Lucasfilm officially revealed the premiere date of the first movie from the new trilogy. Episode 7 will be the first Star Wars movie not to open in May...

From StarWars.com:
With pre-production in full-swing, a confirmed release date of December 18, 2015, has been set for Lucasfilm's highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.
"We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture," said Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.
Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams (Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek) and is being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.
Shooting is scheduled to begin spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios.

I'm really happy with this date. There will be plenty of time to do things right.

Also Disney has just confirmed that Episode 7 will be in 3D.

Now some reactions from the web.

Kudos to BadAssDigest who first reported the December rumor:

  2. Arndt wasn't credited at all in this release. Interesting. Maybe the "rewrites" are more extensive than we thought.

    2. Credits are in the film you will see it. I think these two unknowns are what Abrams & Kasdan want to add plus normal rewrites battle scenes etc.

  3. Not happy with the release date at all. All 6 films have been released between may 16th-25. Having released does not seem like star wars. I have fond memories of waiting in line for hours on warm may evenings for these movies. My son was born on the day ROTS was released. Star wars in December sucks. Just the first of many things to come that stupid a!# Disney will screw up. Off to a bad start

    3. Yeah no offense big time Star Wars fan here... I don't care when the hell it comes out so long as it's a quality movie.

    4. a little over a year ago there was NO HOPE of any more Star Wars movies... be happy we have so much now to look forward to and a 6 month delay is nothing compared to "NEVER"

  5. For final time this time without my dream cast(i am sure cast is already made without these 2 unknown actors) what i want as star wars fan:

Star wars will kill all movies in 2015 and will be highest grossing movie of the year and may be even highest grossing movie of all time. Star Wars won’t be just entertaining like marvels and DC films! Expect a lot of mythology in it with master of mythology and best sci fi creator JJ Abrams(more mythology than in original trilogy) and great new characters with SW original writer like Lawrence Kasdan! This will be best sci fi movie of the decade. I want to see kings of the Sith species & sith kingdom( homeworld- Korriban) will be insane! Star Wars never show us that. If darth vedar is there even for one second will be best news ever. More sith lords like darth vader/darth maul(they are fan favorite of all time)! And female sith lord sound outstanding cool!!! I hope they create one as darth malgus(really like his face costume etc) and may be one new hot sith with mask helm etc. Like raven.I want the humour, great story, the mythology, war, evil and good, and the magic that made up star wars. The war between Sith and Jedi is amazing and what makes Star Wars greatest sci fi franchise of all time.NO politics.

A bearded Hamill, training new jedi & to see Leia as a jedi also.

I want too see an original story, something NEW, not anything from the EU (although i don´t care if the borrow names from it)

Hopefully familiar design from original trilogy on vehicles etc. .. Hopefully forceghosts: Obi Wan, Qui Gon, Anakin & YODA (as a puppet) & as many as possible from the orginal cast, to see what has happened to their lives.

& i want lightsaber duels with some new lightsaber colours and lightsaber models.

& finally i would very much like to see Warwick Davis in many roles & maybe wicket decides to leave endor & travel in space with the crew of millennium falcon? & yes, as much screentime as possible for siths, jedi & new wookie!!!

    1. Yes I said spoiled, re-read your comments. Also please tell me what Disney will screw up since you know ahead of all humanity and time considering they have done everything right so far. You sound like you'd rather them rush production and make a half ass star wars movie.

    2. Spoiled brat fo-sho. But lets be real, I can see Disney throwing in some Jar-Jar flavor to hook the kiddies and sell merch. I'm not saying they will, but I wont be surprised when they do. That being said, retards like this guy give Star Wars fans a bad name. Stop complaining and be excited.

Just joking, it's the exaggerate tension I feel for this beloved franchise that keep increasing, must release it somehow...
3d? Wow, hope they don't mess with the special effects/action scenes and keep it useful and perfect like it was in Avatar (first and only film that I don't regret having seen in 3d)

    3. I would love to see a lightsaber duel in 3-D! Just hope the 3-D works well, sometimes it's just so annoying and I wish I hadn't spent the extra cash :D

  12. Who cares when it's coming out?

Bottom line is we are getting a brand new Star Wars film that is a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi that stars Harrison Ford, Mark HamilL and Carrie Fisher and some of you nerds are bitching because "Star wars is a spring/summer movie series. PERIOD!"....All I can say is GET A LIFE!!!

  25. I'm actually quite happy with how Disney have handled this so far, despite a lot of uneccessary doom and gloom about the whole thing. About 2 years has already being spent on the project, with another 2 years to go. JJ is the current "in-demand" director, Kasdan is a safe pair of hands for all things Star Wars, Kennedy has enormous experience at delivering huge productions. All this points to Ep 7 being a worthy addition to the Saga. Disney is taking its time and building a great team of filmmakers. JJ's praise for Arndt also kind of squashes the rumours that he was sacked.

  26. 1,5 years of post production is a long time, enough to do everything right. Be honest, we don't want them to tweak anything AFTER the release right ;)

  28. YOU HAVE ALL GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
You'd rather rush production just to keep up with tradition? Give them whatever time they need to make these films incredible! If that means a few extra months without new Star Wars, I'm absolutly fine with that. Everyone should just calm their tits and keep the faith. This movie is going to be phenominal!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think I'd rather have them push back to May 2016. It'd give them plenty of time and the fans who really care about keeping it a spring/summer release would be satisfied as well...
