hanging on barely after the yawining boring parts 1, 2 and 3...... ya, we wanted to see Darth maul fight Darth Vadar for total supreme in the Empire... not see re runs of boring drama romance back and forth with padme and anakin for an entire trilogy.... we got soap operas for that crapola....... JJ Abrams, the furture of Star Wars is in your hands.... you will be remembered for being great, or you will be hunted down by both sith and jedi fans..... we take our hats off to ya JJ Abrams.... this job to direct this part 7 is on thinner ice...... pressure is on...
