Part of Star Wars: Episode 7 to be Shot in IMAX?

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond was recently addressing investors at a Goldman Sachs conference and made one particularly interesting comment...

Here's a brief quote that was brought to AICN's attention:
"We are talking to J.J. Abrams test now about the next Star Wars being used with partly IMAX cameras."
Abrams is no stranger to the format because he recently shot some scenes with IMAX cameras for his latest movie STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

This won't be the first time that IMAX is used with Star Wars.

If you remember Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones was the first official application to use IMAX DMR process. This process allows conventional films to be upconverted into IMAX format. This technology allows films shot on 35mm for conventional theatres to be shown in IMAX venues.

Also the opening scene to Star Wars: New Hope was re-shot in IMAX in 1996. They were using a meter long Star Destroyer. The original model from 1977 was just one foot long. The new effects were recreated by Dennis Muren and shot in the IMAX format 70mm film.

The huge scope of space is definitely best seen in IMAX.

  1. The huge scope of space is definitely best seen in IMAX.

I agree. I will add batle scenes too. I love IMAX.

  2. As Christopher Nolan showed with The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises practical effects and even just establishing locations can look fantastic on a massive IMAX screen, and the possibilities for what that could mean for Star Wars are intriguing.

  3. Am I the only one who couldn't give a tiny toss about visuals and clarity and 3d etc etc. All this stuff just feels like a gimmick. The more simple the better for me. I love that opening shot of the first star wars/new hope. So symbolic and everytime I watch it it STILL makes an impact. It's unforgettable. No fancy cameras and 3d is needed. Just the use of the right tone. If you want to enhance it with stuff or whatever, fine, but don't use it as an excuse to just cram action on the screen that the audience is expected to care about just because of the nice visuals, when in actual fact I will have forgotten about it after 10 minutes ha

    1. "Couldn't give a tiny toss ...."
I just fuckin' LOVE the way you Brits talk! lol

    2. Well thank you I presume aha. "just fuckin' LOVE". I find your vocabulary equally interesting aha :)

  4. I'm all for it! IMAX, 3D, Holographic- if I can't hope for sex, at least let me have mind-blowingly vivid fantasy movies! I believe these technologies are in the spirit of being swept away by this kind of movie.

  5. This is good news. Everything looks better when shot in IMAX.

I do hope however, that they shoot the entire thing in IMAX and not just a few scenes.

Don't really care about 3D. It was a fun gimmick for Beowolf and a few other movies, but honestly it just doesn't look that great anyway.

  6. I hope it's the same 3D cameras as used with James camerons avatar.

  7. Lots of spoken languages, which include Spanish, France, and The
german language, offer an alphabet. on your hard disk or ipod
mp3 player. Nevertheless, you can find a great remedy to the present trouble.

Smooth could be the Primary Reason!... Melendez
